I smell a... wumpus!?
First, nearly all the mods require Unity Mod Manager. Without it, you'll just be getting portraits.
Top of the list has to be the Turn Based mod - see the whole topic on that mod elsewhere. This mod is also really good for teaching you how combat works.

If you get into a tussle north-east of something large, they game will show your characters in blue x-ray but there's really no reason for that. This game is actually fully 3D! Use this mod plus , and . to rotate the camera around. Use / to get back to the home position.

If the current character can learn a scroll, that scroll gets a green highlight. You can select any character in your party when you're at a store, too, so you can see if there's a scroll for sale that the character can learn. (The character DOES have to be in your party, though. Also, just because you can learn a scroll doesn't mean you can cast it yet.) Also highlights recipes.

This game puts a ton of locations to visit on the map with nary a hint about what level you need to be. It will keep track of whether you went there or not, too, but that's it. You can't tell the difference between a place you wiped clean and one you immediately ran from! With this mod, you can add notes to each areas' description to remind yourself what's in there. You can even put markers on the individual area maps if you want to go back and unlock some things you didn't get the first time. It is a little confusing to use so don't blow off the instructions.
