A Call for the End of Abbrevs

What I hate is when somebody posts a link to something that is not related at all to the topic. What does SWTOR have to do with the abbreviations we use at RPGWatch? Nobody with living brain cells will follow a link to Drakensang or SWTOR threads.

https://professionalmoron.com/2013/04/25/how-to-be-an-irritating-social-media-presence/

In fact it was an example of how a list of explained abbreviations could look like.
People already had the idea there to compile such a list, provided by players.

I could have linked to any other list of explaned abbreviations, but that was simply the first that came to my mind. Abbreviations exist in I think every fan-made environment, like fans of Genesis, fans of Mike Oldfield, Fans of Star Wars … for example.

I just guess you didn't even use the link.

Recently when PoE was mentioned in a thread it wasn't clear if it's Path of Exile or Pillars of Eternity.

Not to mention Edgar Allan Poe and Poe Dameron.
But both are not related to the RPG genre.

I agree that it some instances the acronyms can get confusing. However, if I'm in a Pillars of Eternity thread and I type POE, I think we can assume I'm not talking about Path of Exile. Similarly, in a Divinity Original Sin thread, DOS is not short for MS-DOS.

I had no idea what NMS stood for for the longest time though.

How about EA? Is that Early Access, or a certain very disliked game developing studio??!! :)

The problem I have with abbreviations (why is that such a long word, anyway?) is the same problem I have with poor grammar/spelling.

If people have to read my post twice to be certain what I mean, I've failed to communicate.

When I post something it's because I feel I have something to contribute and the last thing I'd want would be people to not understand what I've written.

Some people might look up the abbrev. :) to try to work out what I meant, but if I make people go to extra effort to save myself an extra 10 keystrokes, the time I've saved has been wasted.

Now if the thread is called Pillars of Eternity and is all about that game, and people quickly switch to only using the PoE acronym, that's fine, because it's clear from the thread title.

But if a thread is What are your favourite games? and someone includes answers such as PoE, BG, ME, F3 or PoE, KOE that's where it becomes unclear

I hate both options so either way it doesn't matter much.

Context is 95% the solution to abbreviations.
Even if you miss the last 5% is not the end of the world.

All I can say is the OP is OP on this thread

That's a new one - I thought I would bring it up.

Corwin! I thought you of all, knew it stands for the (non profit?) organization "Engineers Australia".

pibbur who is amazed at what W knows.

PS. EA could also stand for "End (of) Abbrevs". DS.

And now they're abbreviating War of the Chosen (the XCOM 2 expansion) for WotC !

Blasphemy! Sinners! You all will burn in Hell! :cm:

Everyone knows WotC stands for Wizards of the Coast :p :p :p

Abbrevs aren't exactly the latest meta, but sometimes they're just BiS.

I'm highly entertained by a new one I saw today (not by us by the way, but no surprise if we start doing it too).

The Witcher 2 and Two Worlds 2 both were hyping at the same time, which caused terrible confusion. (Well, OK, I think it might have confused for me once for about 2 seconds… but it SHOULD have been terrible confusion!)

I've been pushing for my beloved X series to be done in Early Access. It's terribly disturbing to post that "Egosoft should go with EA!"
