Age of Decadence - Review

Ok. I just finished a replay of Fallout, and thanks to this thread I'm going to have a run at Age of Decadence before Avernum 3 comes out. I've rolled myself an axe wielding mercenary and I'm about to get stuck in :)

Edit: this game really is brutal. I hate the guys with spears in particular. Their push-back skill is maddening. It's good fun though. And next time I'm definitely killing them…

Let me know if you need any tips... I haven't played in a year but I had gotten really. Into it when I did play.

One of the arena fights is against my old character

Yeah I've been thinking of re-rolling with a spear character just for that attack of opportunity and push back when entering aggro range. It's pretty devastating. I'll stick with the axe for a bit just now though.

Having attack of opportunity is almost a necessity, if you don't want to be swearing at your computer all day. The axe isn't a bad choice though, stick with it and you'll see benefits.

The axe is much better against strong foes later in the game. The extra damage is crazy...

Pongo, make sure to use crafting, it's a game-changer.

I'm just re-rolling actually, so I'll add some crafting. I'd spread my previous character too thin. This time I'm focussing on axe and dodge (rather than block) and I'm going to try two handing. And not investing so many points in conversation skills (and lockpick, which I never used…). Going to keep a few points in Streetwise though.

Really enjoying the game, can't believe it's taken me so long to get round to it.

Yes, for your first game I'd recommend to focus on key skills.
If you go axe and dodge, be careful with armour, it's worth having one suit of heavy armour and one light armour. Some combats the dodge outweighs the armour, some fights, the armour will be too useful to not have.

I would recommend crafting as your main non-combat skill if you are planning to go into lots of combats.
Playing this game as a hybrid character is very difficult (i.e. combat and talker) as you end up with very few points in everything. Specialisation makes the game easier, but you tend to not be able to see many of the secret areas.

This game is tough but not especially memorable, and as far as being enjoyable- less so.

You will definitely waste a lot of time without character optimization around one, maybe two, key skillsets, maximum. To that end character creation guides were a must-read to get going properly.

I made…essentially a Charismatic, Intelligent craftsman/alchemist who wore heavy armor, a tower shield, and was passable with a spear.

The rest of the game was poking people back in narrow confines with a stick, when talking failed. It was boring. Very boring. The text descriptions were fine. The storyline was vaguely interesting. I ended up "beating the alien entity" and becoming immortal, or something.

It all felt like a dull, grey, drab, long and endless (and pointless) errand. There was nothing "lively" about the game, or epic about the few world-changes that your (positive) actions affected, and the locales felt colorless and static. The characters, too - this was less about the actual graphics and animations (poor as they were) than simply boring, stale characterization and crating of motive. You help some slightly less uncivil types kill other groups, or maybe you kill them all, and the world still a shitty and terrible place. Why were fanboys so eager to defend this sort of uninspired drivel?

If that was Vince D. Weller's intention, he certainly succeeded: he crafted a story that slogging through felt worthwhile - barely - only once.

You want post-apocalyptic RPG gems? Well, compared to the original Deus Ex, or Wasteland 2, or Fallout 2, or Underail - it simply isn't fun.
