Is there any real motivation to play them in single player though?

If I remember correctly these additions are not single maps but add ins into the base game so you have additional quests essentially.

But it has been a long time since I tested them, so I am not sure.

Interesting. If that's the case, I have to wonder why they didn't just implement both modes to begin with.

Not liking the game, I didn't play these addons. I re-read the PRs and they each mention multiplayer a million times but the FAQ does indeed say they can be played along — but you need to log into the MP server for access. It doesn't sound like an integrated part of the main game to me:

Tainted Blood FAQs

F: I can't find the Add-On.
A: The Add-On "Tainted Blood" is only available in the multiplayer part but can be played alone.

F: How do i start a map from the Add-On?
A: Login into one of the multiplayer servers, press F12, choose a map from the mission window which begins with [DC1] or [DC3], click on '*Create' and when the connection window appears press F12 again.
Now a map from the Add-On starts.

F: Can i play the Add-On offline too?
A: No

Oh, thanks for the explanation. I think I should have been looking there earlier.
