New X-Com Shooter?
November 1st, 2009, 18:46
Gamespot posted a newsbit that trademark obsessed site Superannuation dug up the online resume of Australian 3D ARtist Shamus Baker claiming he worked on Take-2's new version of X-Com from 2007-2008. The resume is no longer posted but they also noted an old news report surfaced that there was an undisclosed shooter in the works reported at the time at put two and two together.

Shooter? Hmm.. I loved X-Com because the aliens were like a creeping and unknown threat, which worked because the game was turn-based. Shooters are usually a lot faster in pace and their scares more instant and short-lived. Still, it's a good setting that could be explored more, so this is good news.

there were rumours about one (no surprise) but this is the closest we've had to any sort of confirmation.
I remember back in the day the strange twists and turns X-Com took trying to get the game to evolve, but thanks to games like UFO:Extraterrestrials and its core us fans know it should be a TSG.

Well that sucks rocks. Guess we'll have to take care of our UFO:ET disks if we want to play an XCom remake.

You know, there were rumours of Irrational working on an X-Com game for ages and whilst I never thought a publisher would fund a AAA turn-based game, I thought Ken Levine might give it a decent treatment.
Then it turns out to be a shooter from a studio associated with Irrational. Blah.
Edit: Huh. Turns out 2K uses a dumb-ass naming system and 2K Australia (ie, Irrational's Canberra studio) is actually the lead - for some reason, they lump the Canberra studio under the 2K Marin label.
Jonathon Chey leads the Canberra studio, has been Levine's partner for ages back to SS2 and made Freedom Force. It won't be a "genuine" X-Com game but there might be some hope for some depth and interesting gameplay.

Irrational Aus was (rumoured to be) making it prior to Bioshock 1's release so it has been in development for ages, though to be fair they kept getting pulled off it to do work on both Bioshocks. Having the 'real' 2k Marin helping them will probably make a nice change.
The 2k Marin name is a late change and seems likely to be a way of cashing in on being able to directly associate it with Bioshock since they managed to associate the original with a now defunct name (2k Boston) otherwise I suspect they would have gone back to IG Australia at the same time as '2k Boston' reverted to Irrational.

Many classic X-COM fans might hate me for saying it, but I'm looking forward to this FPS X-COM because of X-COM : Alliance.
When it was first announced and screenshots were released, I was really looking forward to it. Loved how it looked and felt.
Hopefully, this game will live up to my expectations for X-COM : Alliance

I hate companies stripping names off well-known development studios, and instead giving them a nondescript "2K Whatsoever" or "Rockstar Whatsoever" name to further push their Glory.
It's as if Volkswagen would buy Rolls Royce and calling all Rolls cars instead Volkswagen cars.
Some developing studios names act like trade marks. But the "big heads" in the monopolistic (at least they try to) companies don't see that.
Like Rockstar Vienna. A well-known Austrian studio named Neo with a long heritage - then "Rockstar" once decides at one point to secretly change the locks of the building and let all employees stand one day stand before closed doors. This is real, no joke, and although Wikipedia tells only very little about it, this rude behaviour went like a shock through the DACH gaming press. It' something I will not forgive.

I'd act surprised, but I'd be lying.
Since it is so old, they're basically going to run off the old crowd, and have to bring in a totally new crowd. So it would be about as effective as creating a new IP. *shrug*
Yeah, it's complicated.

It's as if Volkswagen would buy Rolls Royce and calling all Rolls cars instead Volkswagen cars.Volkswagen owns Rolls. It's considered part of Bentley. Technically, BMW has licensed the name from Rolls Royce that build airplane engines. VW owns the RR mascot, and grill design. As part of a deal, BMW supplies engines still, and the RR name is sold under the BMW banner, while the same basic cars are sold as Bentleys under the VW banner. But they are effectively the same cars.
Yeah, it's complicated.

Interesting…. Definitely not what I expected.
In what year does the game take place?

Not what I figured, either. Looks very 50's to me with the cars, dress and decor, but the houses are wrong. Is that placeholder art, or are the aliens living crude oil?

I dunno. I have no idea. I have just picked this out from a long line of general gaming news.
