Matt Chat 477: Jagged Alliance 2

This episode covers Jagged Alliance 2, widely considered one of the best turn-based strategy/tactics/RPG hybrids of all time. Whatever you call it, it's a whole lotta fun, even if you suck at it. That's because the writing is so snappy and the characters are full of personality. Hey, it's considered a classic for a reason!

What Locations are in BioSynth: Rising?
You probably saw a few screenshots or videos about BioSynth…

… maybe you noticed that some of the locations seem quite different.

What’s going on?

Are we just crazy or there’s a reason for that?

You see, we worked on the lore a lot – we want to convey a complex and lively world. There’s a story behind everything you see.

  • Robots have free will? There’s a story behind it.
  • There’s a desert out there? There’s a story behind it.
  • A huge terrifying mutant is crushing your character? There’s a story behind it.
  • Etc…
Thus, to understand the map diversity, it helps to know a little bit of the lore.

Queen's Wish 2: The Tormentor Update - Make-a-Dungeon
Happy Holidays from Spiderweb Software! This is not a full Queen’s Wish 2 development update, which is coming in a couple weeks. (Quick summary: We’re writing the game.)

One of our stretch goals was a new storyline. We didn’t quite get there, but we were close enough that we want to do it anyway! We’re doing something different for this bonus side quest. We’re asking all our backers for ideas to help us make it!!
Cyberpunk 2077 A Year Later - PC Gamer
I'd love to be writing a year later that it's a great time to be jumping back into Cyberpunk 2077. Apparently a lot of new players are having a great time. But honestly, if you've waited this long, I recommend waiting another year to see if more than just bugs get patched. A lot—but not nearly everything—has been fixed in a year, but making Cyberpunk 2077 whole will mean not just fixing what's broken but addressing what's lacking. I'm sure they'll eventually do the first part. I'm not so sure about the second. Maybe I'll try again next December.

I still have to play the first game. I will, one day!
I'm curious to hear if the DLC is any good. :)

According to the trailer, the next DLC will ne named "Back to the Futon". I think, Futon is some kind of bed brand ?

Medieval Dynasty Third Person View - Teaser

Hello everyone! We're happy to make Medieval Dynasty accessible to an even broader audience soon!

In first person view it may be disturbing not to see your own body, this can affect perception and cause unwanted efficiencies like nausea and dizziness. The dreaded motion sickness.

The Third Person View is countering this effect and helps those affected, so they can play games that would normally take their toll on well-being.

Fallout: New Vegas' Plot Explained - The Gamer
For those who haven't played New Vegas before, they might be surprised to hear that its main questline is rather straightforward, only taking a handful of hours to beat. We highly recommend you play the game yourself, but if you can't find the time to play through this massive RPG, here's a quick overview of what happens in the main story of Fallout: New Vegas.
Latest Starfield Teaser Video Makes Bethesda Sound Like It's Stuck In The Past
We still don't know much about Starfield, but the fact this latest video opens with Howard waxing lyrical about players gaining satisfaction from achieving things and saving the world suggests the studio still finds this idea attractive. However, since it's entirely possible to ignore your destiny in Elder Scrolls games and make your own stories, I am encouraged by the fact that I may be able to engage with Starfield on my own terms. Even so, I wish Bethesda would expand its horizons and think about video games on a deeper level, because there's a lot more to this medium than just coddling players to make them feel important and empowered. I honestly can't think of a more boring reason to play a video game.

Xenonauts 2 - November Update
As November draws to a close it's once again time for our monthly update. This month we've mostly been working on turning the experimental builds of V22 into something ready to be released on our main Steam / GOG branches. This has involved a total of 6 hotfixes, which might be a record for us!
Sony planning new subscription service to rival Xbox Game Pass - Bloomberg
According to the documents reviewed by Bloomberg, Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to keep the PlayStation Plus name, but phase out PlayStation Now.

While the details may not be finalized documentation outlines a three-tier service:

First Tier - Includes existing PlayStation Plus benefits.

Second Tier - Includes a large catalog of PlayStation 4 and, eventually, PlayStation 5 titles.

Third Tier - Includes extended demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PSP games.

People familiar with Sony Interactive Entertainment's plans also told Bloomberg the company is expanding its efforts in cloud gaming. A representative for Sony Interactive Entertainment did not immediately respond to Bloomberg's request for comment.

It's been a great year for RPGs, if you hate and fear the new - PCGamer
In 2019, Disco Elysium pushed the RPG genre so far people said it wasn't really an RPG at all. They called it an adventure game, or a visual novel. Disco Elysium really was an RPG of course…one with roots in CRPG classic Planescape: Torment and the kind of tabletop roleplaying with actual dice but it was revolutionary enough to sail right to the edge of our convenient definitions. It felt like evidence of a genre that was thriving.

While games directly influenced by Disco will take a while to start arriving, it felt like the product of an overgrown RPG greenhouse. Surely that same climate was about to produce even more unusually proportioned fruit?

Maybe not. By contrast, in 2021 the genre felt safe and predictable. For starters, it was dominated by remasters, re-releases, and ports. As well as Disco Elysium's own Final Cut, there was Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Diablo 2: Resurrected, Final Fantasy's pixel remasters, Nier Replicant, Legend of Mana HD, Geneforge 1 - Mutagen, more Kingdom Hearts games on PC than any human could ever actually play, and the incremental update of Skyrim Anniversary Edition. Further ahead, we can look forward to The Witcher 3's next-gen edition and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake.

There's nothing inherently wrong with re-releasing old games. It used to be that classics were often lost, either hard to find or hard to get running on modern machines, the history of the medium evaporating behind us. Though games are still routinely delisted these days, overall the industry is better at preserving and valuing its own history than it used to be. (And profiting from that, of course.)

What's surprising is that most of the new RPGs that squeezed out between 2021's herd of re-releases didn't feel like the future, either. They skewed toward celebrations of the past, the kind of games that will inevitably be described as "love letters."

Star Wars: The Old Republic - Update on Legacy of the Sith
We have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Legacy of the Sith to February 15, 2022.

Like many of you reading this, I personally cannot wait for the launch of our next expansion. I've greatly enjoyed my time exploring the depths of Manaan, testing out new story and ability combinations with Combat Styles, and more during internal playtests.

Legacy of the Sith is something the team has been hard at work on for quite a while but as we get ever closer to launch, it is clear that we need a bit more time. We’re focusing additional testing on the many areas we have changed throughout the game to deliver the experience we want, and one that you deserve.

In addition, during our public test server (PTS) your feedback was invaluable in helping us to shape this expansion. Outside of story content (to avoid spoilers) the majority of the expansion and its features will be returning to the PTS for all subscribers this week.

We're thrilled to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Star Wars: The Old Republic with all of you over the next year with Legacy of the Sith and more!

Empire of Ember - Dev Blog #19 - Last Content Update before Full Release
It's been some time since the last dev blog, but we haven't been idle at Poleaxe Games, and, as the end of the last milestone approached, we've been working tirelessly to finish the last level of the game.

And finally..after almost four years in development and eight months on Early Access, we're proud to announce that we've implemented the LAST UPDATE that completes the main storyline of Empire of Ember.
Witcher 4 Will Start Development Next Year - Early Game
The news comes via CDPR boss Adam Kicinski himself, who was interviewed by the Polish paper Rzeczpospolita. When asked what the next step for Cyberpunk and the Witcher are, he mentioned that both franchises will embark on their next steps in 2022. According to him, CD Projekt Red is aiming for parallel development. Apparently, this simultaneous pro
Bloodborne Vibes Weren't Intentional, Say Pinocchio Souls-Like Devs - Kotaku
Earlier this month, South Korean developer Round8 Studio shared early gameplay footage for Lies of P, its upcoming Souls-like based on the classic Pinocchio fairy tale. And while the dark fantasy setting elicited obvious comparisons to From Software masterpiece Bloodborne, the devs recently told Kotaku that any similarities between the two games were inadvertent.
Popular Skyrim Mod Removed By Bethesda - TheGamer
For some reason, Bethesda removed a fan-made bug fix from the Skyrim mod page on console. "Reconciliation: Skyrim Anniversary Edition Ultimate Patch" was created by user Snipey360 as a competitor to the monstrously popular Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP), which some users have found issues with due to its size. Despite seeming to have permission from all the mods it borrowed from, Bethesda removed it without explanation, leading some to believe that the company is showing favouritism towards the USSEP mod.
How Starfield Will Continue an Elder Scrolls Tradition - Den of Geek
Regardless, this is another example of how Starfield will seemingly be a pretty traditional Bethesda RPG in many respects. While we have no doubt that Starfield will deviate from some of the studio's traditions in certain ways (its more traditional sci-fi setting alone is already a notable deviation from The Elder Scrolls and the studio's Fallout titles), it's really starting to feel like those who love or hate Bethesda's recent RPGs may be able to start drawing some conclusions about how excited they should be about the upcoming 2022 game.
Dragon Age 4 Reaffirms Single-player Commitment - Game-debate
The Dragon Age games are some of the biggest Fantasy RPGs out there, and developed by one of the most renowned RPG developers, BioWare. As work continues on the next game in the series, the developers have reaffirmed their focus on a single-player experience, with more details coming in 2022.
Former BioWare boss will reveal his online RPG at The Game Awards - GamesRadar
Flynn dropped a teaser for the announcement on his personal Twitter account, saying that the studio planned to reveal its project as part of the big awards show. Most of what we know about the unannounced game comes from a 2019 Game Informer interview, where it was framed as an online RPG. Though parent company Improbable has avoided calling the project an MMORPG, it does seem to be taking aim at that overall part of the games market.
Fable 4 Clearly Understands The Importance Of Its Roots - TheGamer
There’s no way of telling whether Fable 4 is going to be good or not just yet - I mean, we don’t even know when it’s coming out, so making unfounded assumptions right now is kind of useless. What I will say is that knowing Playground recognizes the necessity to make this a Fable game as opposed to an open-world RPG that has been specifically engineered based on what else is popular in 2021 - or 2022, or 2023, depending on the current production pipeline planned for it - is refreshing. As of right now, it’s honestly all I need to hear.

Elex 2 Interview With Piranha Bytes - Gamepressure
Piranha Bytes’ games are quite popular among certain Western RPG fandoms, all thanks to the crude classic, Gothic, with which many a player back in the day discovered the genre. They only remaining trace of the former glory, however, is mostly the fact that the fandom is willing to shrug off more bugs and mistakes than people are generally willing to accept in AAA blockbusters. We just ignore stuff like clunky animations and weird behavior of characters, instead taking in the atmosphere, heroes, and the game world.

The following is a conversation with two main developers of Piranha Bytes – Bjorn and Jenniifer Pankratz – where we asked about their ideas about Elex 2: what did they like the most about making th game, what was the process, where does the signature Piranha style come from, and how is it possible that the game was rated T in Germany (at least 12 years old).

Dying Light 2 Stay Human Cinematic Trailer

Among all the challenges people face in The City, staying human is by far the greatest one of all. Unimaginable choices must be made as everyone's fighting to write their own story. One in which they live on. And you? Will you #StayHuman, even against all odds?
The Digital Antiquarian on Might and Magic
The long-running Might and Magic CRPG series is an easy thing for a project like this one to overlook. These games were never obviously, forthrightly innovative, being content to rework the same high-fantasy territory over and over again. Meanwhile their level of commercial success, although certainly considerable at times, never became so enormous as to make them sit up and demand our attention.

Ah OK, I will see what they mean by adventure if you say it is not RPG. But still Gollum and Star Wars! I actually loved those old games about Bilbo adventures, it looked like those old adventure games, but you could roleplay Bilbo (or some hobbit) if you know what I mean.

Yeah I get you but the games aren't even advertised as RPGs. Action Adeventure games with RPG elements like I said not to confuse readers. You don't see Pure RPGs from big developers nowadays. That's a shame as Starfield looks to be the only one next year.

Yes, this trailer of Steelrising is really something! :)

EDIT: right, Nightingale. I was waiting for more information, but when I saw it was another survival I lost interest and decided to wait for something more substantial on the game.
