Default Non-irritating Let's Plays?

August 8th, 2019, 22:42
I wonder if anyone knows of any "let's play" channels that are nice and calm, and stick to the point. I've never been interested in them before, so I don't know where to start. The ones I've tried watching made me want to place my laptop in the microwave, on high for four minutes.

I want to use them to take notes on the structure and design of various RPGs, without playing through them again myself.

Colonelrpg is a bit alow but he plays through entire games. As the name suggests he focuses on rpgs.

Very small channel so nothing fancy but he do3w respond to YouTube messages.

I don't know what you mean by staying calm and sticking to the point, but the best entry-level let's player I could recommend would be someone like christopherodd. For stuff that's more visual novel than game I'd recommend cryatotic who also conforms to your calm requirement.

For RPGs specifically, that's going to be quite difficult, at least for any form of RPG that isn't a graphics game, as the whole process of character creation, inventory management, levelling up dilemmas and walking back to town to trade for half an hour aren't exactly let's play designed concepts so the let's players of these kind of games usually sacrifice a lot of the gameplay aspects in order to 'hurry along' things for their viewers, which, for aficionados, is really quite ugly in it's own right.

I don't care too much about people faffing around in inventories and such. I'll be skipping the majority of the video, anyway. I've already played the games - I just want a quick way to review the key elements that interest me - how the game is structured, the maps, the encounter distribution, pacing, and so on.

I would just prefer them to be low-key, and without lots of shrieking and whooping, and painful attempts to be entertaining. Some nice, boring bloke who likes documenting his RPG playthroughs would be perfect.

If boring is good, then I'd recommend Bormac, he's good for everything from Skyrim to Avernum.

Often it'll be the case that specific games require specific let's players and that no one let's player fits all.

Yes, he's promising. I had a quick look at his Mask of the Betrayer series. He doesn't say too much, and most of what he does say is quiet.

I like Chris odd but I think he plays many non rpgs. Otherwise I would recommend him too.

So ripper, maybe have a look at his play lists specifically for rpgs.

Yes, in terms of the more RPG stuff, Odd's specialisms are things like X-Com and the highly visual RPGs like Withcers, Dragon Age, Bloodborne, etc.

Thanks, he also seems promising. Had a quick look at his Witcher 3 vids, and they're not too bad at all.

Just me personally of course but I consider your title an oxymoron. I have yet to see a let's play that didn't annoy me

I'm sure that quite a few would annoy me. But thankfully, they don't. Since I have no interest in let's plays at all, I don't watch them, never have.

pibbur who mostly gets his annoyance kicks from watching bad performances by idol-wannabes,

The only one I've ever checked out personally is from a bloke named Nathan Napalm, I've just been keeping tabs on Pantheon progress once a month or so. I'm not sure if it even qualifies as a Let's Play, as the game isn't out yet and likely won't be for some time, but I appreciate his efforts to keep folks informed.

I enjoy Gopher's Skyrim modding videos. No idea if he does let's plays though.

Maybe 7 to 8. That was all I could stomach. Oh I am sure they are not all bad. I am just old and just prefer to play games over watching them. The only time I watch a video is maybe for a quick tip on a game or, in a very rare situation, I want to see enough game play to get a quick feel for something.

I prefer articles and text over videos. When I do see a video I prefer very focused ones showing key things in the game like character creation, skills, level up, and maybe a little how the dialogue and combat works.

But just watching other people play? Not for me. The last one I saw, maybe a month ago, that a friend recommend … the narrator kept using a high pitched goofy voice that would go all loud on things he thought were important, annoying, or special. I stopped after 10 minutes.

I think the only one I could deal with so far is the big one for Skyrim who has done a lot of informational videos and some lets play - I have only see his informational videos though. He has a nice voice.

EDIT: Read above - Gopher, that is the one I am talking about. I like him.

Most of the Youtubers are super annoying, with terrible accents, or crazy voices and lots of pointless discursion. Why anyone would want to watch these goofs is beyond me.

With the majority of the ones I watched I turned off the sound after a couple of seconds. The voices, the noises, not to speak of the superfluous remarks usually distract me big time. I am quite an auricular(?) sensitive person.

For me it's a way to learn about games without buying them immediately.

I uses to be able to download demos for games in the olden days but nowadays very few games offer demos.

Let's plays are a way for me to watch how games work and see if I could potentially enjoy them.

I sometimes continue watching some let's plays when I think some players are really good at something to learn more advanced techniques.
For example Chris Odd plays xcom 2 on legendary difficulty all the time which for me is quite hard to do without reloads.

I rarely watch entire let's plays.
