What are your favourite sequels to games?

For me it would have to be

Ultima III, and IV
NWN1 as the successor to AOL NWN
BG2
IWD as a spinoff off the BG which I didn't find that great
IWD2
Skyrim

It has to be Baldurs Gate II for me. For reasons I've bored people about elsewhere on this forum. :) but basically its awesome.

More recently, Legend of Grimrock II was a great example of how to expand and improve on a game whilst keeping the same basic concept.

Fallout 3 (music by the Inkspots and other relevant music; Vault atmosphere; and crazed surrounding wastelands), then FNV and FO4 as followups there

Skyrim -- definitely outdid their earlier works in many aspects...

And meanwhile... I was still thinking...

__

C&C Red Alert (as a prequel to the Tiberium stuff)
Tomb Raider 2
Mass Effect 2
The Witcher 2
Might & Magic VII (as the same engine sequel to VI)
Morrowind
Rainbow Six Rogue Spear
Assassin's Creed 2
Batman Arkham City
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Drakensang The River of Time
I.G.I 2 Covert Strike
Privateer 2 The Darkening

... and many more I probably forgot or have yet to play :)

Lol I would list pretty much all my favourite games here.

Baldur's Gate 2 (if I have to choose one, BG2 takes the crown)
Icewind Dale as a spin off to BG
Neverwinter Nights 1 (this is both disappointing and favourite at the same time)
The Witcher 3
Stardew Valley (if it can be called Harvest Moons successor)
Mass Effect 2

MMIII
MMVI
DE:HR
Skyrim
Ego Draconis miles better than the OS shit.
Ultima IV
Fallout 3

F:NV as a much more enjoyable experience to me than FO3.
BG2
Morrowind
SR: DF (as a sequel to DMS)
NWN2 Motb (I enjoyed the original campaign too though)
Wasteland 2 DC
Tie Fighter (Still my favourite Space combat sim of all time)
GTA: SA (Sequel to GTA3)
Homm3

And probably loads of other games. But if I could only pick one?

Damn…I'd probably pick XCOM, not because it's as good as the originals in my opinion, but because it put turn based combat back on the mainstream AAA map.

Edit: Honourable mentions to Fallout 2 which I apparently forgot to mention.

BTW, why is this in General RPG? :)

Ha, I thought the opposite, why is the most disappointing in Off-topic. But I guess that since we don't limit the discussing to RPG's that makes sense. Maybe.

Yeah, I don't think non-RPG topics belong in RPG sections - but it's not exactly a big deal :)

As for the non-RPG section, I personally think it should be reserved for specific games - and not random musing threads like the ones I've created in off-topic. That said, off-topic isn't the ideal place, either. Perhaps we need a "non-specific games" thread? :)

But again, in the grand scheme of things - it's a pretty tiny issue!

Yeah, a general game discussion forum perhaps. On the other hand we aren't that many regular posters, to have a sub-forum for everything would be a bit much.

TW3.
Sure it's not the only sequel I adore, but since the title says "the most favorite", I suppose the question is to name one so there you go.

MM7, BG2, Gothic 2 and TW3 are the obvious ones for me, at least among RPGs.

Among non-RPGs, a few worthy mentions are Warcraft III, Civ II, Monkey Island 2-3, Space Quest 5-6 and Leisure Suit Larry 6-7. I'm sure there are more as well (Super Mario 3, World, etc).

If I had to pick a single one, it would be Gothic 2. I was incredibly hyped at the time, and it actually delivered, despite my through-the-roof expectations. That is a rare thing indeed.

I never played Gothic 1 but I absolutely loved the freedom of Gothic 2.

Zelda BotW is second only because i felt a similar freedom in Gothic 2 in the past.
