Good now they can start copying the 4 physical copies they’ll sell.

Honestly in this digital age just release the game digitally and those that must have a physical copy can wait. No need for “gone gold” anymore

Consoles are where the physical editions are sold not the PC probably a few million not four copies. So if the game only sells four physical copies I'll eat crow, but it wont.

Collector physical editions are also consoles biggest sellers. Not on the PC. Anyway gone gold basically means the game is finished and awaiting the obvious day one patch.

Now if only the 3TB SSD's would drop under $400.

I know, and 4 was a joke obviously. I more meant to imply it’s time to let go of physical copies and embrace digital.

Gone Gold means the games finished and ready to be duplicate on whatever media it’s released on. Unless you were just giving me your definition.

Console makers have been trying to get rid of physical for quite a while. Remember the shitstorm when Microsoft wanted to go digital? Now sony has an all digital version of PS5. I’m guessing one more generation and physical will be gone. Collector editions will just come with crap and a game code.

This is coming from someone that hates to see physical go and will miss my bookshelves full of game boxes and gameguides , but all good things must come to an end I guess.

If devs can make some money from limited collector editions they probably will continue. Although there likely will be fewer of those.

Yep the definition and meaning has changed since it was first used.

I'm used to it already as PC collector editions never contain the physical media anymore.

Still remember buying a boxed game years ago and only getting a piece of paper with the steam key. I was like "What the hell were's the damn game". It was hilarious.

Also don't forget they want to kill the used game market that's always been their goal.

I wish that Collector's Editions were simply nicely-bound books, containing a proper manual, maps, bestiary, art, etc. I'd actually be happy to pay a sensible amount for that, but not $200 for some silly collection of tat.

It still wouldn't release now. The bug fixing that is going into the day one patch is an essential part of its final release state.

I actually buy the collectors edition game guides. They’re hardcover and usually have some good information about classes, races and game mechanics before getting into the walkthrough. ( At least they do at release but after 16 balancing patches they can be hit or miss.) and their useful if your a completionist like me. They sometimes also go up in value I’ve seen a number of mine on eBay or amazon for over $100 because they’re out of print.

Obviously not every game gets a game 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚 though.

Well, I always go on about this, but I really miss the reading of the printed manual for an RPG (and other games, too). To me, the manual is something like an artifact that's a part of the game, as opposed to a strategy guide, which is sort of apart from it, if you see what I mean. I would just enjoy a detailed old-school manual with monsters, spells and tables, maps and art, and so on. All bound up in a nicely printed book. Lovely. I'd pay a premium for that.

CDPR Defends Crunch, People Have An “Ideological Narrative” - Game Infinitus
Recently CD Projekt Red was outed as one of the developers who were forcing mandatory crunch on their employees, and this hasn’t gone well with others.

Cyberpunk 2077 has already been delayed two times, from April to September, and then to November. The game recently went gold which assured that it will meet the November 19 launch date, but the news about mandatory crunch led to some controversy regarding the developer who had stated in the past that they try to reduce the crunch during game development.

I think you have to look at every case individually. Every job I've ever done involved "crunch" from time to time - late nights and a hectic few weeks. On the other hand, I've no doubt that some game studios completely take the piss and run people into the ground. Hard to know what the culture is really like from the outside.

Back in the 90's I used to get so excited when a game went gold. There was a website Gone Gold if I remember.

Reading the manual on my bus ride home from buying the game was an intrinsic part of buying new games for me. I remember those fat Microprose manuals, for example, and the keyboad overlays. Or the "Feelies" in Infocom games. It was the perfect mood setter, making me even more excited to delve in when I got home. I did miss that for many years. I probably still do, but it's been so long that I don't think about it now.

Interesting take from those videos is CDPR was considering delaying the game again.

Why is CDPR taking so much flak for this "crunch time" stuff.

My Dad used to work at ford and had mandatory overtime. I worked at a restaurant and had mandatory overtime and mandatory 50 hour weeks after I became salary ( so no extra compensation). I now own my own construction business and when a deadline is tight weekends and late days are mandatory. My brother works for bestbuy, when they roll out new stores he has to work extra hours and my other brother works at a casino and is required to work extra hours when they have tournaments.

My point is this happens in every industry, So why the outrage?

P.S. I didn't watch the whole video.

No problem as both share the same info.
  1. CDPR Employees both hate/support crunch.
  2. Witcher III's crunch was not a good experience.
  3. CDPR Promised no more crunch after Witcher III.
  4. CDPR wanted to delay the game again.
  5. CDPR employees are being paid well for crunch.
  6. Game Journalists with different perspectives.
  7. Jason Schreier is hated by his fellow Journalists.
