Lack of cliques at the Watch
December 15th, 2010, 12:46
I was thinking…
I've noticed that I'm not quite as universally despised around here, as I've been in most forums I've frequented.
I wonder why, and I tell myself it's because there are no "cliques" around here that I can detect. I might be wrong, but it's refreshing - really.
Even the most vile scum (j/k) around here tend to get second chances, because they're looked at by individuals - rather than groups of people sticking together in their dislike.
Not that I would hold any animosity towards me against the carriers - as I don't really have the most amiable posting style
But I would like to commend the members of the Watch for their ability to separate the person from the post (most of the time), and their way of not joining forces at every opportunity!

Well, basically… Everyone's put you on their ignore list and so that's why no one is attacking you
…
I agree, the people here are more 'mature', let's say than in other forums. It's a shame some people have left though. Even DamianMadhevan or something, with his long, annoying and unverified posts was still very polite. A few others were also nice to talk to.
And even dte, BN, txa, Zaleukos, pibbur and so on and so on, most of them are all polite individuals. Of course, I'm the only one who ever has the correct point of view and all the others are wrong, but that doesn't mean they should not be allowed to voice their very flawed opinions on politics and games

Not sure why you'd be despised. I've disagreed with you in the past, but don't see why you'd be despised.
In any case I think we tend to overlook the idiocy because we….or at least I….know that people are more than the sum of one opinion. Plus, opinions tend to get blown out of proportion on forums or at least I hope that most opinions in the P&R section are blown out of proportion
At the very least this place tends to be like this cat:

We don't mind a few rats bugging the hell out of us

I'm still just a rat in a cage.

I know
That's why I had to post that. Love that picture.
Wish my cat would get along with rats.
She's too spoiled though and would eat one in a millisecond because she was jealous.

I wasn't aware that some forums had "cliques". I guess I should get around more.

DArtagnan, I actually think you have mellowed a bit
Course, a part of my irritation with you is you are usually right

To the original point, if you consider the "regulars" of the forum, there's really too much diversity (of background, of attitude, of viewpoint, etc) to develop much of a hivemind. There are a few topics that can bring gang tackles (piracy, Oblivion sux) if someone comes down on the wrong side of the discussion, but overall there are too many "shifting alliances" to develop long term active cliques.
For example, it's reasonably common knowledge that Thrasher and I don't play very nice in the P&R forums, which over time could lead to the growth of "tribes". BUT, when it comes to games we have remarkably similar taste and a great deal of respect for each other's opinions. While individuals are sometimes able to compartmentalize like that, you just don't see cliques managing it very often.
Lastly, the owners of the board learned a lesson about letting closed groups develop with the NFG back at RPGDot. It was a wonderful "sub-community" and I was truly honored to be a part of it, but ultimately it hurt the overall quality of the forums. By choosing not to give cliques a "private home base" to gather in, the admins made it far less likely they'd develop at all.

Sorry. No pearls of wisdom in this oyster.
Dallas Cowboys: Can we be done with the offseason? / / Detroit Red Wings: At least we get a new coach

RPGwatch itself is a clique, we are the nerds playing D&D on the school bus.

Well, I may have played D&D on the bus, but I also like Oblivion. So you see - nothing is as simple as it seems, especially not here at the Watch with its complicated - or is that sophisticated? - borderline polite inhabitants. A villainous hive of eclecticism. And you're part of it all.
