The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

Tough call - it really depends on how interested you are in the minutia of his life and drumming and the synth drums and so on. For me, I was a fan of his 70s stuff with Yes & King Crimson, a HUGE fan of his late-70s fusion work and with the Discipline era King Crimson, and also his later jazzy Earthworks stuff, so I dug into it pretty well. It is better than many autobiographies I have read, but not great for anyone not already biased to like it.

I've enjoyed his quips when he appeared in some of the Yes documentaries. Probably worth a buy for me. :)

Cool stuff :)

I have been feeling Minimalism this week, and one of the highlights of that particular movement is Steve Reich's 'Music for 18 Musicians' ... so simple, yet so incredibly dynamic and complex ... here is the full recording from 1978:

I've just finished watching Armageddon for the _th time and I will never get tired of seeing that movie and listening to its theme song over and over again. So right now, youtube is open and playing "I don't want to miss a thing" :)

If you like music influenced by Gamelan Orchestras, then try out "Forbidden Friendship" from the "How to train your Dragon" OST.

Besides, Bill Bruford is also on Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe or how that Yes album is called.
It's still my favourite Yes album besides The Ladder [Homeworld].

Me, I'm currently listening to the new Enya album. :)

I'm behind the times -- apparently the songs they're based on came out five years ago, but I enjoyed the scifi mini-movie made up of these three videos.

Except there seems to be a huge chunk of plot missing between part 2 and part 3. Why are they going to outer space?

There's a new game available on Steam: "Emily Wants to play".
There's an old song by Pink Floyd: "See Emily Play" (apparently its cricket).

These is no known connection between these two things.

pibbur who wonders if there will ever be a game based upon the hobbies of little Arnold Layne

PS. The guy with the guitar is David Gilmour. He didn't take part in recording the piece, but when (1968) filming this (and other films, promoting different songs) Barrett had reached the - "we no longer pick him up for concerts"-stage. DS.

Dream Theater is releasing their 13th album on 29th january 2016. Here are some of th things we know:

- it will be a double CD album, more than 2 hours of music and 34 tracks.
- the title is "The Astnonishing"
- it's a concept album based upon some fantasy setting.

Lots's of hype here: http://www.dreamtheater.net/theastonishing?intcmp=151204/dtheater/rr/spl/s_cat/but/ftr/ww/astonishing-preorder-splash_the-astonishing-button
- portraits of 8 participants in the story, revealed one by one
- two opposing? powers "The Great Northern Empire Of The Americas" and "Ravenskill Rebel Militia"
- a map with more and more details as time passes.

I really like Dream Theater, and so far (excluding their first album) no album has disappointed me, I've found a lot to like and some things (mostly minor) to dislike, but I am a bit worried here. It can be a masterpiece. Or it can turn out to be extremely cheesy. They're fantastic musicians, but their lyrics are mostly so and so. So unless they've got help with world building I'm a bit skeptic.

No doubt they will deliver musically, and if the story sucks, maybe I'll be able to ignore i. About 50 days to go.

Here's the first video:
.
Typical Dream Theater, and at places (IMO) very good Dream Theater. But all in all, I'm not entirerly convinced.

I am a dream theatre fan myself. But I have to say that they get a bit repetitive... listening to this is not so much different from their other songs.

Speaking of Dream Theater, I love Jordan Rudess in his work with the trio Levin-Minnemann-Rudess from last year ...

Levin is famous from early 80s King Crimson, playing bass and 'stick', Minnemann is a maniac drummer and multi-instrumentalist (his album 'Celebration' this year is really good also), and Rudess is loads of fun.

"Goliath"

That night I remember what you slipped in my glass
We came rewinding when
I foamed at the mouth while the lights winked at me
And now my shape is kept
The rain it can't hide, wash the pain from this hex
Is it so permanent?
Did she catch a left eye when it blinks three times
Or once just to seal you in?
In your drunken breath did it stain like us
In place of poison heat?
I gotta rid this world of your intention
Swap the corpse in the casket

Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Does he make you feel alright?

When I seep inside your truth through suspicious little coughs
You sank your nails inside a key while the door you shut closed up
The black stockings you kept smell of wet cigarette
Torn of lust that you could not keep
I have slept inside your fault to have you keep me here on this leash
For the rest of your pets I will feed to this theft
As we consummate the vows of defeat
And when you pray for an end to this I do believe this is eternity

Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Your closet is bulging
White marrow withholding
Does he make you feel alright?

Give me that corpse please
The one that tore nightly
I really want it now
Fold the arms slowly
Don't want you to hold me
It fits just like a glove
Your closet is bulging
White marrow withholding
Does he make you feel alright?

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now

Say it, say it, say it loud
Say it, say it, say it loud
Hold your heavy burden
In a pocket full of drink that I have drunk
Spit the remnants in your direction
This is the closest to any kingdom that you will come

I'm starting to feel a miscarriage coming on
It's numbing a stump clearing in my throat
And I just can't lose grip of it
She fumigated my mental hygiene
I'm all out of pulse but I know you can resuscitate me

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before

Never heard a man speak like this man before
Never heard a man speak like this man before
All the days of my life ever since I've been born
Never heard a man speak like this man before
Watch me now
