The TV Series discussion thread

Leftovers was worth watching, considering how bonkers the entire show was, I'm amazed it lasted for three series. While they didn't wrap up every niggling question, they did answer a lot by the end of the show.

And it looks like Ser Patrick Stewart is donning the Picard role again!!! That's a huge win for all of us that enjoy science fiction, I really thought we'd never see the like again after that Nemesis junk.

It's been ages since anything remotely good came out of the Trek franchise. As much as I adore Picard (he's my second favorite Trek character) - I very much doubt he's going to be enough to make it interesting again.

Discovery was particularly awful, in my opinion - and AFAIK some of the same people are involved with this new thing.

Agreed, that Kurtzman fellow is a spectacular hack, in my opinion. However, I'm hoping that other more reliable folks get involved in this project down the road and deliver a Trek that we can all get behind. Right now I'm pretty curious to know if they will bring back anyone else from Next Generation, but I'm guessing not, as Stewart's salary alone must be a fat check.

He's probably not cheap these days, no

That said, I find Stewart is pretty good at picking projects - and he comes across as a guy with some integrity. So, maybe he got a good look at the script or - at least - the concept before signing up.

We can always hope. But I'll be very pleasantly surprised if it's above average.

It was never cancelled. After checking the wiki, it seems they took 2 years between each season. So that's why I most likely dropped off before the third one.

I personally loved the first 2 seasons. Weird, but good. I prefer shows like that, to most of the generic stuff you usually see. At least it was taking risks.

Checked out a few more BBC America series & mini-series because of my recent crush-obsession with UK actress Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) but was disappointed with most of what I saw though Jodie made the material watchable. The list:

1. The White Princess - historical romance novel translated to costume period drama with slightly wacky dramatic license taken with history that annoyed me but, hey, Jodie was wonderful.

2. Remember Me - ghost-themed mini-series in the style of modern M.R. James' BBC adaptations (Whistle and I'll Come To You). Michael Palin had the male lead. He's always been a favorite but in other genres of course. Jodie was okay.

3. Thirteen - another BBC mini-series but it was like a fucking 5 hour Lifetime (Television for Women and Women-like Men) movie-of-the week complete with kidnapped girl falling for her abductor and a happy happy ending but a little better than typical Lifetime shite because it had explosions and fire and feisty chicks (Jodie) smashing bad guys in the face with fists, and it was british actors (the best in the world, imo) so I approve. Jodie was fantastic. Worth watching.

4. Doctor Foster - No, no, no. Just… no. Soap opera mixed with medical "sickness of the week" drama. I lasted 1 and a half eps before I wanted to cry help, and gave up. Even Jodie as "the other woman" couldn't save it tho I did get to see her in short shorts and a sports bra during her medical examination, so there's that.

5. Please don't judge me and my uber-crush on Jodie Comer.

I haven't watched ST: Discovery but I'm almost surprised it gets such bad reviews since Bryan Fuller has done some interesting and unique stuff in the past, along with some interesting and unique stuff in an incredibly bad way too, ie American Gods, the first network TV series to show fantasy themed gay-porn (homo-sex with jinns!) and erect penises in selfies. So maybe I shouldn't be almost surprised

Good news for Star Trek fans as Patrick Stewart’s is returning for a new TV series.

CBS announced Saturday that Patrick Stewart will reprise his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new "Star Trek" series. It will be streamed on CBS All Access.

The still-unnamed series will explore the "next chapter" of Picard's life.

Stewart played the Enterprise captain in the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-94), and in several feature films. He last appeared in the role in the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002. Stewart, who will also be an executive producer of the show, described it is an "unexpected but delightful surprise" to reprise the role after, he thought, it had "run its natural course."

He said it has been "humbling" to hear from fans about how Picard has helped and inspired them.

"I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times," Stewart said in a statement. "I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more."

Yeah, Stewart's return to the role has been quite the talk in my area. It will be quite a while before the project fleshes out, but I'm hopeful.

One of the best shows of all comes back tonight, Better Call Saul. Now, that's a show worth watching!!

Thx for the reminder. Man o man, I love this series. Has a sad deterministic quality about it since we already know the final fate of many of the characters in the Saulverse, except, ironically, Saul.

Yup, Saul is the real deal if you want bat-shit entertainment at it's uttermost battiest!

I'm also curious about the Lodge show that is on afterwards, I'll be checking that one out also.

Ófærð (Trapped). Icelandic crime drama/thriller. It was decent but not great. It's very realistic and nothing is over-the-top stupid (which is rare in a crime series), all the characters feels like real humans. It was incredibly hard for me to keep track of character names, and since it's about investigations and crime there's a lot of talk about various characters with absolutely impossible names to remember. Lots of heart, but the plot is very simplistic. weak 7/10

Saul got off to an excellent start last night, dark and dreary, and superb!!! The final minute was mesmerizing.

For me it was easy. Got trained with all sorts of neverheardbefore names in asian soaps I guess.

If I never mentioned, just to add, I recommend bingewatching Trapped as soon as possible.

Hard not to love that guy.

The letter he's talking about is the very essence of "true Trek" - if you ask me. I truly, truly hope against hope that his return to the role will represent something worthy of true Trek - but I just can't really believe it.

But I don't think there's ever been a better time for modern Civilization to learn from true Trek.

I really need to get around to checking that out.

I absolutely loved Breaking Bad, and Saul Goodman was one of my favorite characters on that show.

It seems like I never get around to watching tv though nowadays. I still haven't even finished Season 2 of Westworld yet or started the newest season of Preacher.

About 4 or 5 eps into the Alienist and enjoying it. Whilst I've said I was weary of serial killer shows this one is a little more interesting for the setting.

Vurt's comments above made me think of a show that I would recommend to anyone, The Bridge, Danish/Swedish cop drama. The original, not the US version.

The Alienist is one of the few shows I did watch this past season. It gets better as the season goes on, and I thought it was pretty good overall. Daniel Brühl was particularly strong in his role.

Carr's books are excellent, I've read and reread them a few times. I did check out the first two episodes of the show, but it didn't grab me yet. I'll watch a few more of the Alienist and see if it approaches what the novels delivered.
