Of the year!? It's early October! WAY too early for that!

I will have to try this one during the holidays. Really regretting I invested a large chunk of my time on something else that wasn't ready to be played.

It's sounding like this might be more my cuppa than some of the more recent Tales endeavours. I've a mate that's going to dip in this weekend, I'll wait and see what he has to say about it.

The second or third video calling it their RPG of Year posted on the site.

Hint in the world of Mass media awards I doubt it will even make the top five. On this site I expect more niche RPGs to win the top three spots as usual once again.

Also for reference no JRPG has made the RPGWatch top three.

Couch, that simply proves that there is truly some room to improve tastes here! Perhaps this year will prove an exception.

No it wont. I had this little debate with HiddenX on last years GOTY vote. Anyway we all know Pathfinder WotR will be number one. Followed by either Encased, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, Cyberpunk 2077, and maybe Atom RPG: Trudograd or Gamedec .

Well, RPGWatch is a western niche RPG site frequented mostly by oldschool "veterans", so it's just working as intended.

If we ask in any Asian site I'm pretty sure they probably don't even know what WotR is, and the top 10 are all JRPGs. The fact that we talk about Tales of Arise over here probably means the game is well above average by western standards (and not necessarily by eastern ones).

I don't know about that, I think even here the love for such franchises as Wizardry, Bard's Tale, Ultima, Might and Magic, etc, is fairly slim. And those are what I'd consider oldschool great games/franchises, at least for the computer crowd.

I'd say all of those series were great in their day; but that those days are long gone. There is no doubt that Aubrielle is right about RPGWatch being niche though.

Nereida, not Aubrielle.

Dammit, I don't know if I should feel flattered or offended.

Who is Aubrielle?!

Tales of Arise received a 35/40 from Famitsu, the premier Japanese videogame review site. Not bad, but not particularly great either.

For comparison, FF Remake and Persona 5 and Nier Automata got a 39 and Dragon Quest XI got a 40. (Skyrim is one of the 27 games to ever receive a 40, and games like GTA V, RDR 2 and The Last of Us 2 have gotten 40's or 39's, so they don't ignore western games, or always rate them lower than Japanese ones)

I also found that the previous Tales game, Tales of Berseria, got the same score, 35, and the same distribution (9/9/8/9)

Oh, this is a bit of a rabbit hole. I doubt very highly that Tales of Arise would get a game of the year award from the Japanese. Not only is 35/40 not that great, but The Idolmaster: Starlit Season got a 38!

So did Lost Judgment. So did Hades. It tied with Hitman III. Etcetera.

Some of those games don't deserve nearly a perfect score, so it goes to prove that eastern audiences do have different standards than western when it comes to entertainment, probably due to cultural differences (I mean, I love Last of Us 2, but a 40/40 feels like the reviewer had a very different idea of what makes a perfect game than anyone I know).

That's fair enough, too.

Aubrielle was great. She used to be a moderator here and I think she added a needed feminine voice to the testosterone-filled Watch

You should look up some of her posts. She also wrote a book and has a link around here somewhere. Hmmm….

https://www.amazon.com/Mary-Everythi…/dp/B086HYTB3Q

I'm not into 1920's flapper era, but the book was well written and edited. Her bio:

Cassandra was a college senior in 2004 when she experienced the events that would inspire The Flapper Covenant series. Still haunted by her experience ten years later, she set to work on novelizing that experience as half memoir and half fiction in an attempt to find catharsis. In recent years, she seems to have found some sort of peace with her sense of displacement.

When trying to unwind, she enjoys both PC and console games, especially period games like Red Dead Redemption 2, and just about any good RPG she can get her hands on.

Cassandra and her wife live in Ohio, where they are ruled by a warren of house rabbits and the video games they once thought were mere entertainment. When not laboring over a manuscript, the author can be spotted about town in 1920s-inspired dresses, attempting to find ever more effective ways of returning to the decade that adopted her so long ago.

Glad to see there were influential female RPGWatchers in the past then. I already like Aubrielle and I never met her.

Also a writer/artist, so extra respect points from me!

I miss her posts on the watch you would of liked her as she hated a certain member who always targets your posts as well. Unfortunately she left the site years ago.

Anyway she was a moderator/article writer back when I was the only news-poster.

Profile Link - https://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/member.php?u=23342

She does pop up a few times a year though.
