I've seen a thread around here about old computer equipment. Why not stereo gear? Maybe because lots of people don't have stereos anymore? Quiet, you. That's precisely the point.

Naturally, I'll start. Not too long ago, I acquired a reel-to-reel tape deck. I used to have another one years ago. Not sure what came of it. My first wife probably sold it for a stupidly low price like $40 in the firesale that was our divorce. When I got the new one, it was a bit like an old friend stepping back into my life.

Without further ado, the Akai 4000DS…

Ridiculously, the tape in that photo was recorded from digital, and the deck itself is hooked up to Bluetooth speakers.

So, we have our fair share of old timers around here. While clearly inferior to an open-reel tape deck, some of you must have old turntables. :p

Yeah, mine's just a home deck, 7 1/2 IPS on 7" reels. I don't have a real reason for it, like recording my own music -- or the money to burn -- but a real recording deck, 15 IPS on 10" reels, would be a lot of fun to play around with.

I picked up an old valve radio. It's stored away in the loft, but it looks a lot like this.

I'm hoping to restore it, and try to rewire it to play from modern inputs. Or otherwise to create a very loud bang, which wouldn't be the first time.

Nice radio. Not sure how I could forget my radio...maybe because I just think of it as a nightstand, which is what I use it for. It's from the 1940s, and trying to fix it hasn't even crossed my mind yet...

That's a beauty. I'd love to see that restored to action.

I have one of these that I use for 78 rpm records

without the strange thing underneath
and without external hinges
perhaps I only have the vanilla version although I have upgraded the tubes with the help of a friend who actually knew what he was doing

I’ve got a really good, rather old turntable too, but it is wrapped in bubble plastic in a box on the attic.

Yes, the radio works. Nothing wrong with it. :)
Same goes for the turntable btw, when it is out if the bubble plastic. :)

Oh, I’ve got one of those too. With broken strings though. On the attic. In a box. :)
Belonged to my granddad.

You know, I thought for sure someone would break out some pics of one of those kickass old stereo systems with the giant silver knobs that are so pleasantly smooth to turn... :p
