Piranha Bytes - Working On a New RPG

Enough of this hateful anti-Scavenger propaganda. Let the poor beasts spawn in peace.

I've only tried the Gothics of the PB offerings, but none of them worked for me. I plan on going back and replaying them someday because so many people here liked them.

I'm one of those rare people here that don't understand the fascination this site has with these games. I couldn't get into the first two no matter how hard I tried. Maybe its the FP nature of the game. I've not liked a lot of those including Deus Ex.

I didn't try Arcania because of the bad reports. Maybe they can come up with something other than Gothic and I'll like it.

Contrary to my expectations Risen 2 was my favorite of their games. I don't see any reason bothering with a detailed analysis and comparison of every little obvious aspect of it when I was just so much entertained by the whole, but I do think the freshness of the setting has a lot to do with it. I just felt I was having an adventure the likes of which I never had before. As such I see absolutely no reason to want a Gothic sequel myself, since it would just be the same game either way, only in that same tired fantasy setting.

I have no hope left for them. Risen was mediocre and Risen 2 was abysmal. At least on the 360. Even if you could put up with the horrible graphics and comical character animations it was just dull. I literally couldn't finish it, and open world RPGs are my thing!

I love exploring the island of Faranga. There's so many beautiful locations, and the music enhances the atmosphere perfectly. That's what keeps drawing me back to Risen. I've grown to love the Caribbean setting more than the Germanic setting of the Gothic games.

It'd be interesting to see another Risen game, though hopefully they'll put more effort into creating interesting lore and maintaining consistency.

Now that the intellectual property rights to Gothic are back in PB's hand, I wonder if they'll integrate the worlds of Gothic and Risen. Their Gothic games ended with the gods being banished, which happened to be the starting point of Risen, after all.

I thought Gothic 1 was a masterpiece. I have played Gothic 2, but still have yet to finish it. It just didn't grab me like the first game did. But I do intend on going back to finish it at some point, it was a good game.

I tried the demo of Risen, but it was not appealing to me, at all. And when I saw they were going to pirate stuff and ships in Risen 2, that was more than enough to keep me far away from it.

Maybe they will get back to their form they had when making Gothic 1, but we will see. I think a lot of the people who made that one are gone now to other companies.

I've never played the console ports, but it's generally known that they were of much lower quality than the PC versions. In fact, Piranha Bytes didn't even do the Xbox port of Risen themselves, they outsourced it to a French company called Wizarbox who did a very poor job of it.

Both Risen and Risen 2 were perfectly playable on the 360. At least they were a few months post-launch and post-patch. I don't think I had a single lock-up or crash and didn't notice any obvious bugs or glitches. Maybe I got lucky with both games.

*Their Gothic games ended with the gods being banished, which happened to be the starting point of Risen, after all* - - - - - not essentially correct.

Gothic (G1) has the full potential for any gamer to complete successfully including a conclusion to end the war between the gods all built into the game, its just that it was never realised or completed by any gamer, G2's story had to be different or divert slightly because of this, PB themselves admitted that the detour was slightly off-track, the add-on NotR was offered but storywise the goal 'conflict of the gods' was somehow lost within the process.

In a last desperate attempt to educate us all, PB gave us the impressive and unequalled G3 with the goal of reintroducing the overriding theme 'war between the gods' in a logical, easier build up as the game progressed in order to constructively simplify the non 'hand holding' or subliminal suggestivity of the theme (which is PB's main playability trade mark) so that we might finally find the solution to the story conflict, so far and yet again no-one has ever managed to show a successful conclusion to G3.

PS: there are no Jackal respawns in G3.

no-one has ever managed to show a successful conclusion to G3..

I don't know if your being serious, but yes the game has three endings. I managed to get all three.;) They conclude the game good enough for me.

The so called path of "Innos".

After finding Xardas and listening to his story, you'll have to go back to Rhobar and report. You'll then have to find all 5 adanos artifacts. After collecting them all ,find the Innos altar in the Monastery and prey – Innos talks to you giving you orders. You have to banish the Orcs from Myrtana and kill Zuben. The game ends when, after completing the quests he gave to you, you report back to him.

The so called "Beliar" path.

This time, after finding Xardas and collecting all the 5 artifacts, you'll have to put these artifacts on the Beliar’s altar in Bakaresh (with the staff of the Eternal Wanderer received from Zuben). To complete the game, you'll have to accomplish the quest he gives to you: Kill Xardas, Rhobar, Zuben and all the orc chieftains. After doing this, report back to him.

The last path, the so called "Xardas" one.

This time, you'll have to do what Xardas asks you. Go straight to the Hammer Clan and put the artifacts to the furnace (with the magic stone you received from Xardas). Go back to the necromancer and he'll ask you to kill the god elements in the world(Rhobar and Zuben) and to collect their staffs(the scepter of Varant and the staff of the eternal wanderer). After doing this, escort Xardas to the magic portal, activate it (use the artifacts taken from Zuben and Rhobar), and enter the portal.
Anyway I would still love to play another Gothic as they own the rights again.

@Couchpotato

Those conclusions are for each of the default paths and do not solve the conflict of the gods, they are false trails, detours from the true path. After playing to the end of each of those paths, the player becomes aware that the conflict has not been solved, as PB once suggested, "if you wish you can ignore them and go your own way" - the way of the druid is hard to comprehend even for the most die hard G3 fan. G1 also has a detour.
....................

If PB gave us gaming excellence and we failed to comprehend the solution then it is completely understandable why they did not continue with the difficult gods conflict theme. Instead they gave us easier, hand holding, more contemporary games in the form of the Risens. It will be interesting to see which direction PB take with their future games, they have declared they would never go back to the gothics.

On the good side, the gothics have yet to be solved by gamers with the necessary acumen and drive, who do not to give up when the going gets tough - casual gamers need not apply.

I can't tell if you're trolling, if you're mentally unhinged, or if you're always high while playing the Gothic games. In any case… you're giving PB too much credit in terms of the storyline. They clearly made things up as they went along, and didn't care much about maintaining consistency. The Gothic games are wonderfully immersive and a joy to explore (great landscapes, music, and atmosphere), but they're really not that philosophically deep.

A very important feature for me in Gothic 1 were characters. They felt like they were real, there was story behind and every character fit the story quite well (as far as I remember). Gothic 3 was different, characters felt like quest-givers. I don't even remember if I've finished it.
I liked Gothic 1 for new things that I have never seen in RPG before. Gothic 2 was a sort of technically improved version of Gothic 1 and was as good as Gothic 1. Risen 1 was OK and Risen 2 was also OK. Tried Arcania, but was not impressed and could not get too far.

Wulf has always been a devout Pirana Bitian of Gothician following.
This group of followers believe in the mystical ways of Adanos and are more righteous than the Water mages. They can see the Pirana even when others cannot.

These people are gifted.
...
Back to reality, Wulf has always been quite deep into the Gothic series to the point where he must have played the Gothic series at least 50 times over.
He can tell you where a certain amulet is in Gothic 1 even if it's hidden inside the bushes of a mountain you won't even think to climb in your first five playthroughs.

He's always very helpful and nice, but his thoughts on Gothic are certainly way out there.
Whether he does it for fun or through genuine belief, I cannot say.
Since he seems to be a very nice person and quite passionate about this, I basically treat it like people who believe in things I cannot relate to such as the Gods of most religions. Live and let live kind of thing.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how helpful Wulf has been to people playing the Gothic series. Only a few people come close, off the top of my head : Jemym (great guide), Uriziel and Gorath.

Back on topic,
I am still to finish Risen.
I couldn't finish G3, too long for me. I had clocked in over 100 hours but then studies took over and I never went back to it. I most probably wouldn't to be honest as a major part of the game feels very generic to me compared to G1/2...

When I do finish Risen, I would play Risen 2, before starting to play whichever new game they release. But I need a while to play it. Might play Risen 1 this Christmas. I have 2 weeks of holidays, but I am not planning on travelling this year. Or not much :)

This was a bad ramble. Probably doesn't make sense. Oh well. I'm not oging to rewrite it.

I wouldn't call PB's games philosophically deep, but to claim they were inconsistent and made it up as they went along is just foolish. Story-wise, I can't think of an open-world aRPG that's better save for perhaps Divinity II.

Divinity 2 isn't open-world, but I do agree with rest of the post.

Hardly news to be honest since as he says in the linked post they confirmed that they were working on an RPG a while ago. Maybe even a full year.
The absolute silence so far makes no sense to me. Either they've been granted a bigger budget and have been quite early in the developlement process or a (possibly) longer contract or we can just assume that DeepSilver's marketing department is simply being retarded.

Any news about Piranha Bytes is good news.;)

I agree that Deep Silver's marketing is being slow. The game might be targeting the new consoles. So their playing the waiting game.
