Only joxer would think The Outer Worlds was superb. :)

If it has as good as modding as Skyrim, I'm all in.

Don't get your hopes up. I expect they're using Unreal 4 since they're already familiar with that engine. That's what they used for ToW, and it was barely moddable at all. That's one of the reasons I'm not overly hyped about this.

I haven't played the Outer Worlds yet, but I'm in general positive about Obsidian, and this might convince me to give Microsoft game pass as chance, since there are a number of games I wouldn't pay 60 euros for, but would like to play.
I would have prefered another party based game, like many others here. But I like to give such first person action rpgs a spin once in a while if they've recieved a positive reception.

I concur it looks like the Unreal engine again and it's notorious for not being easy to mod. Not saying it can't be done it's just a pain in the butt to get them to work.

Also as an update Josh Sawyer confirmed on Twitter he isn't involved at all. So all those who hated his changes to every class in PoE updates, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

The codex mentioned someone named John is project lead this time.

I don't think it's a matter of money, but of talent. I don't think Obsidian can deliver, because they struggle not with the graphics, effects or character animations, but with the writing and design of their characters and story arcs and the implementation of mechanics that feel fun and engaging. And that comes from someone that has invested more hours than it's healthy in both PoE games.

Now if that money is invested into hiring a better creative team, then we're talking, but it takes courage to admit that's what you need in order to improve what you have been offering for the last decade.
I think it has less to do with talent and more to do with telling stories in games in general. Most book authors have (almost) total creative control, can take many years to write one book, and still most books are mediocre to good. To write engaging stories as a team and with the limitations of technology and sudden changes due to unexpected problems, must be really, really hard.

I don't think I've experienced more than a handful of stories in computer games that were better than average compared to books.
You are putting your human emotions in statistics because for whatever reason it rubs you wrong that RPG players attract a more intellectual crowd in average than sport game players, same as people who make a hobby out of playing chess are an averagely more intellectual crowd than those who make a hobby out of throwing firecrackers at stray dogs. Humility, or lack of thereof, is not a factor here, whether you like it or not.
Where are your statistics? Citation needed. ;)

Corporate environment is oriented on growth from above, meaning through buying (investing-in) suitable subjects. Corporates completely lack positive motivation for already assimilated subjects. That is main reason why companies diminish over time in corporate structures. Obsidian will be no exception. If they are lucky, they will be able to produce game that sells really well, before the initial money stream from MS dries out. That will allow Obsidian to exist till the product is milked out and squeezed to death. The end.

Come on, it's 2020. Google it. I do like skeptical people to a degree, the world would be a better place if people questioned and tested things instead of believing them. That said, this seems like an obvious thing to me, but then again, some people won't even believe that the Earth is spherical, so there is that.

Always sad to watch a beloved developer from your youth become a shell of what it was once. BioWare is a good example. I dread the day CD Project suffers the same fate.:(

I ask only because as far as I know, they've only researched IQ in top players in a few competitive moba and fps games:

I've also seen studies about top football (soccer) players as well having really good cognitive abilities. Not in fluid intelligence, but more specific to their position on the field.

Never saw one about RPGs, but maybe you have?

People who scream at those players and fight other people in the street because they wear a different team shirt in average will be less interested on reading books or playing deep games than people who are subscribed to science channels.

Now, John the hooligan, may be a bookstore clerk that loves cultivating his mind after a good post-match brawl, while Ned the Nerd might prefer to browse porn when he's done with his chess games, but we're talking about averages, and also not about how intelligent each person is, only about their interests and what they want from life. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of studies that relate, not so sure one specific about RPGs (ie, games with deep thought, complicated systems, and lots of reading) vs sport games (ie, gather with friends, square to shoot, circle to pass, have fun in an easy, non-engaging way), but both you and me know this is how it is.
 
From my personal experiences, i don't prefer to play with the straightforward intelligent people in RPG's but the one's that are the most socially aware and responsive. Trust me, intelligence means nothing when it comes to social behaviour!
And good social behaviour is a corner stone of Multiplayer or Table Top RPG'ing...

Honestly, I never even implied that RPG players are more intelligent. Only more attracted towards intellectual topics, which was an obvious thing to say, really. Intelligence can be used not only to understand RPGs and read walls of text, it can also be used to get away with a crime, for example. Being intelligent and having intellectual interests while indirectly related, are two different things, and I never said that people who plays sport games are dumber than people who play RPGs, only that they have different interests and priorities, which is neither better or worse, but it was relevant in the post where I mentioned it because we were talking about why it is so hard to please RPG fans with new games, while FIFA fans are happy to just have their player names updated to the current season.

Yeah, sorry about misreading intellectual/intelligent. However, the same rule applies: We might believe certain subgroups of players like certain things on average. That's not statistics however, unless it's been investigated.

So on-topic, then: I found the message in the trailer pretty "meh". Oath, weight of crown/responsibility. Didn't really make me curious. And the arrow flying forever was weird.

If I was a betting man, I would say obsidion went to MS and gave them their idea on this game, and with Obsidion needing more cash and their track record as well as MS trying to develop first party developers they became good dance partners. It seems microsoft has really changed direction on how they want to handle first party devs, went out and grabbed a bunch of unique talented people. I have high hopes for this....
