Some mixed scores here and there, but the media loves Obsidian, so I'm sure it'll do pretty well. It's a shame that Greedfall didn't get the same recognition.

Conspiracy alert! There's no way Outer Worlds could be a good game or anything!

Greedfall got quite a lot of recognition. Plenty of reviews, with a scored average around 80. And while I like Greedfall overall, let's not pretend it's some amazing game.

PC Invasion:

In terms of actual gameplay, The Outer Worlds… well, it’s basically Bethesda’s Fallout, but the open world has been replaced with a host of smaller maps. No, really. If you’ve played Fallout 3, 4, or Obsidian’s own New Vegas, the gameplay will feel startlingly familiar. That’s true right down to having hundreds of things to pick up and then try to organize while struggling with a really, really irritating inventory UI. You even hold down Reload to holster your weapon.

An enjoyable adventure, but one that hews a little too close to its FPS Fallout roots.

7/10
FPS Fallout roots are CTD every 10 minutes plus other numerous bugs.
Somehow I don't think OW does that.

Pretty unbuggy experience for me in New Vegas.
That 7/10 for being like that game = 20/10 for me.

I'm frustrated that they went with the satirical "LOLnuclear" lolol theme of Fallout. That crap has been played out way, way too much. I wish they had gone with something like Flash Gordon, 1930s style but modern, or something else.

I got bored of Greedfall pretty quickly and didn't finish it.

Satirical Nuclear theme where? In Outer Worlds? From all the interviews I've seen, the humor is very dark in OW.

Regardless, Fallout wasn't originally like that; Tim was primarily only responsible for Fallout 1 - and it was anything but lolol. That was primarily Bethesda's doing (though the team that took over for #2 at Black Isle didn't help).

Not the same genre (more action-rpg really, and even then…) but The Deadly Tower of Monsters does the whole 50's/Flash Gordon thing pretty well. It's basically designed to be/play like a B-movie Sci Fi experience with plenty of call backs to Forbidden Planet and the like (and Flash Gordon). Plus a bit of Buck Rogers too.

Keep in mind that being Epic exclusive will negatively impact reviews on the game too. I have a couple friends who tell me Borderlands 3 is the best of all the Borderlands games released, and I think it's got around 5/10 user score in Metacritic.

In any case, some of those sites seem to evaluate as a negative that The Outer Worlds isn't much of a FPS, and to me that's the greatest game-related news I've had in all week. I'm interested n a RPG with shooter elements, not the other way around.

Yeah, this is one of those games where I'm inclined to trust the critic scores more than the user scores because I know there will be a bunch of idiots bombing it for no other reason than being sold on Epic.

The game looks and feels like it's made with Gamebryo, Skyrim's and Fallout 4's engine.

I was about to skip this game, but those scores made me curious about it. Although I prefer more "serious" game's, this one looks too much satyrical, humorous, goofy for my taste.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy. I like Obsidian's games myself and New Vegas is one of my favorite RPGs ever, so I'll probably enjoy this one. Just commenting that the media is clearly more positive for games made by certain companies like Obsidian, Bioware and Bethesda. Greedfall may not be perfect, but its reception wasn't so fair either.

I'm genuinely curious: what do you think was unfair about it? It was Spiders' best reviewed game by a fair margin, showing that past preconceptions about their games didn't doom them to low scores. And most major online reviewers covered it. I don't see what was unfair about it. The media has also been positive about games like Disco Elysium, from a tiny Estonian company that had never made a game before, and negative about recent releases like Anthem, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Fallout 76, by those companies you claim get preferential treatment. Just doesn't seem to add up.

Good scores, so at least it seems Obsidian has much tighter quality control now. Already PoE2 had decent release, from "technical state" point of view. Glad they are leaving this dark side in the past. Well, good luck with the sales! (Not helping myself though, too many other games to play … and Im still not broken to touch Epic).

I'll definitely be skipping this. From the bad and too cartoony and colorful graphics, to the recycled historical old time America aura/setting (yawn), to the boringly politically correct premise of "super-evil" corporations exploiting everyone (more yawning), this game is a sure miss for me. Hopefully they will do a more interesting game next time.

I'm not quite sure what feel you got there. In prerelease Materials I didn't see evil corporations behaving differently only because coming from from capitalism or socialism yet always evil. Instead of that, I see colonization. Was colonization historically evil? Was it politically correct? Can statements about it be politically correct as we can't pretend history didn't happen?

Then you say old time America… Sorry, I have no clue about american history except that there were gangsters (and maybe still are) so if something else that's not gangsters is in, it's fresh to me. It still leaves a question do they use pencil or pen to write while in space.

Cartoony graphics is fine with me, but if hair is plastic and artificial as was in early videos, well… I won't be happy.

All that aside, PCG has an additional featured comment input on the game performance on PC added to their review:
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-outer-worlds-review/
In terms of performance, right now AMD GPUs are slower than their Nvidia equivalents. For 1080p low, the GTX 1650 and RX 570 both average around 75-80 fps. For 1080p ultra, GTX 1060 6GB, RX Vega 56, or GTX 1660 should get you 60fps. for 1440p ultra, you'll need RX 5700 XT / Radeon VII or an RTX 2060 for 60fps. And if you want 4K ultra at 60 fps, only the RTX 2080 Ti will suffice. (Yes, even the 2080 Super fails to break 60 fps.)

Compared to the Ultra preset, performance improvements from the other presets are:
Very High: 6~8 percent faster
High: ~28 percent faster
Medium: 40~45 percent faster
Low: ~52 percent faster

For the individual settings:
Screen Effects Low: 8~10 percent improvement
View Distance Low: ~1-3 percent improvement (with a fast CPU)
Shadows Low: 20~22 percent improvement
Textures Low: ~3 percent improvement (on 8GB VRAM cards)
Visual Effects Low: 5~7 percent improvement
I wish they, or someone else, did a similar info on every game reviewed. Not only this is a very useable input depending on the rig you're using, unlike a review it can't be subjective.

What I mean by old time\America is the architecture and design of the game world. They are obviously going for some 1930s art deco style, kinda like those Dishonored games. I just happen to hate that style and architecture, and it makes no sense to be in a game where it is supposed to be futuristic. You'd think they would have been able to come up with something new and that fit the setting better.

The graphics and visuals are pretty bad just in general though, here is what a review that otherwise was glowing about the game said:
https://www.rpgsite.net/review/9110-…-worlds-review

"Despite all the good there is in The Outer Worlds (and that’s a lot), there is an elephant in the room- the presentation. There’s just no escaping it, The Outer Worlds is not a well-presented game. Character models are all underwhelming, textures are unpolished and the sound design is okay at best and flat at worst.

This is a big shame because artistically The Outer Worlds actually has some great ideas, it’s just let down by lacklustre visuals. It’s like a Range Rover being powered by a Reliant Robin. Just take a look at the loading screen artworks for an idea of what The Outer Worlds wants to achieve. Saying that, in my playthrough I actually didn’t run into any substantial bugs. There were some occasional UI glitches, but nothing that made quitting out of the game essential and nothing that detracted too much from the overall experience. Considering how buggy some of Obsidian’s previous releases have been, this was a nice surprise.

There are some other smaller areas that The Outer Worlds doesn’t quite deliver on as well. The lack of a third person camera is disappointing and makes customisation almost entirely pointless. The range of armours and weapons are also pretty bare, which is a little confusing considering the game’s focus on branding, although that is somewhat made up for by the obscene amount of consumables that can be collected.

The presentation being lacklustre should in no way be a dealbreaker though. Obsidian have crafted a smart, witty, deep RPG experience…"

Back to my opinion --- About the colonization thing - that is far more interesting a topic than "corporations are evil!" in my opinion. But I don't think the game is really about that, just based on trailers and reviews I have seen. It seems mostly semi-humorous take on evil corporations exploiting people, which I find very boring…I find any game involving corporations as a focus or theme pretty boring, to be honest.

It doesn't look anything like the Dishonored games. If there's a comparison to be made, it would be to BioShock.

And whether or not the visuals are bad is completely subjective. Personally, I like the art style quite a bit.
