Been playing Black Desert Online closed beta over the weekend. It is a MMO but if you love Skyrim you will love this game. It’s one seamless world (no loading screens at all, even for indoors etc) and its absolutely beautiful on mid range PC so it’s an explorers heaven! It’s one of the very few games these days where the night is really dark and you need lanterns to get by! There are lot of small touches like this in the game.

The game has lot of different PvE systems (trading, crafting, node management, fishing, boat build, horse taming and breeding etc) and it will overwhelm you very easily but I say that in good way. I don’t feel lost in MMO these days but I was lost and clueless in Black Desert and to me that’s good thing since the game is trying to do something’s different from all other games these days.

The combat is pretty good as well. Again, there is lot going on and you really need to learn the system however you can play in “easy” mode as well and just button mash if you want. People say MMO are grind but I didn’t feel that way. Some people were getting to 1- 50 in 15 hours and going from 50 to 55 lot longer but its matter of weeks rather than month. There are varity of classes but annoying bit is that they are gender locked. However note that most class have male and female versions.

Yes it’s a PvP game but the penalty of killing non PvP player is so huge that you will not get any ganging etc. Most of the PvP in this game will be limited to Guild v Guild etc. I think you can simply ignore the PVP and follow the PvE path. The game is $30 and I am quite sure quite a few hundred quality hours to be had from this game. Oh just don’t look at the their Cash Shop! It has crazy prices but you don’t need anything from it!

Black Desert Online has adopted a Guild Wars-like pay once, play forever business model for its western launch, supported by an item store.
This sounds very good.
Well... Play to the moment the servers get shut down but this is not EA so it won't happen fast.

Ten Ton Hammer has crunched the numbers on the MMO’s premium currency, Pearls, and discovered some astounding price tags – $32 for a character-specific bind-on-equip costume and weapon skin set, for example.
Scamware.

Sure, the game looks great.
But then again why would you buy a turd in a shiny wraping - just because of that wrapping?

The source article VG247 is referring on:
http://www.tentonhammer.com/news/bl...desert-online-reveals-outrageous-store-prices

Any rumors on when will all those virtual currencies become illegal?

Yes the costume prices are expensive but you don't need them. These are mainly cosmetic and doesn't have any power so no need to buy them. However if you need your character to look like catwalk model then you need chill out on the cash shop

You probably don't get my point.
I'm the crazy spender when it comes to game clothes - however I'm talking about RL rags. I have heaps and heaps of stuff I wear all the time with game themes. Everywhere.
For example I've just ordered "mid or feed" t-shirt because MOBA.

But here we're talking about digital thing, something you won't put on yourself and go for a walk, on a job or get drunk outside in it.
And they're charging for just one digital skin - $32?! You can get a full tripleA title for that sum a couple of months past it's release, man!

And unlike the realworld rags, in this case noone was needed to choose materials (cotton, wool, skin, artificial, etc), noone was needed to apply proper colors, noone was needed to sew it all in different sizes and hell noone is using a 3d space to store it then transport it to the buyer.

Yes, you may argue it's cosmetics only. And for a guy old enough with one foot in the grave, me, I wouldn't ever buy it.
But if my friend has that some particualr skin in the game, I want one myself if I'm 13-15 otherwise I'd feel like the world is doomed.
To hide how overpriced it actually is, there's a virtual currency so you can't imagine easily without a paper how much it really costs. It's a scam.

Well, I hate Skyrim, so that point of comparison is out the window :p How does it compare to Archeage? Is there a cash shop that pervades the gameplay as in that game? It sounds like the obnoxiously overpriced cosmetics are already covered by Joxer's post. Is it truly sandbox, or mostly themepark w/ railroaded content?

The $32 thing is not just one digital skin. its pack which includes armour, weapons etc. However I agree that the costumes prices way too high and I think they can make more money buy reducing the prices.

I have not played Archeage so cannot comment on that.

I have seen the cash shop in beta and it has mostly cosmetic and convenient items which save you some time so I don't think it affects the game play in any meaningful way.

There is one cash shop item, which hides your name in PvP. Some people are upset that it gives advantage to people in PvP since in this game you can really hide in bushes and tall grasses etc. Even in PvE I get surprised by mobs hiding in grass! Sometimes they are hard to see. Anyway I don't know if that is huge advantage or not but this is as bad as it gets in BD right now in terms of cash shop affecting game play.

I don't think its truly sandbox but its certainly not themepark like WoW, GW2, ESO, Wild star etc. But then what game do you consider that is truly sandbox?

Nice we came to a compromise! :D
Since I believe you'll play the game for a while, and since I would actually want to have some fun with it's visuals and maybe other content, do please give me a nudge when they lower those prices.

I'd buy, if not overpriced, something like this (LoL, Riven, skin called Battle Bunny):

Erm, that looks anatomically impossible. Somehow disproportional. Dunno. Feels awkward like some bad case of photoshop. :(

Seems like this new breed of Online "RPGs" is only about showing off of how much you can spend in cash shops and dressing your virtual babes in fine lingerie.

The fun of finding new armor is not there anymore - nowadays you buy it with RL money and can look like badass veteran already at lvl 1.

Ah, there was an article recently about the amount of Skyrim porn that is watched on the internets. Some of the vids have over a million hits… :end:

I see what you are saying but these days players are not willing to pay a monthly subscription and you can't run MMO with just box sale alone hence why developers are forced to come up with cash shops. And what can you sell on cash shop that isn't considered P2W, well cosmetic lingerie i guess

But getting cool armor was one of the main goals in this type of games, no? So what's the goals now, when you are buying cool armor instead, eh?

Also take ESO as good example - you still can find and make many styles of cool armor ingame apart from cash shop. That's the right way to do it my my opinion.

ESO is not right thing to do, patching singleplayer games instead of pouring all $ into MMO is.

Gaming was overtaken by fashionistas, nothing we can do about it, especially when they are the one paying for those F2P games to exist.

For me at least character progression is that main aim. Yes getting cool looking gear is part of that but its not the end all of character progression.

But the general point still stands that, having a costume on cash shop will sort of "devalue" the game regardless of if you can get the costume in game via other means etc. If someone has cash, they look cool at day one and others will in few days time etc. But cash shops are here to stay now...

Well, I would guess the majority of people buying skimpy outfits for $30 is not fashionistats, but rather young males with lots of spots.

People buying white dresses in strange cuts for $5000 might be your fashionistats, so they probably haven't reached most games yet.

I was stupid enough to pre-order this and I tried it briefly.

Literally, truly, I was disgusted.
