Two Worlds: Epic Edition

This appears to be on sale at Amazon.com for $7.39. I remember being interested in Two Worlds when it first came out but I was busy with something else at the time. Is it worth picking up at that price?

I thought it was awful and I remain perplexed at the love it gets. I'm also convinced that the same game with a "Bethsoft" logo would be laughed off these boards. But, it seems I'm reasonably alone in that view, so take that as you will.
2W2 looks much improved and is just around the corner, so I'd put the $7 towards that.

I also thought this game was boring. They had tons of space and nothing in it. I searched the frozen north and found nothing but a grog village and a teleporter there. I wasted all that time running around for what? Maybe a plant here or there.
I'm actually a little surprised that Beth didn't make this game. It feels like a vanilla version of any of their games. If Two Worlds had an editor supported by the developers then maybe, just maybe, the mod community could fix this game like they do with every Beth title including Morrowind and Fallout 3 and those are my favorites from Bethesda
I'm not sure about Two Worlds 2 either. I'll wait for the reviews before I even think about picking that one up.

I thought it was just ok, although to be honest, I only played about 20-30% through the game. I plan on doing a full playthrough after I'm done with FO:NV, and before I start Two Worlds 2.
It's funny how divided opinions are on Two Worlds. Some people flat out despise the game, while others claim it's a flawed gem. Personally, I think it's worth getting if you like sandbox style RPGs, especially if you consider how few there actually are.
If you're in the US, you can get the original version for only $4.90 at GoGamer. (Afaik, everything in the Epic Edition can be simply added with a patch.)

So is the problem that it is empty? Is the game system awful? Any plot to it? Interesting characters?

Standard plot, nothing special, but it's not horrible. The combat system is fairly simplistic, but at least the game has some interesting monsters.
One major problem the game had when it was first released was that it quickly became very easy. I heard they improved the balanced significantly in the later patches.
Iirc there's a playable demo.

I've played it patched and I guess it's a little harder than the first time I tried it. Although I didn't play it too long before, once again, I became bored to tears.
I liked the ghosts and some of the other monsters. Not all of the skills were stupid, but some of the skills are just ridiculous. Anyone put any points into swimming, unhorse or burn? Those skills are utterly useless. Unhorse would be ok if there were any enemies on horseback. It boggles the mind why they even left that skill in there.
JDR summed up the plot pretty well.

I didn't have big expectations, so I couldn't be disappointed by it.
I enjoyed its sandbox exploration more than that of Oblivion and Gothic 3, which were en vogue at that time.
Regarding the C&C aspect you can decide, which of two factions will rule a substantial part of the game area. Hasn't much impact on the story but is a nice touch, I thought.
I go with "It's pretty good."

Nothing to see here.

It was an interesting game, but ultimately it had too many severe flaws.
For some weird reason, I'm looking forward to TW2 as if the first one never happened.

Two worldfs as such … is to me (I'm playing it since 2-3 weeks now) kind of an explorer's dream come true.
Of course there's huge distances to be crossed, but in some places you just stumble upon at least something. It is a little bit like Gothic 1 expanded by a *lot* of miles.
Recently, I stumbled upon a cave amidst the wilderness. I didn't see it coming, since it looked like a few blocks of stone from one side.
But all in all it is a bit empty, I must agree, but I think this is kin of natural to this special kind of land (which consists mostly of wilderness). This isn't like the US East Coast, or like the Ruhrgebiet, where thousands of people live in a well-prepared landscape (good roads, lots of towns etc.). Two Worlds is basically nothing but Wilderness. Like let's say Europe 1000 years ago.

This is my review;
Two Worlds
This game gave mixed feelings. I could go on ranting what I did not like, but then I had to explain why I spent 13 days playing it, exploring almost every piece of the map.
Two Worlds is a massive singleplayer RPG, similar to Gothic and the Elder Scrolls series. This means exploration of a huge map, filled with dungeons, camps, cities etc. I tend to enjoy this kind of game and I love to just run around and explore stuff. Two Worlds just happens to be a "left over" since I have nothing else to play. In Oblivion I had the problem that since all dungeons/maps was generated, I had to reason to explore. I loved Gothic 3 though, despite a sea of bugs that even trashed savefiles once in awhile.
Two Worlds was to me slightly more entertaining than Oblivion simply because it's designed, not randomized. However, the design itself is not good. The game is extremely unbalanced. I could have finished the game using 15 points (fire magic) and let that be that. Loot and money was mostly pointless as a mage. Many times I wondered why I even bothered. At the end of the game I had about 99.50% combat efficiency, meaning that I died like ten times or so during the entire game.
The dialogues are simply… bad. I cannot really put my finger on it, but quests just do not feel exciting. The main quest didn't feel exiting either. The main story is almost as bad if not even worse than Oblivion. There were a couple of broken quests, even if I run patch 1.7 that is over a gig in size.
The final bit after grabbing the last relic I simply rushed. I felt it was time to just go on with it, finish the game, leaving the rest of the quests undone.
I will play the sequel. Not because Two Worlds was a good game, but because it's the kind of games I like and they are rare. I do hope they will make a massive improvement on balance, character system, quests and story.

For $7 I'd grab it. I had a similar experience to JDR13 but I played closer to 50% of it before losing motivation. However, the first 30% I really enjoyed and it was a good 20 hours played. The combat is fun and the inventory system is addictive (adding weapon attributes and stacking etc). The quests are pretty interesting too. Its a very nice looking game and its fun to be in the world. The game balancing is a bit off and if you stay in a zone too long you do get too powerful. I did notice pockets of very powerful creatures so its not a total cakewalk.
Bottom line = $7 give it a try!

I say get it. I've never gotten more than an hour or two into it, but it's worth it for the voice acting alone.

I say get it. For the price you won't regret it. One of the things I liked was that they seem to get the population right in the various areas. Usually in games towns and cities are reduced in size or devoid of residents, not here. Also it is easy but that just means you can blow through it quickly as an appetizer fow 2W2.

The dialogue is hillarious, in a perverse sort of way. I enjoyed the game for what it was, not for what it could have been!!

My experience of Two Worlds was on 360 and very short. Graphics were terrible (not to imply that graphics need to be amazing, but these were obviously not tailored for the system), sound/voice over was bad.
This is how I remember it:
I enter a tomb(iirc), button mash some enemies and in the process pull out a torch. When I leave the tomb it's very sunny so I button mash to try to put the torch away but it seems there is no possible way to do that. While I'm fooling around with the torch, some wolves sneak up on me and kill me. I respawn nearby and the same wolves attack me. I managed to pull out a torch and get killed. That is where I turned off the game and never thought about playing it again.
Interestingly, I mentioned it to a friend who had the exact same experience.
My vote: Don't waste your time.

Like you would try to move you hand to and fro in a very, VERY fast way like when you have gum sticking onto your fingers ? Or try to chase flies away ?
There is no way to do that, of course. You go into the inventory and you just remove the torch from the slot. It's as simple as that. No button smashing required.

Button mashing is basically hitting every button until you find the one that you need.
If I could button mash a torch into my characters hand, it is quite ridiculous that I couldn't button mash it away…

Anyone could always try out a few mods instead of this and get more enjoyment. Like that Nehrim doesn't look too bad or try out the best mod I've found for The Witcher. It's called The Full Combat Rebalance. I was playing that before I got Ventica and was enjoying every minute of it. It truly makes the game better in every way possible. Not too difficult, but definatly more challenging and potions, oils and bombs are a definate MUST now. For example you have to use Specter Oil to damage wraiths or other specters. There are a ton of other improvements so just check out the readme for details on what it does (and it does A LOT).
If you get FCR then you'll have to get The Witcher Texturen Mod. It's your usual enhanced texture mod with a few more bloody details thrown in there
I would believe anyone would have a lot more fun with either of those than Two Worlds.
