Ive used the same avatar for the most part on forums since I started to frequent them probably already at the old .dot time
It is a work by the american photographer Joel Peter Witkin who at the time was quite an inspiration in my own artistic endevours

I've made tons of my own brushes (in photoshop and dogwaffle and other graphical editing programs) that are trying to replicate organic things like grasses and ferns. This was a brush for creating fern-like plants that i just scribbled a "V" with.. Creating the V was done in less than a second, doing the actual brush was the real work
