What are you reading?

Completed Leviathan wakes first book in Expanse series. It was fun like good sci-fi show.Book follows 2 very different characters, Holden true sci-fi ship captain(I found him most similar to Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly) and Miler who is inspired by noir movies/novels.
Nice lite sci-fi book and I would definitively recommend it if you like shows Firefly and Star trek.

I finished book 14 of the Wheel of Time series. I had a hard time putting the book down, especially in the second half of the book. Overall it was a very good experience although I do remember thinking that things could have been condensed a bit here and there, although I've read most of the books such a long time ago that I can't remember clearly what anymore :)

I just finished a book last night, Come Barbarians, and if you like political thrillers with some rather serious physical combat interlaced, this will be right up your alley. It starts off slow, but after the first 30 pages or so, it really picks up and never stops.

The Kindle editions of Night Watch and Day Watch were on sale last week for $1.99 each, so I grabbed them and pre-ordered New Watch (yes I know it has been out in non-US countries for at least a year). So I am enjoying Night Watch again for the first time in years ...

On the last of the 5 books of Songs of Fire and Ice. Really seeing an improvement in writing skills compared to book 2 for example. Season 4 on HBO starts Sunday, and I wonder if Martin will be able to keep up with the series.

He already said the series will overtake him at some point, and that he told the important people major plot points just in case. Don't have a reference right now, but I think it was on his blog.

Didnt the tv series also slowed down last season, adapting half a book in a whole season ?

Night Watch and Day Watch were great reads, the tv adaptation not so much... $2 seems like a good price, last I checked back in December e-kindle editions were still more expensive than the mass market paperbacks. I'll hold off buying a kindle until publishers are not so greedy anymore (there is also a large price different between US and europe).

I read books on Smashwords.com and I read a couple a day if it's slow at work. I put up little mini-reviews if it isn't absolutely horrible, but I read so many books I generally don't remember them much after a week or so.

Yes, I've read that on his blog that he thought he may die before he finishes the series so that's why the plot points have been given out, but he's still hopeful he can be ahead of the show. Seeing how the series pace is slowing up and they continue to add stuff not in the books, it may work out. We'll see if they can add enough gratuitous soft porn to give George breathing room. ;)

I think the show will finish first, if for no other reason than too many characters are kids that are growing up. Its taken him what 5 years since the last book, and it will easily be another year before the next one is done. Then another 5 or 6 years before the last one? No way the show is lasting to 11 seasons or more

The third season has already begun to look tired IMO, I think people will be pretty done with it quite a lot sooner than the immediate hype suggests. The over-use of the torture scenes in the third series were a real indicator that something felt tired. I personally almost felt ripped-off, like-wise with the never ending 'march' of the undead. I know undead are slow, but jeez, that fat guy seems to cover more ground than they do. The dialogue felt more forced than the first two and it all felt a lot more hit-and-miss.

Then I found out its because they're doing one book in two series...

Oh yeah, the Hobbit syndrome...

I don't think its Hobbit syndrome at all. The Hobbit is a short book that somehow Jackson is stretching into 3 movies. To get to one season, they have to cut a TON of stuff in each book (granted a lot of the descriptive stuff is easily cut, but they still cut a lot of other stuff). Two seasons for one of those books (and I believe book 3 is one of the longer ones) makes sense.

But yeah, certain things are getting tired. The torture stuff got old (though the fucker deserved it). Really though, I'm not sure how they would have portrayed Theon's change otherwise. In the book, it just sort of happens, but by reading Theon's thoughts, you understand what he went through. Hard to do that in TV or film.

Seems they sacrificed some good character development for extra torture and sex scenes, though. Too bad they feel the need pander to the lowbrows...

I'll give you the sex scenes, can't argue that sex scenes aren't popularist (hence I didn't bother to include them in my critique) but then sex scenes don't normally go on for huge amounts of time over many episodes - maybe in a show called 'Stallion Man' or something!

But the torture? I can't believe that's popularism. While torture can be popularist, like having a hero be tortured by a bad guy in order to add sympathy to the hero, or for bad-guy to get tortured into revealing the next mission for the good-guy, maybe even sexual torture following the success of Shades of Grey, but, essentially, I don't think I've ever seen such emotionless, drawn-out, filler-like torture like that before and I think it's a stretch to say its even just popularist eye-porn.

I would have been perfectly happy with a 10 minute scene of the youngest daughter hacking him to bits with her newly found sword skills - that would have been loads more popularist as it would have provided the traditional revenge/bad-guy-exit combined with the greater appreciation of a popular currently good character.

I know that guy is supposed to live, so that option was out, but you know what I mean.

I just finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and started on Chamber of Secrets, but want to finish Chamber of Secrets before watching the Sorcerers Stone movie (yes, even with kids, I managed to avoid watching any of the movies thus far)

I'm reading the third installment of the gentlemen bastards "Republik of thieves" and while it's easy reading, it's the worst of the 3. The first is superior by far.

"Legend" has nothing to do with the "name of the wind". Second is owesome but "legend" is a gem. Although, Gemmell's writing in this is raw compared to his later books.

Just finished mistborn,

Decent story, ending seemed rushed to me.

Now im reading david eddings again, the belgarion. Very nice series if you haven't read it. But eddings quickly becomes more of the same in his later work.
