Henriquejr spotted a new version of Solasta: Crown of the Magister:

Version 0.3.3 Update - Fix ALL THE THINGS!

Hi there everyone,

It's been one week since our Early Access launch and we've been hard at work to bring you a whole bunch of improvements!

DE version available here (thanks Raminblake)

Important: If you are running into infinite loading screens, make sure to verify your games files!
Go to your Steam Library and right click Solasta => Properties => Local Files Tab => Verify Integrity of Game Files.
If this doesn't fix the problem, try loading an older save (such as an auto-save) to go through the problematic area! On rare occasions, save files can get corrupted so the solution is loading another one.

The game is interesting and fun. I'm quite pleased by it so far, for early access.

I just bought it because I've already done everything there is to do in BG3 for now and need to wait for more content. To be honest, I thought I would hate it and just throw it on the trash heap. But I played 6 hours yesterday evening/night and was really getting into it.

I'm hoping there will be a way to turn off that blue grid in combat. It's totally unnecessary and an annoying mess of screen clutter. Besides that, it needs polish of course, but it's fun.

That's great to hear. I'm looking forward to playing it when it's done, has had a few patches, and is on GOG.

I am playing it now… Have just finished a complete run through as well, and starting again.
I am really enjoying it.
I am just sad it is short (early access). I have some concerns over replayability, but I often have that concern. In saying that I am playing it again with a different group of characters.
I definitely recommend it!
I also recommend supporting this developer if you can.

It was driving me a little crazy at first until I got the hang of some features, like unlit enemies. Playing again tonight though and still getting into it.

I know right! I tend to use characters with darkvision to reduce that impact, and was even thinking of going duelling spec for warrior (or pally) so he can wield a weapon in one hand with the bonus while using a torch in the other. Of course firing a ranged weapon past a friendly melee gives a part cover bonus to the other enemy...

I am hoping they will have "lit" magic equipment at some point.

Is there currently a penalty to hit while holding a torch in the off-hand? I didn't notice.

Can't you just enchant your weapon with light spell? That's what I did in the demo?

You can, I think if you have the light cantrip: clerics and wizards (high elves could get it as a cantrip, so you could be a high elf fighter with a light cantrip). They have a radius light effect, so if you are close it should be enough.

I don't think there is a penalty JDR13, but if you have the duelling ?proficiency / ?specialisation? you get +2 to damage while holding only 1, 1 handed weapon! So if you are always having to provide light with a torch in the other hand, it is a nice bonus!

I'm really hooked. I realize that I also enjoy the combats and making my way into the dungeons. But there is more than that to it, of course.

Those little comments they make, sometimes, when one of them climbs or crawls in tiny passages... :D

Yes, that's correct. Wizards have the 'Light' cantrip, which can only be cast on their own gear, staff or armour is usually a good choice. If you pass this item to another character, the effect stops, sadly ;) Since they have a free hand, they can also equip a torch, but it's generally not a good idea to put them in front to illuminate the enemies.

And there is 'Daylight', which illuminates with a radius of 6 (range of 12), and removes 'Darkness'. So it's possible to illuminate a room or a bunch of enemies, but it requires concentration, so only one at a time, and no 'Bless', 'Invisibility' or 'Bane' at the same time...

It's also possible to light the wall torches. I'm not sure it's possible to do that during combat, it must be prepared. Sometimes I lure the enemies in a pre-light room, but they're clever, sometimes they either cast 'Darkness' or stay in the dim light area.

That's really part of the fun :)

PS: seems those forums forget to translate the '...' when quoting or editing a message

This game is just amazing. They did such a great job implementing D&D 5e rules, and the character generation is top-notch, allowing you to choose backgrounds and such that have game-effects beyond personality. (For example, you might be a thief - cool. Some thief backgrounds might include the ability to concoct poisons, which you don't get as a level 1 thief but you CAN with the right background, just like backgrounds impact your character in D&D 5e.)

It's cool. I wish BG3 included a bit more robust chargen after playing this for a while. It's fun even in EA to just go through with different parties/characters and see what you missed the first time. I am recommending this to every tabletop gamer that isn't getting their tabletop fix in right now. (And yeah, Roll20 is always an option as well. :D )

My first playthrough, I didn't even bother to give anyone the "light" cantrip and that was... challenging. :D

The comments were hit or miss for me. Sometimes they were surprisingly funny, other times they were cringworthy.

The level design is really, really good though. They do overuse verticality a bit, but I love the dungeons in this game or at least what they've shown so far. The Bone Keep was starting to remind me of Durlag's Tower. Needs more traps though.

I finished the EA and enjoyed it a lot. There are still quite a few bugs with regards to class features etc, but not enough to really get in the way of enjoyment. I love the fact that levitate and fly are options - my mage would levitate up and rain down destruction from the sky ;-) Of course with spells that require concentration, you can lose it when damaged…and that can be unpleasant. Also, the use of 'shove' to knock enemies down or off an edge is pretty cool tactically. And enemies like it too...
I hope the EA version will be updated with another chapter instalment sooner rather than later, but no idea when that will be. According to Steam I spent 22 hours in the game - wonder if that counted my time with the demo?
