Hardly. You may not have noticed, but we've had both types of games for years, probably as long as we've had smartphones. Nothing new here.

Yes there were such games for years, but those were never advertised separately before!

Not at all - it is a very smart way to get a separate stream of promotion and revenue. There is a broad in-app backlash, so they can leverage that and make money, and since basic 'freemium' phone-games continue to go strong they can promote those separately.

Personally I like it if for no other reason than it separates the 'whole' games so they don't get so buried in 'free to play' stuff.
