Someone in comments on the article said:
"Go VLC or go home".

I couldn't phrase it better. There indeed are some good media players out there, but only VLC runs everything without needing codecs/codecpacks. Means, with it your PC will never ever end up in codec hell.

Too bad they aren't saying WHICH version of Quick Time is affected … I do wonder whether my Quick Time 2.1 player is affected as well ?

Third solution, of which almost naturally thinks of, simple because of The Internet being oh so much omnipresent :
Play it on an standalone PC with no connections at all (only mouse & keyboard).
