I find it amusing someone can't wrap there head around the concept that people might enjoy companion interactions with a romance or best friend type option simply for the enjoyment of it ... and seems to feel only desperate gamers with a failed love life would enjoy such things. That implies that the reason anyone likes any specific aspect or option or mechanic in a game is because they are desperate for such an aspect/option/mechanic and is a failure because they don't have it.
People like different things in game. I consider it immersive to have companions in games that react to what you do, like you, dislike you, love you, hate you, etc., What I tend to find unimmersive in a game are pack-mule characters that might as well be zombies due to zero personality or background.
