And now for something completely different!

Imagine yourself at the time of Napoleon. The height of the era of the English Redcoat. Wars are about canon, musket and horse or medieval Khans with their elephants, sabres and rabid hoards. Why was England able to win quite so many battles where so many others languished? The answers are many and varied, but one of the best secret weapons was the largely unsung battalions of Scotsmen. The world of the Redcoat was as much a Scottish world as English. And what was so special about these ranks of Scots from puny Scotland? The power of the bagpipe…

Imagine yourself on the field of battle. The chips are down, the nerves are wrecked, the chance of desertion is setting in… then… from afar you hear the faint drone of +5 morale to you and -5 morale to the enemy…

A wonderful rendition by a bunch of Germans there.

At a time when fantasy was as much a part of reality as space travel is to us today, imagine being from a world that knew nothing of Scotsmen but rumoured reputation and tales of giants and dragons. You're standing guard of your troop's designated terratory, preparing to challenge men from another land, and the sound of your enemy reaches you long before you can even see them… -5 morale to you, +5 morale to those devilish Redcoats…

It will be a shame when Scotland leaves the Union. The end of an era. But you'll barely find a single soldier that understands the issue, such is the usual disparity between military and civil life. It is also a shame that war itself has become something scientific instead of something fantastical while still being unable to end entirely. But if there's one thing that pervades the memory of an era, it's something altogether unique, something special, and something altogether unquantifiable, the magic of the bagpipe and drums that no army on earth could match…

If not one of these vids manages to bring a slight tear to the eye, you simply aren't human… :faq:

On top of going to see Steve Hackett in Tarrytown, NY in a couple of weeks, I just scored a ticket to see The Musical Box at Gramercy Theatre in New York City in January :)
