Myrthos, I'd suggest you to rename this thread to "Shortlisting the GOTY 2020 - Most Anticipated"

No, it takes into account all news postings and comments irrespective of the year.

But it also needed more news postings to get to that amount of comments. Using the ratio of comments per news posting, Realms Beyond is on top

That is not how it works :)
We are voting as part of the GOTY 2019 for the game we look forward to most in 2020.

Also doesn't have Black Geyser or whatever it's called.

Was going to vote for:

Realms Beyond
Black Geyser
Baldur's Gate 3

I've read numerous reports that BG3 might land late 2020.

As such I'll hold off voting until these omissions (and others listed by other members) are clarified.

I thought about mentioning that too, but couldn't find any place where the devs have ever officially said it'll be released in 2020. Only saw talk of an alpha/beta/whatever release.

edit: the latest "schedule update" post on their forums mentions a beta to be released on March 24 2020, but doesn't mention a full game release date:

I figured the criteria here was probably that it needs an officially stated 2020 release date to qualify. Because if not, there's a lot of other games to consider, like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Diablo 4, Encased, Copper Dreams, and Knights of the Chalice 2. Maybe even Starfield or ELEX 2. I don't believe any of them have been officially ruled out for 2020?

the number of games in the database with no or an incorrect release date is huge. So please keep the updates coming so we can update them.
Once updated I will generatie a new overview.

That one is the most anticipated for me :)

I think that the ratio is more appropriate than just the raw number of comments

The table centralizes bits of information.

A product like Urthuk, that should meet the expectations, is ignored.

Like in many other places.

This site regularly spits on so called casual players, mainstream players and the main expectation for the next year matches the same expectation that might be found elsewhere.

Conformity at its best, even though claiming otherwise.

I don't know if it's better, but you could use some derivation of the h-index which is used for scientific publications.

So a game would have an h-index of h, if it has h topics with at least h comments.

Not to say something totally irrelevant but one issue i have with the GOTY stuff is that (as stated by many people in this thread) very few people here have played a majority of those games that are serious contenders; and probably no one here has played all the games in the top 10. This makes the vote somewhat of a popularity vote (where popularity is generated by marketing/thread comments/videos/...) rather than a serious vote based on ones first hand impression of all the games in question.

Perhaps voters should be required to play some min. number of the candidates to provide an informed opinion from first hand experience? Otherwise what value is their vote esp if they are voting on a game they have never played ?

Perhaps, but there is no sure way to validate the amount of hours that someone claims to have played a game and it would probably be too much work to do so anyway.
