C2077 Is it playable?

Cyberpunk 2077
Upgrade to 10? It's free.
He wont look at the references in his reply.
There is no UPgrade for win7. Only a sidegrade to adware/spyware windows where users are the product and sold to advertisers. Then beyond that I imagine some kind of MS Azure 100% cloud based OS. I mean, why would a Windows user even need their critical OS system files all vulnerable on local storage? That's just asking for trouble!! They'll probably delete System32 to get more ram for their minecraft server.

The only reason MS ever gave me to get the next windows version was refusing to release the latest directx on the old OS. But 2077 is dx12 on win7, anyway. Plus, I think Vulkan games run better.

…and to any arguments about spyware nonsense: use a Linux distribution instead if you care so much about your privacy. All of the commercial OS send data to their creators. Also W7. Sticking to that old piece of software only because of spyware-arguments is moronity level 100.

Anyway, back to the topic: I have had time to play the game for about 6 hours on Stadia. One thing I noticed: sometimes my machine gun just shoots constantly and I have no way of stopping it except for by switching a weapon. Is this an enemy hack or a bug? The enemy hacks are quite unclear to me as they seem to do all sorts of things that appear bugs but they obviously are not.

Is there a way of protecting yourself from hacks? I would google but want to stay away from spoilers.

I'm over 23 hours in, and still no CTD or freeze.

I have found my first serious bug, though. For some reason when I was aiming through sights I couldn't fire. Didn't matter which gun I switched to, I could only fire from the hip. While I was trying to investigate why, I got killed. On re-load I re-spawned inside someone inside a car (she was meant to be there due to a mission I was on), and when I exited the car I ended up in some impossible-to-get-to position where I was pummelled with grenades by the enemy until I died again. On re-load I re-spawned inside the same chick again. Rinse and repeat.

Other than that though, no major bugs. I seem to be one of the lucky ones.

The 'I Spy' perk will let you identify where a hack is coming from. Once you have that, it's a lot easier to locate the netrunner who's hacking you and take them out. It's part of the Intelligence skill tree.

MS hasn't stopped supporting win7. You just have to pay for updates now.

My win7 is set up to not send data. I do also have a Linux dual boot, but it's just there to fix windows if shit hits the fan.

As for the topic. Is it playable on win7? Yes. Win7 is officially supported by 2077. Unfortunately, it's also a buggy piece of shit so good luck.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/tr...s-faq/windows-7-extended-security-updates-faq

Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) include security updates for critical and important issues as defined by Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) for a maximum of three years after January 14, 2020. After January 14, 2020, if your PC is running Windows 7 and you haven't purchased Extended Security Updates, the computer will no longer receive security updates.

Win7 you have to pay to keep it? Meanwhile, you can have Win10 for "free". Big data harvesting is far more valuable in 2020, to a rich monopoly, than software sales.

I mean, look. Some people are happy with ads. Others get ad blockers. Others get adblockers and spyware blockers. Security, privacy; it's all the same thing.

I could go on about my vision for the internet built with open source collaboration and voluntary donations. Unfortunately, because most people are oblivious, we supported a system of "free" sites that make money with tracking and ads. I hate ads! NO JUNK MAIL. it's on my mailbox.

It's about so much more than win10. It's about how we have been complicit in fucking up the entire social structure of society for "free" online services that have become dangerous monopolies that can literally control public opinion, sway election results, spread misinformation, etc.

It's about how the internet could have been ours and instead it's been hijacked by really rich and official looking scammers. Instead of an infected PC spamming you with porn ad popups on your desktop in a manner that's alarming, you now sign up to a site, like Facebook, and agree to have everything you look at, on and off the site, tracked so they can deliver you ads. In return, you're rewarded with being able to post everything you can about your life, upload a photo of your dinner to Instagram, dance like a tart on tiktok, etc, etc. Maybe if you're a good enough "influencer" and bringing in enough clicks you can even have a cut of the ads!

I say it fucking sucks. The bulk of the internet is ruined and I refuse to support anything that works on the free model of spyware/adware.

And watch out because Win10 S is the vision for the future. People are literally going to lose any control over their OS and they wont even fucking care.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us... a commitment to,released on October 22, 2009.

Microsoft made a commitment to provide 10 years of product support for Windows 7 when it was released on October 22, 2009. This 10-year period has now ended, and Microsoft has discontinued Windows 7 support so that we can focus our investment on supporting newer technologies and great new experiences. The specific end of support day for Windows 7 was January 14, 2020. Technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC are no longer available for the product. Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.

If you have to pay for updates then it's obviously no longer being officially supported in the context that most people mean when they say "supported".

As far as the other things you mention, well…that's an entirely different discussion meant for another thread. :)

No more free support. They really want to get people onto win10! Is that for your good or Microsofts? If they cared about you they would offer the extended security updates for free. Instead we get forced. We get passive aggressive threats about security that use FEAR to manipulate you. We get FEAR of loss of a free copy that somehow is still available. MS can fuck off with their fear mongering tactics.

Or maybe for the next sci-fi dystopia RPG. Actually, Watchdogs is already pretty onto that kinda thing.

Or perhaps you should just ditch them and roll to that Linux distro of your choice for good ;) I hear games work on Linux too if you're willing to go through a hassle which seems like your thing.

Yeah, but this PC is old and completed. It's not going anywhere.

The real question is what will I do for my new PC build? Maybe an all AMD machine. 5900x, 6800XT, something like that. It's not just the lack of parts that's delaying it. It's also the OS.

I have been looking into sorting out win10 and I think you can set up Enterprise edition to behave adequately. But I'll definitely have some manner of Linux dual boot, just in case.

And, yeah, maybe I could give all Linux a try, but, in the end, performance is the most important thing for my gaming machine.

Here's 2077 running on Arch Linux with Proton.

I mean that's one theory. If you also camp with the flat earthers.

This sounds like advice from someone who's never worked in an enterprise environment where there's a whole department dedicated to hope-we-don't-get-hacked-today. We've dealt with 2 major cyber-security incidents this year since Covid hit. And we're on a constant quest to balance the security education of clueless users, along with patching holes in our network (not OS related, we're talking 2 factor authentication to "fix" stupid people for example), while trying to keep things not so tyrannical on people's work routines.

Getting rid of our remaining Windows 7 users was big load off our shoulders. Unifying users into one platform is an excellent idea (and a big reason Apple has done the same for OSX users, and even iOS, but that's a discussion for another thread). Support one OS for millions of configurations, is EXPONENTIALLY easier, faster and more streamlined than supporting 2 of them. The build updates that are "forced" on people make it statistically better in the long run. It continues to finely tune a unified operating system with a small handful of builds to support.

Sure, there's a certain amount of control that you might have to give up, but this is only a concern for less than 1% of the users out there. And you can't appeal to both the 99% and 1%. So why would MS coddle the "special" minority, especially when there's other options for them out there? People will also go on to complain about certain updates that broke their environment, but statistically, Win 10 is much more stable and problem-negative in the balance.

So, what if win10 didn't exist? All your users would be on one OS. You wouldn't have had to go through the effort of forcing people to upgrade?

Why does it exist? What did you hope to gain by getting people to use it? What does it do that win7 cannot, besides harvest data? Or was it simply that you HAD to force an upgrade because you required the security updates?

Are you interested, at all, in more Microsoft spying features? Perhaps a productivity score?

"Esoteric metrics based on analyzing extensive data about employee activities has been mostly the domain of fringe software vendors. Now it's built into MS 365.

A new feature to calculate 'productivity scores' turns Microsoft 365 into an full-fledged workplace surveillance tool:"

And isnt 365 entirely cloud based? Will you enjoy it when you don't have to do anything but get people to login to Windows in the cloud? Seems pretty easy and secure!

A Microsoft worker, nice :) I get all that you discuss above (see my reply about the moronity of trying to avoid the latest OS version) but am wondering one thing: why are all commercial OS developers forcing online identification? I.e. why am I asked to sign in to Microsoft account (or One Cloud or whatever) every time the OS updates itself? You can probably identify people using the OS keys anyway. Why spam the user all the time? I would prefer the "don't show me this again" option. I don't remember if I have an MS account, and don't want to have it either. If I do, my password is probably a joke, and someone could break into my computer because of it (?) - I just don't want to care about all those superfluous user accounts corporations can use to trace me. A strong local password would be much better.

There's no "moronity" in trying to avoid things you perceive as bad. Perhaps you meant "futility"?

How targeted do you like your ads?

The day where electronic billboards greet you by name as you pass by isn't as distant as you think.

Perhaps futility is a better term. Anyway, you should not complain about W7 being ended on internet forums. It makes sense to end old products. Use your energy of installing games on Linux instead ;)

I'm too tired to write a proper rant.

But, as I said, it's about the bigger picture.

Would the a billboard that greeted you and displayed private, perhaps embarrassing, knowledge about you appear as clever or creepy? Where do you draw the line?

The thing is, like we've seen with games microtransactions, the more gradually you introduce these things the more easily they're accepted as normal. Then each time that "normal" line is pushed up a little.

I think win10 being so widely accepted can only be a bad thing because the line for what is acceptable has taken a massive leap and soon we'll have productivity scores in the workplace then before you know it that's tied into your global social value score and so on.

Soon we may have a cashless society where your spending is also tracked, sold to advertisers and plays into your social value rating. Then who knows how this rating might effect your life?

I forget how that Black Mirror episode went but I know I'd be offended by some big tech algorithm deciding and displaying my value to society based off monitored producivity and purchases.

I think we've actually already crossed into creepy territory and its been so well hidden behind the scenes and gradually introduced that very few people have noticed. There have been some more highly reported data leaks and the odd government suing google or facebook over various privacy issues, but It's not the sort of thing the corporations who employ these practices is that eager to tell you, plus, the TV news stations who link you to FB and Twitter aren't going to educate the masses, either.

Meanwhile, people who do try to educate you are called moronic and bundled in with flat earthers and the like. It really is futile.
