Default Dr H Edward Roberts, inventor of the PC, dead at 68

This news is about three weeks old now but if you are staring at a monitor attached to a computer smaller than a room this is pretty important.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/03/bu…03roberts.html

Its unfortunate it got lost among all the iPad gush (even Steven Levy of Wired, who did an extensive history of the Altair in his 1983 book Hackers, chose to yap about the iPad over Dr Roberts).

Gates and Allen, who owe their careers to Roberts, have had a long running feud with him but decided to bury when they heard Roberts was on his deathbed with pneumonia

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and early mentor, Ed Roberts, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Ed was truly a pioneer in the personal computer revolution, and didn’t always get the recognition he deserved. He was an intense man with a great sense of humor, and he always cared deeply about the people who worked for him, including us. Ed was willing to take a chance on us – two young guys interested in computers long before they were commonplace – and we have always been grateful to him. The day our first untested software worked on his Altair was the start of a lot of great things. We will always have many fond memories of working with Ed in Albuquerque, in the MITS office right on Route 66 – where so many exciting things happened that none of us could have imagined back then.

More than anything, what we will always remember about Ed was how deeply compassionate he was – and that was never more true than when he decided to spend the second half of his life going to medical school and working as a country doctor making house calls. He will be missed by many and we were lucky to have known him.
Steve Wozniak, creator of the first good and useful PC, said in an email,

“He took a critically important step that led to everything we have today,” Wozniak said in an e-mail.

Let's hope someone similar saves us from Steve Jobs, in his attempt to lock-down another hardware platform (tablets).

I don't think we need a savior for that. Apple's walled garden approach has some really major advantages, but also major drawbacks. My guess is that that market will be split between Apple and Android, with Apple users thinking of tablets as appliances, and Android users thinking of them as computers.

As for me, I just ordered a Kindle.

Well, maybe it's already started? Apple just recently rejected an app that "ridiculed public figures". Apparently the creator was a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist and word got around in the press. So now, of course, Apple called him up and asked him to resubmit his app. He's a big Apple fan, so he's probably just going to resubmit and case closed.
