Joxer spotted the Star Citizen Free Fly Event starting next week:

Greetings Citizens,

On the fence about Star Citizen? Why not give it a try and see what we’re building! For the next week, we’re enable Free Fly access to all accounts… which means that anyone can jump in to Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 today! The Free Fly event gives everyone access to three unique parts of the Star Citizen experience:

  • Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 – Also known as Crusader or the “mini-PU,” this is the nucleus of the world we’re building! Featuring multiple space stations and environments, scripted missions, places to explore and more, Alpha 2.1.2 is your first look at a much larger universe!
  • Arena Commander – Arena Commander is a ‘game within a game’ that we’ve used to develop our flight mechanics and ship combat balance. Take on human opponents or an AI swarm in single seat fighter.
  • Social Module – Interact with other players while you explore our first landing zone, ArcCorp! The Social Module is intended as a starting point for our world building,
You can register for an account here to get started. If you already have an account from a previous Free Fly, you’re all set! Just log in via the Star Citizen launcher. This is the first Free Fly that includes Crusader, so there’s more to explore than ever before. Free Fly accounts will have access to the Hornet F7C military fighter, the Aurora LN starter and the Mustang Delta interceptor.
More information.

I'm a backer, and I've never even tried the Hornet or the Mustang Delta. :( I wonder if we'll get to try those too...

All I care about is the solo single player version, which at this rate will be released in 2030 or so.
Well plenty of sites said the game doesn't exist at all and were calling it vaporware and to some it was take_the_money_and_run fraud.
Who knows, maybe your prediction shows as the correct one. :)

I wanted to back this game but the more I looked into it the more it felt like SoTA money grabbing so I stayed out. But if they finish the game and I hear that it's great I'll probably buy it then.

Pledging for this game will give you both Squadron 42 (the off-line single player game) and Star Citizen (the on-line Persistent Universe).

But since both have considerably increased in scope compared to what they initially had foreseen, they are apparently splitting both into two distinct games in the sense that you have to buy them separately. Naturally, current backers will get both games but after the 14th of February new backers will have to pledge for both games separately.

So if you are on the fence, you may want to get the cheapest package and get both games now for the price of one as you will save quite some money.

And don't forget, you absolutely do not need to buy any additional "virtual spaceship", and you can get the full experience with just the minimum package.

I'll take another look.

Space sims are sort of my 'b' games. My 'a' games are CRPGs but I've oftentimes been distracted by a good space sim. As such, this is why I have such an easy reluctance to buying into Star Citizen before it's finished along with my concerns that they are biting off more than they can chew. If they mess up, there is going to be a spectacular lawsuit given the amount of money involved. But if I buy in at the cheap end as you suggest, my risk isn't much at all.

Back to this question, I installed the latest patch and tried it. I have access to the Hornet and Delta when I do not own those ships. So you could try them.
