SKALD: Against the Black Priory - Development Update
Wait, what? Is it February already? All I can say is time flies when you're having fun. This update is a bit overdue but as always, if I'm a bit tardy in posting on the devlog it's because I'm making our dream game.

The new year has been a torrent of making cool plans, have Covid wreck it all and instead write awesome code!

Our big carrot of Q1 2022 was that Raw Fury and I were going to GDC in San Francisco to promote Skald. We always knew it was a risky prospect and as Omicron ramped up over Christmas we reconsidered and canceled the trip. And let me tell you: I'm almost glad we did!
Wigmund - Demo Released
Based on the feedback that we have gathered, we have decided to offer you the opportunity to experience Wigmund's uniqueness. Therefore, we have released our Demo. It contains The Lonely Valley - that is a small open-world map - with all its dungeons.
Edge Of Eternity - Japanese Voice Acting
We are very pleased to announce that Japanese voice acting is now available in the 1.2 update!
BioSynth: Rising - Final Steps for the Demo 0.1
At the moment, we’re dealing with the final steps for the demo that we call “0.1”: a demo for the team to play and check that everything is going according to the plan. So we’ll be testing and fixing the 0.1.

Once we’re happy with the result, we’ll be sharing the demo with the people that backed us on Kickstarter and the people that supported the project with a pre-purchase here on our website. That would be the demo “1.0” – remember we’re talking about the demo, not the final game… and not even an early access of the game.

Battle Brothers Of Flesh and Faith DLC Announcement

The focus of the DLC will be on adding two new origins to Battle Brothers, and thereby two fresh and different ways to approach the game. These two origins the Oathtakers and the Anatomists will be the most detailed origins in the game to date. They both come with unique mechanics, new equipment, new character backgrounds, their very own story events, and even a custom-tailored banner each. And because more variety is always nice, the DLC will add more than 50 new events in total to the game!
RPG Maker Unite Software Revealed for 2022

As the name implies, the software is now based on the Unity game engine, and thus users can create role-playing games that can be played natively as mobile apps. The software will debut on Windows and macOS this year.
Avowed Reportedly Targeting Early 2023 Release Date
It's certainly turning into a fine couple of days for rumours. Assassin's Creed Valhalla Makes Ubisoft Than $1 Billion

Dragon Age 4 Releases in Next 18 Months? - Eurogamer
Development on BioWare's next big Dragon Age game is going well, and it should see release in the next 18 months. That's according to a fresh report on the game's production by Venturebeat journalist Jeff Grubb, which pegged its release to late 2023. Last month, reports appeared to rule out a 2022 release for the new Dragon Age, something which had - once upon a time - originally been on the cards.

Starfield: Painting a Journey Through Space

The trailers look good so far. I wish they respected physics and sciences in general in the lore of the game. Please, please, please, do not lose control over science as Bioware did. Too much fiction and it might as well be fantasy...Fantasy is fine, but could we for once get something more real?

Bethesda has got you covered. I know an insider who has described the game to me. The game takes 20 years to play. Not in game years, actual years. For the first 10, you don't have the money to do anything beyond grow plants in zero G environments, stuff like that.

Then you get to build prototypes. They all fail. The endgame is building your first probe and trying to avoid technical issues that ground it before or during launch. If you succeed, the probe will arrive at its destination, one of Jupiter's moons, in six years. The first DLC, to be released in 2028, is reading telemetry from the probe.

From BioWare to Beer: How Greg Zeschuk Makes Dreams Come True -WIRED
As a medical student in the 1990s, BioWare cofounder Greg Zeschuk told his future wife that if he could, he’d make video games for a living. But he knew better than to plan his life around it. “It was a pipe dream,” is how he put it back then.

The story of how the pipe dream became a reality—one that saw BioWare turn out blockbuster games including Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic before being sold to Electronic Arts along with another company for $860 million in 2007—is something of a folk legend in Edmonton, Alberta, where Zeschuk has spent most of his life.

Now Zeschuk, 53, is living another dream: He’s started a brewing company, Blind Enthusiasm, and he runs two microbreweries, the Market and the Monolith, along with a restaurant, Biera, which is considered one of the hottest eateries in his hometown.

Tencent buying former BioWare general manager's new studio - RPS
Three months after the new studio of former BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn announced their game Nightingale, they're being bought by Tencent. The media conglomerate are buying the studio, Inflexion Games, off tech company Improbable, who say they're too busy with the metaverse nowadays. So far, the plan remains the same: launch the multiplayer Victorian fantasy craft-o-survival game into early access later this year.

Master of Magic Remake - February 2022 Developer Diary
The Magic of Master of Magic

This month we decided to go back to the beginning as it were and talk about what exactly makes Master of Magic magical? And the answer of course is spellcasting.

Over 200 Spells

Firstly, there are so many different types of spells. There are resistance spells, buffing spells, battle spells and global spells that can affect the whole world, terrain changing spells, curses, damage dealing blasts, crowd control, transforming spells, creating objects, summoning creatures and/or heroes, buffing the Wizards themselves, making your towns more efficient/or making your enemies towns suffer the list goes on. And even within these types of spells, there are unique characteristics and effects. For example, while some spells share a simple and common mechanic, like summoning spells - they pretty much do what they say on the can, they summon things, but even they can sometimes surprise you.
Underrail Development Update - Steam Deck Preparations
Today we're pushing the 1.1.5.6 version to the main branch. If you missed the original release on experimental, you can check out the previous dev log, as well as subsequent patch notes, to see what's it all about.

Next week we're going to release an update that will be focused around making the game functional on Steam Deck and Proton in general. The game might still not be as comfortable to play on Steam Deck as we are not going to implement a specialized UI or gamepad controls right now. That's a bigger undertaking that will have to wait until I've cleared some of my Infusion development schedule.

Battle Brothers Developer Blog #145 - The Anatomists
Living in the world of Battle Brothers is no picnic. Between nobles for whom you are nothing but a chess piece in their great game, beasts that want to eat you alive, and necromancers that want to raise your corpse once you’re dead, how does one make sense of it all? The free ‘Of Flesh and Faith’ DLC coming to Battle Brothers on March 10th introduces two very different paths that promise salvation from this mortal coil, manifested in two new origins to play your campaign with. This week we’re dissecting the first of these, the ‘flesh’ in ‘Of Flesh and Faith’, the Anatomists. Let’s look inside!

Valve would help Microsoft put Game Pass on Steam - PCGamer
Will we ever see Game Pass on Steam? Audio player loading… It was a big moment for PC gaming when Microsoft stopped releasing its games exclusively through the Microsoft Store and started putting them on Steam. It wasn't every Microsoft game at first, but now it's gone that direction—just three days ago Bethesda announced it was dropping its own launcher and releasing everything on Steam going forward. But Microsoft also has Game Pass, a subscription service that's grown to millions of subscribers across Windows and Xbox, and those games notably still run out of its own app, not Steam. When I spoke to Valve president Gabe Newell about the Steam Deck last week, I asked him if Valve is interested in its own subscription service, or whether we could see Game Pass games on Steam in the future.
8 Minutes Of Elden Ring Running On Steam Deck - Gamespot
Elden Ring and Steam Deck share a launch date, so of course we had to know how the game looks and runs on the system. We set the game to medium graphic settings and get a solid performance outside of the occasional frame hitching, although that issue seems to be PC wide and not Steam deck Specific.

Knights of the Chalice II Update - Expanded Guidebook and MP3 Soundtracks
Hello everyone! The expanded guidebook and MP3 pack and the new version 1.23 of KotC 2 Augury of Chaos are now available for download here for both Windows and macOS.

Sadly, in February my attention was diverted away from KotC 2 many times because of a horrid inheritance procedure and three medical appointments. 'Horrid' is a euphemism here.
Production Problems With 'Dragon Age 4' Keep On Growing - Cracked
Saying that Dragon Age 4 has been through a troubled development would be something between a draconian and a massive understatement. I'd like to attribute this to a curse cast upon the company for telling a story that paints an Inquisition of any sort as the good guys, but Bioware's problems started long before when EA swallowed the company. This acquisition resulted in the absolute destruction of the Mass Effect series, as well as the incredibly messy stillbirth of Anthem, Bioware's once upcoming big new series. Dragon Age 4 remains the last beacon of hope for Bioware, and things don't look great.
Hidetaka Miyazaki Sees Death as a Feature, Not a Bug - NewYorker
The video-game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who’s in his late forties, has punished more players than perhaps anyone else. In Dark Souls, the 2011 fantasy game that made him famous, you play as a loin-clothed wretch, racing through sewers and cowering in forests. You’re attacked by a giant wolf, pugilist mushrooms, mephitic swamps, and a sword-wielding spider. If you fail to parry an aggressor’s lunge, or tumble off a rampart, you’re greeted by a superfluous message: “You Died.” After it fades, you’re reincarnated beside a bonfire, one of a series of checkpoints scattered throughout this mysterious, vaguely medieval world. Every one of your enemies has re-spawned, too..

That New Yorker article is quite good. Miyazaki himself articulates the why of his games, and I recommend anyone confused about the appeal of those games to read it.

George R. R. Martin hails Elden Ring as a 'landmark megahit' - PCGamer
"The wait is over," writes Martin. "Years in the making, Elden Ring was released last week, and has been taking the gaming world by storm. But don't listen to me. FromSoftware brought me on to do their worldbuilding, so I can hardly pretend to be objective."

An Overlooked Masterpiece 5 Years of Mass Effect Andromeda - Medium
I know, I know, I'm writing another a story on Mass Effect Andromeda, but with the game being five years old now, I think it's time to go over things again. Especially now that we've had the release of the Legendary Edition of the original trilogy and an announcement for a new installment in the series is practically imminent.
Anthem 2.0: One Year Later - Gamerant
On February 24, 2021, Christian Dailey, Anthem 2.0's lead developer in terms of rebooting the game, announced it was canceled. The writing was clearly on the wall, as just two weeks prior, a report confirmed EA was meeting to decide the game's future. The announcement came from BioWare, but both companies were involved in the decision to cancel Anthem 2.0 (or Anthem NEXT, as it was called both).

Dailey cited two reasons for the cancellation of the project: the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to focus on making Dragon Age and Mass Effect the best they can be. While the news overall was disappointing, the reasoning behind them can be understood. COVID-19 impacted much of the industry, and many more BioWare fans would not be happy if the new Dragon Age and Mass Effect games suffered. But, still, it seems Anthem 2.0 went to its grave too early
Starfield might not be Skyrim In Space - VG 24/7
At first glance, Starfield seems like a radical departure for Bethesda, firmly established as they are in the business of peddling passports to fantasy theme parks. Bloodthirsty Orcs. Scheming Elves. Sentient cats plying wares from roadside caravans. Colonies of suburban mannequins, intelligent zombies, and rogue supercomputers vying for a foothold in the bombed out ruins of a “Chicken In Every Pot” America that never quite was.

The tangible click-clunk of Starfield’s space race aesthetic is nothing like any of that. You can almost smell the machine oil, and feel the rumble of thruster fire. It’s grounded in something real, in things that have happened and are happening; an extrapolation of our current reality with its drone warfare and billionaire space tourism. But is it all that removed from worlds already charted?

Warren Spector Developing New IP -Triplepoint PR

Everytime I read 'Warren Spector', I can't help but think of Marvel's Moon Knight. Perhaps they're relatives, who knows? :)

Starfield might not be Skyrim In Space - VG 24/7

Huh? The most intriguing part of the article is the one that says "Starfield is set to release on PC and Xbox Series X/S on November 11." Is that true? Have they annouced it before? I don't recall this being covered here. Or perhaps it's just a 'placeholder date'???
