Solasta: Crown of the Magister Early Access Preview - Gamebanshee
The early access build of Solasta: Crown of the Magister is but a taste of what's to come. But with its fateful adaptation of the ruleset and an extremely satisfying combat engine, it's already starting to look like a CRPG no self-respecting enthusiast would want to miss.

However, in order for Solasta to truly shine, the Tactical Adventures team still needs to polish some rough edges and take a good long look at the game's narrative side. And if they manage that, they'll have something spectacular on their hands.

So, what do you think? Let us know below.

Urban Strife - November 2020 Dev Update
Urban Strife is about combat and survival so all things considered, we decided to turn health into a system, instead of a character stat. LIFE, or overall health, has a very special meter. Life meter is, of course, critical because once it reaches zero, you are dead. This being said, body parts have their own internal HP too and damage received by them is weighted differently when applied to a NPC's life. For example, a head shot will do about 3x damage to global health, but a wounded hand will have a much smaller effect. This makes body armor (that protects the head and the torso) way more important and leaving the limbs exposed avoids the Juggernaut effect (which is not desirable in a survival, low-tech game). Killing an armored enemy simply by attacking the limbs is a difficult feat, but bleeding and crippling will severely impact his/her combat ability so at least you have a fighting chance.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker - A Retrospective Look at Character Sheet Design
The primary data input was the original character sheet, documentation from the game designers, the Core Rulebook of the tabletop system, and part of a layout that had already been designed for the inventory interface.

Obviously, it was impossible to simply recreate the paper version of the character sheet on screen. The computer version of the game featured a smaller list of skills, but also increased the number of conditions and effects that would need to be displayed. There were also some other characteristics included that were not normally displayed on the paper version of the sheet.

Alaloth - Champions of The Four Kingdoms -The Known World & The Outer World
Using archeology and magic, the mortal races were able to discover much about the ancient roots of their world, from its inception to its current state. Some parts of history have been lost along the way or are kept guarded as secrets among the eternal races, but the main series of events are well-recorded and known.

The tale of the kingdoms begins with the First Era, an Era of blood and birth, a time when life was created and gods were born. It was during this time that the All-Father's blood dripped onto the world, creating man, elf, dwarf, orc, and beast, as well as the First Pantheon of the Gods.

The Second Era is the time of legends, when great heroes from all the mortal kingdoms fought and vanquished any terror that dared to beset the land. Much of this history has been recorded in dusty tomes by the humans, while the elves choose to simply remember the tale instead of putting it down in writing.

The current Era is the Third, the Era of The Fifth Kingdom. With the creation of the Fifth Kingdom, and the loss of the world's light, Vaizmil, the world fell into chaos. With the gods weakened, Alaloth descended on the land from the realms of the gods. Although the joint effort of the races managed to confine him in The Fifth Kingdom, he still seeds his corruption deep into the ground. No one knows how this Era will end. Will hope return to our world once more or will we plunge into eternal darkness?
Alaloth - Champions of The Four Kingdoms - The Religion & Deities of Plamen
At the dawn of time, as the All-Father's blood spilled onto the chaotic world of Plamen, the Gods, elements, creatures, and mortals were created. With powerful beings vying for control, the All-Father decided to gather them up into one institution under his control and thus, The First Pantheon was created.

For much of the history known to the mortal realm, the Pantheon was a peaceful and isolationist gathering of the Gods. There they would argue, fight, drink, and chant together, with no real plan of molding the world below them.

Only a few took interest in the lives of mortals, while some sought solace in the lives of natural creatures. Bit by bit they helped the mortals by rewarding those they found deserving, but due to the rules imposed by the All-Father, they were forbidden from walking the earth and intervening in conflicts between the kingdoms in any way.

They continued like this for many centuries, until hubris took over and the All-Father broke his own rule, plunging the Pantheon into war against his own daughter, the Mother of Betrayers, and her son, Alaloth.
Alaloth - Champions of The Four Kingdoms -The Fifth Kingdom & Those That Covet it
At the dawning hours of the Second Era, the Goddess of Light, Vaizmil, looked upon the world and saw only conflict and war. She saw friend turned against friend, and disloyalty and pain. She saw a realm disjointed by falsehoods when it could have been one prosperous kingdom. Thus, she came up with a plan.

The Fifth Kingdom, a kingdom that was to be in the center of The Four Kingdoms, was at that time a vacant land with a mighty abandoned city, ripe for the taking if one was brave enough. Vaizmil convinced the All-Father to enact her dream through trickery, telling him that only the strongest realm would be able to claim the Fifth Kingdom and rule over all others. But the reality was that she had no intention of leaving The Fifth Kingdom to competition. Her purpose was unification, as only with the united force of The Four Kingdoms would the land truly know peace.

RPGs That Feel Like BioWare Games - PC Gamer
We all miss Old BioWare, and now that we've seen several seconds of exciting cinematics advertising BioWare's next entries in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, we're cautiously wondering whether to engage the optimism engines and power the hope turbines up to speed.

In the meantime, have you found any other games that have filled the gap in your life for dialogue-heavy party-based RPGs that probably have moral choices and the option to befriend and/or bang your companions? What RPG that isn't by BioWare feels the most like a BioWare RPG?

Here are our answers, plus a few from our forum.

The Elder Scrolls Online 2020 Retrospective - Official Site
Greetings ESO Community! Well, we've done it—we’ve made it (almost, as I type this; don't want to jinx it) to the end of 2020. All of us at ZeniMax Online Studios have been working from home since March—a huge change for us. We've managed to ride out the year (mostly) safely and have overcome the difficulties posed by the entire team working remotely. We are very fortunate—and thankful—to have been able to make the transition to working from home and emerged at the end of 2020 with our jobs and health intact.

Good day Ellarians! As you may remember, the beta version of the first chapter of the single-player campaign of Legends of Ellaria has been available for a few days now. Your horse is equipped with a special backpack with which you can carry more staff to trade and sell. But do not forget about your horse’s needs. Fallout: The Frontier - Release Date Explanation Dev Log

Just a short dev log explaining the reasonings behind the delay and the plan going forward.
Arkane Studios Retrospective - PC Gamer
There are some creative people born out of place and out of time. In 1993, Raphael Colantonio should have been one of the MIT graduates and musicians working on the Ultima Underworld games at Looking Glass Studios, infusing early 3D gaming with rudimentary physics and atmospheric sound design. Instead, through some cosmic oversight, he was a teenager in France, bored and playing in a band.
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remains one of the all-time greats - Gamesradar
Geralt of Rivia, the White Wolf and Butcher Of Blaviken, comes with a long history. At the outset of The Witcher 3, he's somewhere around 100 years old, his life extended by the physical mutations that marked his becoming a witcher, member of an elite cadre of monster hunters. Also behind him are the thousands of words written by his creator, author Andrzej Sapkowski, as well as the hundreds of hours of play in the two games that came before.
Techland promises fresh updates about Dying Light 2 in 2021 - DSOGaming
Back in May 2020, Dying Light 2's lead game designer, Tymon Smektala, claimed that the game is in its final stretch of development. However, and since then, we haven't heard anything about this title. Nevertheless, Techland has issued an update, claiming that it will share more details about Dying Light 2 in 2021.

Most Exciting Upcoming RPG Made by 2 People.. Bleak Faith: Forsaken

Deus Ex It's a Good Time for a Comeback - PC Gamer
Cyberpunk 2077's launch has made the release of Daikatana look like a smooth operation, with issues that range from failing to alert players about potential epilepsy triggers, quickly rectified thankfully, a to a PS4 version so fundamentally broken that Sony decided to remove it from sale. There's no question that a lot of people are unhappy with Cyberpunk, but where there's dissatisfaction, there's also opportunity.

Back in 2013, EA launched its reboot of SimCity, which had several amazing ideas scuppered by a handful of terrible design decisions. Two years later, Colossal Order released Cities: Skylines. By taking SimCity's template, avoiding the pitfalls of its predecessor and fixing the problems, the result was arguably the best city-builder ever made.

I think there's a similar opportunity for a canny designer to do the same with Cyberpunk, and this time there's already a perfect series waiting in the wings: Deus Ex. Currently published by Square Enix, the Deus Ex series has been on hiatus since 2016, after the (mostly good) Mankind Divided failed to match sales expectations. But the huge attention and commercial success Cyberpunk has garnered, combined with its equally significant problems, has opened up a window for the series to return.

This looks interesting, like something I might perhaps buy. Reminds me of the Drakensang srtting, which also was kind of medieval.

Archmage Rises Update #128: 2020 Wrap Up

On Aug 29 2020 we shared the news we are taking a short contract to build a mobile game for another studio that needed some help. The project started Sept 1 and went until Dec 15. This update has three parts:

  1. What resulted from taking on this project
  2. Walkthrough of the game we made: Lost Legends of Redwall: Feast & Friends
  3. What it means for Archmage Rises in 2021
Despite the COVID challenges of 2020, this was a good year for us. Hope it was for you too. Have a happy new year and looking forward to returning to Archmage Rises development in the new year!
VentureBeat's Favorite RPGs of 2020 - VentureBeat
When I think of the RPGs of 2020, I think about the past and the future. How games like Demon's Souls, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Baldur’s Gate III tap into our nostalgia for these beloved superstars while also putting them into new packages. I think of how roguelike and deck-building elements continue to filter through so many indies, like Solasta: Crown of the Magister and Gordian Quest. And how I discovered a series that's risen from niche status to Western acclaim.

Let's look at my favorite RPGs of 2020. I hope you enjoy these games and more , as much as I do, and I wish you well as we look to a world that could start healing from the pain of 2020.

Those guys working at Fromsoftware marketing department have the easiest job ever. It's probably all done on purpose.

30 years after its release, I still can't get enough of HeroQuest - PCGamer
I don't feel nostalgia for many things, but when I fire up HeroQuest and the music suddenly flips into Golden Brown (imagine being a composer, told you only have 30 kilobytes for your entire musical score and thinking, Cool, that means I can fit this harpsichord solo by The Stranglers in), I feel a full-blown Proustian rush.
Star Renegades 'The Imperium Strikes Back' Update - RPGSite
Publisher Raw Fury and developer Massive Damage have released a new free update to pixel-art roguelike RPG Star Renegades on PC, dubbed the 'The Imperium Strikes Back'. The update adds a new planet with new enemies and bosses, alongside fixes for a few outstanding bugs and support for Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese languages. The update will launch for console versions in 2021.
Diablo Immortal: Why Fans Should Give It A Chance - GameInformer
This is about Diablo Immortal, the upcoming mobile Diablo title that's been excoriated and eviscerated since its calamitous reveal. Having had a chance to play a ton of it now in its Technical Alpha period featuring a deluge of early and mid-game offerings, I'm happy to report that it's a real deal Diablo game, and even features some aspects that could move the franchise and the genre forward in interesting ways. Do I wish there was a PC version? Yes, absolutely. Are we still getting Diablo IV? You bet. For now, it's a good time to plunk away on your phone if you want a new demon-slaying snack.
Elden Ring Boss Artwork and Details Reportedly Leaked - TwistedVoxel
Elden Ring fans have been waiting for an update on the game for a long time now. Recently, some artwork showing the bosses has leaked online. Elden Ring was first showcased during the E3 2019 press conference by Microsoft.
Party-based RPG Arcante Review -RPGamer
Developed by Luca Favano, Arcante harkens back to the older computer RPGs such as the Might and Magic and Wizardry series. It even advertises itself as an …old-school, first-person, party-based RPG, retaining some old-school mechanics such as discovery through trial-and-error or having complete freedom to go wherever from the start of the journey. Arcante brings back the nostalgic exploration of its influences, yet it carries some of the bad traits of inconvenience whilst failing to incorporate the quality-of-life mechanics of the modern era.
The Unexpected Zen of Dishonored - Escapist Magazine
We all need to escape every now and again. If the raging dumpster fire of 2020 showed us anything, it's that a sense of calm is in short supply, and like many, I turned to games for that fix. With a crumbling world and months on end stuck inside, games have a special way of allowing us to let go of the troubles of the real world and exist in the fantastical.

For some time, I have been searching for my perfect Zen game. First to mind might be moody platformers like Ori and the Blind Forest or Braid, atmospheric experiences like Dear Esther or Journey, or rhythm games like Thumper and Guitar Hero. All of those games have a special place in my heart, but at this strange time, they no longer calm me.

It'odd, then, that my Zen fix for 2020 involves sitting atop a crumbling Victorian mansion, deciding to immolate a guard with a flaming crossbow bolt, get him devoured by flies, or just choke him out. In other words, I've been revisiting Dishonored.

GB Feature: Hades Review - Gamebanshee
If we consider Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre as the video game equivalent of Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy, where three decidedly standalone projects by the same creators can be seen as sharing certain stylistic and thematic elements, then Hades would be the end goal of such a long-term endeavor that refines various elements of its predecessors before combining them into one ultimate package.

You take Bastion's fast-paced combat, Transistor's modular character-building system, Pyre's incremental storytelling, and add a coating of Greek mythology on top of it all, and you end up with Hades - an action-RPG you'll have to try very hard not to enjoy.
Within the Cosmos - January 2021: Development Update
Happy New Years everyone! It has been just about half a year since I last posted an update on Steam. I've been made aware of the fact that many people here believe the game has been abandoned. I must apologize for giving you that impression. Within the Cosmos has been in active development throughout the year, and I remain completely committed to finishing this dream of mine.
