The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

It's been 30 years since the dawn of New Wave. 30! Heck, the shoegaze scene popped up and went back underground nearly 20 years ago.

So, in honor of feeling all the rings in our wood (boy, if that's not a loaded phrase), how about a tune that's over 2 decades old...

(I think they did a portion of that vid at Magerette's house ;) )

Coldplay's "Viva la Vida"

My fiancee is turning me on to some mainstream stuff, and this is one of the cds that Ive started liking. Strikes me as a cross between U2 and The Police / Sting at times. I like it, pretty much w/ the exception of the awful title track.

Influential people indeed. Monica Richards is the voice from Faith and the Muse. Julianne Regan fronted All About Eve. There's a guy from Fields of Nephilim, too.

Here's their MySpace, which has some info on who's who.

Good pointer, Sammy. Ethereal, but still very lush and powerful.

Darn, now I'm gonna have to check it out. :(

I've never gotten into Coldplay. To me their music is (to quote from some Elton John review) "well written, well played - boring".

I don't doubt their musical quality and I fully understand their popularity. It's good music, but it's not my kind of music.

I think we're getting old, Mike. I made the same connection.

That´s somewhat bold statement though, considering those two songs were released just two years from each other :).

At the Drive-In - Relationship in Command (2000)

Kinda classic "post"-hardcore album already and rightly so.
Full of passion, energy, melody, musical intricacy and there simply isn´t a weak spot throughout the whole album.
Its two core members later started nowadays better known band, The Mars Volta,
but with the possible exception of De-Loused in the Comatorium, none of their albums came even close to the sheer excellence that is RiC, imo.

I'm listening to this album on Spotify. It's not Disintegration or Black Celebration, but it's got a relaxing kind of quality to it. I like it better than Velocifero which I find to be the same kind of album only slightly less imaginative sound (there's no major difference, and I can't quite say why Witching Hour is better, but I get a bit bored with Velocifero).

I with their two first albums were up on Spotify so I could check them out as well. I believe I'd like them better yet.

Excellent call, Ubereil. I actually was going to purchase that one last night, but it's no longer available on Amazon for some reason. I'll probably see if toneVendor still has it in stock. "604" is supposed to be excellent as well. More new wave-ish and less lush, but still very good. I've got a couple singles off it, but never got around to making a purchase.

Astra: The Weirding.

I discovered this band and their debut album "The Weirding" (2009) 2 days ago, and since then I've been playing it almost constantly. It's best characterized as retro prog/psychedelic rock. Very 1970's, similar to what Pink Floyd, Yes and King Crimson did at that time. Very good.

Here is the title track, split into two:
The Weirding part 1
The Weirding part 2

Enjoy!

Well, Pat Metheny's Orchestrion is out for a week, and my review is up. Very solid music, but not as wild as the instrumentation would suggest.

figured i'd check out Faith & the Muse, one of those bands Ive never really gotten around to. Really like "Elyria" so far, listening to it now for like the 3rd time today. It's one of those cds, like on the first listen I already know I'm hearing something special, and it's the beginning of a wonderful relationship.

Happiness is discovering a new band and having an extensive musical catalog ahead to explore.

I'm currently listening to Pavement's "Wowee Zowee" again. I know it's kinda clichéd, but somehow Pavement is one of the few bands I can listen to when I'm at school. I'm currently at the track "Rattled By The Rush". If someone managed to have avoided Pavement their entire life, you can have a listen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl7ClYxS4mQ.

Before that I was listening to Six Organs Of Admittance's album "Sun Awakens". It's the best album of one of the best psych-folk out there. You can listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_li...six+organs+of+admittance+sun+awakens&rclk=pti. "Black Wall" is one of my favourite tracks.

And I'll probably end up listening to Lightening Bolt's "Wonderful Rainbow" within the next few hours. Have a taste here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTPLcst4OL8

Brighten The Corners is the best Pavement album. THat's a fact. :D
Are you listening to the Rhino Reissues? Remastered and lots of bonus tracks, I highly recommend those versions.

Wowee Zowee is a strange album. There's some really good stuff on their but also some mediocre stuff. It's just all over the place.

Listening to: Century Of Self by …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
Very different to their previous albums. The first few tracks even kind of sound a bit like lame run-of-the-mill emo/punk but soon after their knack for brilliant composition and catchy but nuanced melody thankfully rises above. Definitely growing on me.

Naw - that was one of those songs she grew up with her parents playing, and was singing it randomly on Friday, and next thing you know ...
