What games are you playing now?

Dear Frictional Games

I have always tried to support indie developers as much as I could, not because I'm a nice guy mind you, but because indie games tend to be a lot more creative and exciting. In any case I find your behavior towards me to be most inappropriate.

I admit that I have, on occasion, boasted that when it comes to horror I have a certain endurance, but this is no horror - this is MURDER.

Yes Frictional Games, I see what you're trying to do to me… you are trying to KILL ME. You figure that either a heart attack or sleep deprivation will do the trick. Why do that to me? Why? I bought your game… I gave you my money… Is it because I didn't do so until it went on sale? Is it because I never played Penumbra even though I've got the two first parts?

Well know this: I will not submit! My heart is strong - I was recently tested, and I can manage with a little less sleep. Jonathan Boakes and Nucleosys have tried to assassinate me recently too. They may not have been as determined and persistent as you but their efforts where admirable. They didn't succeed though and neither will you.

Sincerely etc etc

tl;dr version: 'Amnesia' is f*ing scary!

Been playing Oblivion this weekend.

Really hoping to finish the main quest by the time Skyrim is released. Although I've been playing the game for a few years, I have barely scratched the surface of the MQ, and the only guild questline I've completed so far is the Dark Brotherhood.

Unfortunately, I've installed quite a few mods, with the result that there are now 9 new religious factions and a number of new Necromancer factions, vampire clans, etc., each with their own questlines, as well as some excellent quest mods like Myths and Legends.

It's a daunting, but fun challenge.

The way to complete the main quest quickly in Oblivion, or for that matter any open world game, is to not get sidetracked. Depending on your personality though, it's easier said than done.

I got sidetracked for a long time with Oblivion then eventually I sat down and just plowed through the main quest just for the sake of getting it done. Can't say it was the most enjoyable experience ever, in fact it's probably one of the least enjoyable if you just do the main quest straight through, but it gets the job done.

I wonder if anyone ever made a 'skip all the Oblivion gates' mod. If there were such a thing, the main quest might actually be enjoyable, albeit extremely short.

Swept up by the spirit of Halloween I made a couple of impulse buys from Steam:

Dead Space Pack Included Dead Space 1 & 2. It's all right, but I really don't like the over the shoulder perspective or the keyboard mouse controls. This game was clearly targeted to console controllers, can they be used in the PC version?

Amnesia For $4 US this was a steal, but I'm disappointed in how the contents in rooms are pretty generic and repeated. For that price, though, it could be much worse. It's still very atmospheric.

Haunted House - Not really my type of game, I thought it was going to be more adventure game style or something. Turns out it's more of a level-based puzzler/chase type of game. Not my thing.

Zombie Shooter 2. Graphics are awful, controls are wonky, game seems unfair at times - but it's oddly compelling. I kept finding myself reloading the survival mode and mowing down zombies w/ glee, even tho I knew i was doomed once the armed zombies hit the scene. Something about killing zombies, i just love doing it so much. Very cathartic, taking out my woes on the undead

Dead Island's been patched up. I like that one a lot more than ZS2.

Also, if you haven't played Dead Rising 2 (can't remember if you have or haven't) the new one is great. Wish I didn't shell out 40 bucks for it though. It's a good expansion/upgrade, but 40 bucks was way too much.

Still I'll get my money's worth out of it. The zombies are upgraded, new characters and a new area to explore. Lots of fun despite it being a "reimagining" of DR2. Grab it when it goes on sale.

Best of all there is sandbox mode now. I can explore the mall at my leisure. Spent hours just exploring more areas, tackling the challenges and just having fun with it. You still get the psychos and everyone of the survivors will attack you at some point. Even Chuck is in it. Poor guy's a psycho now.

I finished my first play through of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. I don't get the hate this game garners. Installation was a nightmare, and Steam patches broken and UBI support weak; but once running with manual patches, I experienced few bugs. A couple of instances getting stuck in the environment, one crash, maybe.

I played on max graphics settings, and I thought the level designs were creative, pretty and atmospheric. The sound also greatly added to the atmosphere.

I played as a mage, spamming fireballs with max magic affinity and mana regeneration.

I am replaying now as a strength-based swordsman.

This is one of the VERY few games I have been willing to replay a second time right away. The gameplay changes significantly between a mage build and melee combatant. Also the multiple ways to handle enemies provides variety: kicking, impaling, setting on fire, stunning, shooting, hacking, throwing, charming, etc… It's a lot of fun. I can see additional playthroughs (stealth/critical, or archery specialist, and some other combo variations with certain spells). The gameplay is noticeably lacking in much that is tedious (except for maybe too many zombies). This make replayability high for me. Also, few to no respawns makes me really happy.

I did have some trouble triggering the power attacks, but that was probably operator error. Playing as a melee build, I am starting to get the hang of it.

For an action/RPG, though simplistic in the RPG aspects, I think this a great game.

trapped dead
its a great zombie game that unlike the hordes of actiony other games, is the closest game i think to the much anticipated dead state
its a throw back to the zombie 80 movies with slow zombies and a story line with comic book style montages and dialogs. of course its not an rpg though it is like the commandos games which hold a special place in my heart. you have inventories and each character you aquire/save has different stats and abilities to use either melee/ranged weapons effectively or in the case of the doctor do more than just stop the bleeding (which attracts zombies from a large range) with medkits. ammo is scarce and the game has an active pause to issue commands. plus i can't remember anyother games especially a zombie game that had a playable character in a wheelchair—seeing him wheel around with a double barreled shotgun is great. the levels are huge and just the commando games can take hours each depending on your play style. there's save points that can be used once throughout the level. also the traps are cool to and if used effectively can save ammo and heath. luring zobies to the electrocution chair room that has water on the floor was a huge help on the prison level i just completed.
i bought it for $5 but this game is easily worth full price.

tropico 3
after owning it for over a year i finally got into it and nearly blew my entire sunday on the first level. just couldn't let the city go and kept on long after i'd completed the level. its a beautiful looking and fun city builder that has all the bells and whistles to make it immersive from the elections to the radio stations and people mulling about. also this had to have been patched in but its quite omninous that one of the leaders you can preselect is a dark-skinned entrepeneur chap named "voodoo pizzaman"

Finally coming close to finishing original Deus Ex. Definitely better game than DE:HR. But that was to be expected.

I expect the majority of hate DMoMM received was from long-time M&M fans. It wasn't too long after they slapped us in the face with that game of which we do not speak in polite company (the one that supposedly came after MM8) and then they rolled out an action game. Mucho salt on the wound.

Had they called the game Dark Messiah of Strength and Sorcery, I expect reactions would have been more positive.

Yeah, that was my guess as well. Bitter fans of the old, not liking the new KIND of game. That would never happen today, would it? ;)

For what it is, a VERY linear FP dungeon crawl / RPG-lite action game, I liked it better than Batman, even though Batman was more non-linear. Much less repetitive and interesting gameplay, and some real character design choices.

The controls for DS1 are a bit touchy, and you might have to tweak the config file to tighten them up a bit. DS2 was better in that regard. I actually preferred keyboard and mouse, but you can use a controller as well.

Actually, I recall most people liking it just fine. It's not as if the majority hated it. There may have been an outspoken minority making a stink about it, but I don't remember that much fuss.

I liked it quite a bit, although I'd stop short of calling it "great".

LOL! That's my impression, DMoMM wasn't Arx Fatalis, wasn't Might and Magic (or Heroes of Might and Magic), wasn't the game people wanted for the franchise or developer.

Yes, there was some criticism in that regard but since the game wasn't called Might & Magic X or Arx Fatalis 2 people got over it pretty well. As for the game itself, I don't remember people screaming, scratching, begging for a sequel but it seemed like most people had a good time with it. The reception was fairly positive overall.

I remember lots of bad reviews, and some pretty outspoken stinkers.

49 But it's the game's many bugs and glitches, not mere repetition, which sap Dark Messiah's might and magic. [Feb. 2007, p.77]

Yep, I thought so...

Of course, the Euro reviews are glowing... bah... This was before I found this site and its wisdom. ;)

Just like something like Avatar, one of my favorite examples, which is a movie that "universally" appeals due to the nature of the story and the visual spectacle. Something which as a "recipe" should appeal to most people - and it certainly does.

Personally, I think it's a complete piece of shit with absolutely nothing that appeals to me, as an individual, in a way that makes it a worthwhile experience - but I also understand that I'm "strange" in how I don't think a movie is good just because it looks good.

When people ask my opinion of Avatar I always say "It's a very pretty screensaver".

re: DMoMM. I got it a while back as part of an Ubi M&M pack on Steam. Really should get around to playing it one day.
