'Tormentor' - A game about torturing people.

No, I'm not. Which is why I posed the question. I was curious what others thought about it.

So you're saying the game is about consensual torture? I must have missed that.

So you haven't researched this before advertising it and starting a controversy frenzy. Good to know.

I have no idea what the game is about, I was assuming you were the expert, what with you starting a thread about it.

I made a distinction about different types of torture because you are using the word torture as if its automatically a bad thing regardless of context. Your implication was clearly that someone 'enjoying' a game about torture is beyond your understanding:

It's a game where you torture people, and… apparently not much else.

I enjoy a lot of games with dark content, but this seems absurd.

It's not something I'd take interest in either, but then I don't take interest in a lot of weird sub-genres, like First Person Murder games, for example.

I haven't even looked at the link, I'm not sure I want my advertising algorithm clogged up with it, but aren't games like Dungeon Keeper along similar lines? In that you set traps and imprison heroes? Don't you also torture people in that awful Inquisition RPG? As in, I think you need to say what, exactly, is your phobia here, or what specific lines you think are crossed so that the issue can be a bit more nuanced than simply repeating the word torture with an assumption that that's all you need to do?

I think JDR raised a fair an important question (for which I have no answer), which to me is evident from most of the replies. Nothing suspicious about it.

I don't understand why you've used this phrase, where does suspicion fit into the enfolding narrative?

I ask because this implies you're reading something that hasn't been written?

Seemed to me that you, in your first post, was questioning his motives ("doing more to advertise the game","creating a controversy-frenzy") . Maybe you weren''t, but that's how it appeared to me.

It's pretty sick.

It's not always easy to know where to draw the line, but there are obvious cases, and this is one of them. Making such games (or movies, or whatever) is just exploiting the excitement for fearsome or disturbing situations, which in itself isn't too bad. After all, it's how many of them do.

When someone goes to the extreme and keeps pretending it's OK to make it commonplace, however, that's just too much off. It's way past the elasticity point and accepting that as if it were normal can only shift the balance. I can't see anything good coming from that kind of experience.

I think you need to calm down, stop being provocative to everyone you can, and move on. JDR was asking a simple question and we were discussing it between adults. There is no frenzy and it's really not necessary to ponder on the fine details of this "style", the subject is obvious enough.

No, if I was questioning his motives I'd have questioned his motives.

It's a commonly known paradox that complaining about the content of something usually does more to promote that something, and the more of a controversy it becomes the more people consume it.

You know, like those religious people who got offended by Life of Brian, ironically making the film even more popular. Or like that nonsense over that recent Netflix film called Cuties, a film almost literally no-one would have watched but for the outrage-fest.

Hence why I asked if there was anything in the game that is specifically offensive to JDR13 before he does what common-sense tells us what happens.

I asked for 'clarification'.

clarification
[ˌklarɪfɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n]
NOUN
the action of making a statement or situation less confused and more comprehensible.

Just like you and me are now asking clarification from each other and we are both explaining ourselves to help each other understand where we are both coming from.

I don't know if you've noticed, but JDR13 really hates clarifying his points, and views requests for clarification as 'attacks'. As in "how dare you question what I wrote" as oppose to "Oh right, you didn't understand, I'll try to explain in more detail".

How it went:

"Drama Alert! Torture!"

------"What kind of torture are you objecting to?"

"I don't know, you tell me"

------"What?"

"Fuck off you drama-hungry twat"

------"Erm..."

Right… I really don't think you're fooling anyone here with that bunk. You've pulled this enough times by now that people can smell your bullshit quickly enough.

I want to keep myself out of this argument but just can't help making a bit of fun of language. This is not meant as a personal attack towards @pibbur.

Especially østlendinger (a group of people in Norway coming from Østlandet) tend to say "tvilsomt" about pretty much anything. It doesn't translate very well to other languages, though. If it is as I suspect, he meant that JDR's initial post was valid in his opinion. Now, I gathered that pibbur was from Bergen, not from Østlandet?

Another very confusing term used by østlendiger is "ass". It does not mean the English ass but "also"

See what you have done lackblogger. You terrorized this conversation to the point where we start making jokes about the language used within a country…

largh trying to act as a translator between østlendisk and English. We all know that it's not only, only.

Yes indeed, who'd'a thought that asking: what kind of fictionalised torture is particularly and specifically more offensive than another? to be such a tortuous question to answer!

Just for info:

I don't post newsbits for this game
I don't put it in our RPG database

@Corwin; I suggest to move this thread to Politics, Religion & other Controversies

Hmm, there was another game long ago, where you were the Executioner.
That game was quite interesting, as it was more of a political simulator than a juvenile angst-game: how to torture enemies of the state for intel, execute them or not, etc, etc.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/739130/The_Executioner/

As for this Tormentor:
Yup, I think every boy had a moment in his oh so young period of life, when he realized that the world is cruel, the people are ignorant, and generally speaking: Santa does not exist.

Psychologically, this is the perfect moment for teenage rage: form a punk band, be a shock activist, listen to doom metal, be a fistfight regular, experiment with marijuana, drink booze by gallons, smoke Gitanes/Lucky Strike 2 packs a day, pull girl's hair for the heck of it, etc, etc, etc.

It does not matter. Eventually the little cub will collect a few scars, grow up and move on.
Problem is, today's youngsters won't grow up and continue suit as adults: no scars and Santa is alive and well.

This does look pretty awful. That said, I remember a game called "Hatred" that basically seemed to be made the same way, just for the sake of shock and controversy, and it was about being a mass shooter and killing as many people as possible, including men, women, and even children, in public places. So stuff like this is nothing new. Games which seem to be made for purely shock value, or since I can be conspiratorial minded at times, maybe even made on purpose to give ammunition to politicians and certain political factions that want to censor everything these days. -- "See, look how evil/awful/reprehensible this video game is, they are all like that, and should be banned!" type of deal.

And yep, just checked, its still available to be bought on steam. So my opinion is best to ignore games like this, just like we know there are dark people in real life who probably do get off on this type of thing. Best case scenario, maybe it will prevent them from actually doing it for real by allowing them to live out their sick fantasies, in a way.

I wonder why games describing the act of reproduction are banned on Steam but then a game about mass murder is just fine. Tells something about the double standards a certain country is imposing on us. If it were the Germans or French who set the rules in the video game industry, porn games would be called "love games" and found from the Top Seller list on Steam all the time
