Chrono Trigger is now onto Patch 4 which brings changes to the menu UI.

CHRONO TRIGGER – Patch #4 Update

28 June - sunilg
Hey everyone,

Thank you all again so much for continuing to support the Steam version of CHRONO TRIGGER. Today we’ve released the fourth patch, and here is a list of all the updates:

  • Changes to the menu UI
    1. We’ve changed the user interface (operation method and screen layout) of the following screens to make it more comfortable to play with controller or keyboard.
    2. Menu screen
    3. Title screen (including title menu)
    4. You can select interface either "gamepad/keyboard" or "touch panel/mouse" from "settings" in the menu.
    5. Title screen is the same regardless of your settings.
    6. The UI updates that we first outlined in patch #2 are now complete as of this patch. However, we will continue to keep adjusting the UI where necessary.
  • Other adjustments and revisions
    1. In the settings menu, "Movement" has been removed, based on UI changes.
    2. Small bugs are fixed
The ability to rebind buttons for controllers, keyboard and mouse has unfortunately been delayed and will instead be added in patch #5, which is due to be released in late July.

As there are a number of mini games in Chrono Trigger that require player input based on the names of controller buttons, we need to take some time to adjust the game rules and key binding feature to work with all of these. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but please keep an eye out for the next update.

Thanks again from everyone on the CHRONO TRIGGER team for all of your support.
More information.

Wow, look at Square go! And this is for an old, $15 game! Why didn't NieR:Automata get this kind of love?

Considering how deplorable the state of the game was upon release, this is good progress. Mind you, I've not gotten it for my computer as of yet, but two friends have and were quite disappointed. I lent them my playstation portable so they can play it as it was meant to be. I do plan on getting the computer version at some point, simply to reward the company for making the translation.

Hmm I thought they said the first patch was final? Maybe I'm thinking about another JRPG port. Anyway it's good to see more patches that fix the port.:)

I believe they meant "final" as in a patch that would make it actually playable. At launch, this product supposedly not only looked bad but wouldn't even run for a fair amount of purchasers. This game is a masterpiece and deserves much better than it received on this initial launch, and I hope they continue this work until the computer version is perfect.

Latest update contents:

  1. Key binding function implemented
Key binding functionality for game pad, keyboard and mouse controls has been implemented to improve the game controls.

    • When using a keyboard, you can now change the various key settings from the game menu or title menu by going to settings -> controller settings -> keyboard settings.
    • When using a mouse, you can now click the right mouse button to cancel. You can confirm using a left click, and move characters and cursors by dragging the mouse. Changes to the mouse settings in the operating system will also be reflected in-game.
  2. An extras section has been added!
This has been added to the title menu. After completing the game, the following sections will be unlocked:

    • Illustrations
View various illustrations from CHRONO TRIGGER
    • Sound
Listen to the BGM from the game

*Only endings that have been unlocked/viewed already will be viewable in the “Endings” option. All other content is unlocked at once.

    • It is now possible to use direct keyboard input when entering names.
    • A confirmation dialogue is now displayed when confirming entered names. If characters unable to be displayed in-game are used when entering a name, this can be checked when the dialogue is shown.

I'm impressed by Square's post-release support for this game especially considering how old it is. I'll probably pick it up at some point despite having already played it multiple times over the years on various platforms. It's one of the few JRPGs I like.

They really needed to give this project a lot of extra loving. I've not bought it yet, but I've read plenty and this game deserved better than the shoddy launch it received. If this is all done correctly, most people will forget about the poor start and revel in the beauty of this true gem.
