The latest Fallout: New Vegas marketing effort involves releasing the rules to one of the card games you can play within the game, so you can play it in advance. From IGN:
Those that follow Fallout closely would have noticed back in May that the collector's edition of Fallout: New Vegas comes with, amongst other things, a customized deck of cards to play Caravan, a mini-game for gambling found within New Vegas. Well, you don't have to wait until October when New Vegas releases to start playing. The developers have provided us with the complete rule set so you can play on your own with a normal deck of cards and a friend.

Once Fallout: New Vegas launches, you'll be able to play Caravan in the game to win some virtual caps. Bethesda and Obsidian are also planning to launch a Flash version shortly for those that don't like to use real cards.
More information.

I'm really looking forward to this game. As a former casino dealer, and an avid gambler, I'm interested in seeing how all the different gambling mini-games are going to work.

October is going to be a great month for crpgs, but Arcania and Two Worlds 2 are going to have to wait. FO:NV is definitely 1st on my list.

As a current dealer, I'll be quite interested to see it all works, as well. Hopefully they will have some skill-based games like poker in there as well.

Apart from all that, I think this one looks like being awesome. It's currently my most anticipated game by a long way.

Ah crap - I hate card/gambling mini-games. (the exception being poker dice in TW2, but that's only because I like poker dice…) Is this purely optional, or, being Vegas, will you be required to gamble to save your hide or something? I hope not. Also, what's the story? I've haven't really being following things, but it sounds like a new area - Vegas - and.. what? Pointless running around doing things for some local crime lord? FO3 had a primary driving quest - get the GECK - what's the goal here? Will it be interesting?
Lastly, this isn't an expansion right? So it won't import old ave games or have anything to do with the original FO3?

Fallout never required you to gamble. FO:NV only exchanges the unbalanced, skill-based gambling of FO1 and 2 with a mini-game. You will do it to get cash, but you still have different possibilities to get it.

Also, what's the story? I've haven't really being following things, but it sounds like a new area - Vegas - and.. what? Pointless running around doing things for some local crime lord?

You are being dugged up by a robot after getting shot. A doctor patches you up and you try to find out who tried to kill you. Probably this will only be the first character motivation. I speculate that the tower in the central of NV and the powers that rule there are the main objective. Obsidian tries to reintegrate things that were missing from FO3 and are essential to the FO legacy back into the game, even some NPCs.

FO3 had a primary driving quest - get the GECK - what's the goal here? Will it be interesting?

In FO3 you had to find your father. The GECK was the McGuffin in FO2.

Lastly, this isn't an expansion right? So it won't import old ave games or have anything to do with the original FO3?

There is no "original FO3". NV will take you back to the West Coast and takes place years after FO3. So, no importing.

@Sir_brenuus - ah, ok thanks for the info. As for the GECK...knew I'd seen it somewhere! The whole 'finding dad' thing wasn't a great motivator for me... I hope there's something a bit more gripping this time. Still, I'll start paying attention now.

FO3 also had you find a Geck. I am currently replaying it, and it feels more like a relaunch than a sequel. Apart from finding your father, the plot blatantly recycles elements of the older games and mixes them together. A plot about water, finding the GECK, fighting the Enclave, the FEV virus... This also makes the main plot feel very unfocused. I think many here agree that it's one of FO3's weakest points.

However, there is one mod that makes the main plot more motivating. It's called "Survival of the Fittest" and introduces different types of injuries as well as hunger and thirst. Instead of healing you, food and water are simply there to keep you alive. Having to drink, in combination with the deadly radiation mod, makes the main quest much more urgent and meaningful.

At the Games Com, the inside of the Fallout-related Bethesda booth indeed looked like a small casino.

And labels at the front were strictly forbidding photographs or films.
I'm surprised that eyes were allowed.
