I've been playing a lot of older JRPG's over the past 2 years, like Grandia, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, etc. Would you say Tears of Avia is similar to these games, or would you compare it to something else?

No, this is a tactical RPG. In combat, a tactical combat grid opens and each character moves/attacks does something. It's more similar to games like Disgaea or Agarest.
