A Conversation with Warren Spector & Andrew Augustin

loading…
This talk was for Play NYC 2020. Andrew Augustin sits down with industry veteran Warren Spector to discuss his career and expertise in creating immersive sim games and using choice & consequence philosophy in game design. Augustin was once part of Spector's Denius-Sams Gaming Academy before going on to create his own indie studio, Notion Games.
Gamedec Demo - Interrogating Timmy The Tiny Perv

We played the demo for cyberpunk, text-heavy RPG detect-'em-up Gamedec a couple of times. Here's an example of playing out an interrogation with Timmy, a very silly young man who went into a very rude game world and got into trouble. In this interview, we're playing good cop and getting Timmy on our side.

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark - Early Access Anniversary Celebrations
It's been 2 years now since we launched the Early Access for Fell Seal.
Once again, we want to thank everyone for the incredible support and engagement we've received!

You guys have been truly awesome and we're very grateful!

To celebrate, we're releasing a little pack of goodies that will be placed in a "Goodies" folder under the game's files. It contains some character art, portraits and other fun knick-knacks. Give it a look!
Tainted Grail - Guardian Change Update
Today we have yet another update. While a bit short, we could not be more excited about what’s coming with Patch 0.95! Everything is slowly coming together – gameplay, visuals, and story implementations… and boy, oh boy… we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved in these three months since our release in Early Access!

We hope we will bring you a lot of fun – polished, this time!
Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game - The Stealth System
Role-playing means different things to different people. To us, it means handling quests and obstacles in a manner fitting your character. You can solve all your problems with violence, you can talk your way through the game, 'making friends and influencing people', or you can rely on stealth (and science) and have a lot of fun in the process.

One of the early quests tasks you with recruiting Lord's Mercy and her gang for Braxton (more on the conflict here link, written by Primordia's Mark Yohalem himself).

The (relatively) easy way is to convince Mercy to switch sides, but it requires skills like Persuasion and Streetwise. If you fail, you'd have to kill her to weaken Jonas, which will be a very hard fight as you'd have to fight the entire gang in their 'fort', where the negotiations take place. Obviously, if Mercy and her gang are a valuable ally in the upcoming fight for the control of the Pit, they need to be appropriately tough.

Alternatively, you can sneak inside, assassinate Mercy and leave before anyone realizes what happened.

Silverfall: Complete Released on GOG - 70% Off
Silverfall, a once glorious city, lies in the fantastical Kingdom of Nelwë, where the forces of Technology and Nature are strongly opposed. Symptoms of this terrible conflict have begun to manifest physically as melded cyberbiologic organics and living steam-driven automatons.

Drag your hero from the pits of this world and craft him into a mighty champion that can oppose the planet-choking Order of Nothingness. Freedom to evolve in either the technological or spiritual paths is in your hands and you must choose your comrades wisely to provide a balance and benefit to your efforts - but be cautious, any bias in your choices will either corrupt or upgrade the growing world around you.

Call of Saregnar Demo Krondor Spiritual Successor

loading…
This is a quick peek at the Call of Saregnar demo. This is a story-driven first person perspective RPG, characterized by low-poly 3D graphics and owing a lot of inspiration to a much older era of computer role playing games. It is very much a spiritual successor to the Krondor series of games with some Daggerfall and Might and Magic sprinkled here and there. I feel that I should also mention from the get go that this has been mainly developed by just one person who got some help for the music and sound effects.

Directing The Outer Worlds narrative expansion The Peril on Gorgon - Gamasutra
While Obsidian gears up on new games like Grounded and Avowed, it hasn't turned away from last year's standout hit The Outer Worlds. This month saw the release of Peril on Gorgon, a new DLC adventure for the developer's capitalistic dystopian RPG.

To lead up this DLC, Obsidian tapped lead narrative designer Carrie Patel, who took over game directing duties from Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain. It's a huge task for any game developer to take the role, since it often involves a move into leadership over departments they weren't previously involved in.

The Digital Antiquarian Blog - X-Com: UFO Defense
In the early days of game development, there existed little to no separation between the roles of game programmer and game designer. Those stalwart pioneers who programmed the games they themselves designed could be grouped into two broad categories, depending on the side from which they entered the field. There were the technologists, who were fascinated first and foremost with the inner workings of computers, and chose games as the most challenging, creatively satisfying type of software to which they could apply their talents. And then there were those who loved games themselves above all else, and learned to program computers strictly in order to make better, more exciting ones than could be implemented using only paper, cardboard, and the players’ imaginations. Julian Gollop, the mastermind behind the legendary original X-COM, fell most definitely into this latter category. He turned to the computer only when the games he wanted to make left him no other choice.

Path of Exile: Heist Week One Overview - Games Website
This weekend we launched Path of Exile: Heist! The launch day went quite well with just a few small hotfixes to address minor problems, you can view their patch notes here. Later today, we're planning to deploy a restart patch that includes various other fixes from the weekend. Today's news also outlines a few other details about the weekend and what to expect this week.

Later this week, on September 23 (PDT), we'll be launching Heist on our console platforms. We also hope to formally release our experimental macOS version within the next week as well. Thanks to everyone who has been testing it so far and giving us feedback.
Geneforge 1 Mutagen September Update - Kickstarter
Geneforge 1 - Mutagen work continues. The world is now well over half done, which means it is entirely due for beta testing. Our crew of skilled, awesome, volunteer testers is all set up, and we’re only waiting to resolve some in-house technical difficulties before the game is in their hands. Then they can totally break it.

We’ve played it a lot in-house already, and it is still feeling quite fun. We did have to make a bunch of big balance changes (wizards were as sturdy as armored fighters, everyone was dying too quickly), but that is to be expected in what is basically a new game engine. Now our baby game is ready to go into beta testing to be really torn apart.

Another milestone: We have our first official screenshots! The Steam page and our web pages for Geneforge 1 - Mutagen are being set up, which meant making a trailer and gathering all sorts of marketing materials. This is mostly done, and Geneforge should be announced to the world before our next update.

Vampires, Wraith, & Werewolves - the next generation of World of Darkness games

Scarlet Republics - Gameplay Commentary by Kristian and Gustav

loading…
The biggest question we've received on Scarlet Republics throughout the campaign so far has been: "So, how does it play?" And while we've tried our best to describe that in-depth on the campaign page, we thought we'd give you something greater. For the last week or so, the engine room at the Audacity Interactive HQ has been brimming with energy, with all the cogs and wheels working in unison, to create a small scenario for you. So today we'll treat you to a video playthrough of the (very) pre-alpha game.

We'll take you through one of the early encounters of the game, as the Blackwings have been contracted by Rovale to put down a cityless rebellion. The siblings are leading the charge against a rebel outpost and have marshaled the company to bring their enemies to heel.

Bear in mind that we feature many assets, animations, VFX, and mechanics that are still placeholders, and not as developed as the shiny stuff we showed off in the campaign. Nonetheless, we thought you'd forgive us for that if you got to see the gameplay. So please enjoy.

Bethesda founder discusses sale to Microsoft - Inverse
The surprising news that Microsoft will acquire Bethesda parent company Zenimax for $7.5 billion raises a whole slew of questions. Will franchises like Doom, Fallout, and Skyrim become Xbox exclusives? What does this mean for upcoming games like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI? And what does Zenimax even gain from moving under the Microsoft umbrella?

Microsoft and Zenimax executives are saying silent for the most part on what this deal means for Bethesda, but the company's founder Christopher Weaver (who left in 2002) is free to speak on the subject. In 2007, Weaver was Zenimax's largest shareholder with a 33 percent stake in the company. Today, he says he holds "a pittance of the stock." Nevertheless, he remains an interested party, to say the least.
The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos Review - Gamebanshee
In the end, while the game is definitely playable right now, it really needs at least a few more months in the oven. Then, even though the developers don’t seem to know how to get out of their own way and separate their bad ideas from the good, the combination of those good ideas will surely make The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos worthy of a playthrough or two. Especially if you're someone who enjoys zany humor, challenging tactical combat, or some combination of both.
Rumor: Starfield Images May have Leaked - PC Gamer
Starfield is currently Bethesda's priority ahead of The Elder Scrolls 6, but apart from a teaser shown at E3 in 2018 we haven't seen what their sci-fi RPG will actually look like. Now a trio of images have appeared on image-hosting site Imgur, claiming to be leaked from Starfield. One's an in-game shot of an astronaut who appears to be standing on a space station, another shows a close-up of a UI element from the first screenshot, and the third is a spaceship with some scorch marks and wear and tear.

Matt Chat Bob Alberti on Scepter of Goth and Gopher

loading…
MMO and internet pioneer Bob Alberti is here to talk about some of the first-ever online games, including Scepter of Goth. Before WOW, before EQ, before UO, before British Legends, there was Scepter of Goth. You don't hear enough about this game and it hasn't gotten the attention it deserves for its historical importance. Bob was also a key figure on the Gopher team, which was a critically important step in the development of the internet and a very interesting story.
Grim Dawn Grim Misadventure #173 - Onwards into the Shattering
Hello again with a Grim Misadventure! The latest major content update has arrived 103, and with it new side areas, new monster totems and of course new bosses and loot!

But we can’t just stop there.Onwards to v1.1.9.0!

The unstable nature of the Shattered Realm continues to reveal new portions of the broken reality. Torn apart by the hungering darkness, what little remains is fraught with dangers, but also great wealth.

The eye of crate has now turned its gaze upon this crumbling land. As you continue to delve into this far reaching plane, you will encounter 15 all-new regions swarming with foes clinging to the few remaining chunks of land that have not been consumed by the darkness. You can be certain that they will defend the last vestiges of their home with savage fervor.
Path of Exile: Heist - Upcoming Updates and Fixes
We're now in the second week of the Heist league and the team is continuing to monitor your feedback and reported issues. In this news post we'd like to give you an update about some recently reported issues and to provide a general indication of what we're working on. Please note that a lot of the plans here are early and may change as they undergo development and internal testing.
Vaporum: Lockdown Reviews

ScreenRant - 2.5/5
Overall, Vaporum: Lockdown takes an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Not much has changed since the original, and it doesn't offer a different experience to Legend of Grimrock beyond a different setting and focusing on one player character instead of a party system. To anyone looking for more in this genre, or maybe looking to scratch a BioShock itch, the game will serve its purpose admirably. But for anyone who wants something new, didn't love those games, or never saw the appeal of grid-based RPGs in the first place, there isn't much that Vaporum: Lockdown has to offer that will change their minds.
Chalgyr’s Game Room - 8.3/10
While it may act as a prequel to the original, Vaporum: Lockdown is an excellent return to the Arx Vaporum tower. Capitalizing on the features of the original while also making some minor adjustments to how you interact with the environment, this was hard to put down as I tried my best to help Ellie on her journey to escape this scientific wonder turned deathtrap
Save or Quit - No Score
I played the original Vaporum, and found it to be one of the best games of its type. So it was hard to not go into this one with some expectations. Luckily Vaporum: Lockdown more than lives up to those expectations. Combat is fast and fun, although ultimately very similar to the original game, but where Lockdown truly shines is with its puzzles. These has to be some of the most well designed puzzles in any RPG to date, and the balance between action and puzzle solving is really good. It’s only right at the very end of the game that this balance ends up feeling a little bit off, but even then it never ended up feeling tedious.

Checking Wikipedia… looks like Scepter of Goth only supported up to 16 people. That's not enough to earn the first M in MMO, in my opinion. Still a pioneer, though!

It doesn't matter what's *not* enough.
You need to state a precise number needed for m. Is it 2? 20? 200? or 20 billion?
And what's mmo anyway? Is it soon to be dead Zynga's Farmville? It's not? How come it's not, billions are playing it. Were.

We enjoyed hearing your thoughts on our last blog and have followed many of the discussions it kicked off within the community. It’s very encouraging for us to hear that you appreciate the steady update cadence and the behind-the-scenes looks at our early work. We’re also excited by all the positive reactions we’re seeing to the art, cinematics, and the addition of open-world gameplay to the Diablo franchise. The team has pored over a lot of constructive feedback regarding the current direction of itemization, and we’re looking to give you an update on items later in the year. Some of the progress we’ve made will speak directly to the questions we’ve seen raised in the community, so stay tuned!
