some of my students are absolutely obsessed with the thing, moreso even than the DOTA clones, especially after the ALU was built with it.

I was pushing NWN2 to go lego after I started doing that with NWN but I got lost in the din and that's what interests me with it, though I've yet to start messing with it seriously. It seems a bit like roller coaster tycoon meets Wolfenstein to me at this point.

It's even huge, 1.5M people bought the game and it seems to be still a beta.

My son plays it all the time. not sure exactly what the deal is he builds stuff during the day then monsters come at night to try and destroy it or something. Would give it a closer look but i'm already way behind with my current games.

I downloaed minecraft when he gave it away for free on a weekend. Mind you it was Minecraft alpha…I believe they are in Beta now. The game was pretty fun and interesting. I ended up building a glass castle…5 stories high. If you go to youtube you can see some great creations. The monsters are there to try to hunt you down at night. I could see this turning into some great RPG if you added some stats to the character and built a few towns and quests.

What exactly IS minecraft? I looked at their site and on the wikipedia page about it and couldn't get a clear answer. Obviously you can build stuff in it out of blocks, but is that all it is?

Depends how you play, there is different mode including solo and multiplayer.

Overall, it's a true sandbox games with randomly generated worlds where you need to get resources to craft things that will help you get better at gaining resources and survive. And you can now make cakes!

The author also talked about adding an adventure mode with quests at some point.

It's not for everyone, but the game can be a lot of fun if you like crafting and gathering.

Minecraft is tons of fun. Basically you mine out square blocks to build things with. There are resources to help like wood, coal, iron, and diamonds. And you can make things like chests, picks, axes, and mine carts/tracks. There is also a form of circuitry called red stone wire that work with buttons/levels that you make to do all kinds of crazy stuff from opening doors to mini-computers that folks with too much free time and more brain power than me have made. In survival mode monsters spawn at night or in the dark so you have to be on your toes. You can put the game in peaceful without the monsters so you can just build and build. Check out all Youtube.com videos to see what others are doing. The game is in beta at this time, and I had to turn off the new lighting features to make it stable, but I have differently gotten my money’s worth from this game already, and so has my wife.

I like the game. Find it relaxing and fun to mess with. Usually play in peacefull mode but monsters on is fun and gives you more matts to use. The videos this guy posted are good and give a good idea of what the game is about.

It is great for kids. Helps them learn organization, planning, and lends to their creative side.

There are a few good mods that alter the look of the game from other players you can download too. Just have to go to the game site for links.

I'm having a good time w/ it, finally got it.

I like exploring the random worlds and creating a huge underground complex at the moment. I found a huge underground cavern practically lined w/ gold deposits and was all excited at first - to my chagrin there doesnt seem like there's much practical use for gold = \

It makes for pretty decorations but the practical use only comes in the fact that that is a good sign you may be near diamond deposits. That is hard to find. The dev takes the system offline now and then to tweak stuff. Nice thing is you can still play the offline and it saves what you have done so far.

Must… mine.. more….

Finally suffered my first fatality after many close calls. Seems like there's problems w/ some enemies attacking thru walls. I had some hilarious close calls w/ the explosive "Creepers", but my life was ultimately claimed by a zombie on the other side of a wall.

It's surprisingly tense at times when mining deep in the earth and i bust into a vast cavern. I see some iron deposits over there, and wow look at the river of lava! but what's that sound?
Suddenly im fighting for my life as enemies emerge from the shadows.

I had a forest fire I started by mistake while playing with the first lava I found. It must have burned 100s of trees, before I even realized it was burning, and it lasted the entire first month I was playing the game. BTW, lava can set things on fire even through walls it seems (at least trees anyway).

"Sparks" fly up to 3 blocks on all direction (unless it's 5 blocks) and set fire to anything that can burn (like wood).

I once used the lighter to set fire to one tree and saw the fire propagate to the forest…weeee!

Sunday evening hurt, and badly… I havent felt this way since the early MMO days, losing a bunch of loot on death. The girl left at noon, taking the dog w/ her. It was me and minecraft, a 6 pack and a couple tubes of pringles.

I set out early, armed w/ all the provisions that I'd need for a deep earth trip - meat, one square of wood, and all the tools and weapons that I'd need. I came upon weird things in the depths that day - strange spiders and zombies locked in cages, chests of loot left from…. who? Was someone else down here?

I cracked my knuckles, stretched my neck, and played on.

Many close calls & dings in my armor later, I was far beyond the pit of zombies and spider rooms coming upon ancient caverns which came alight w/ my torchlight, their glistening minerals beckoning to me. Rivers of water and lava cut thru the rock before my eyes. This is the magic of Minecraft.

The underground waterfalls and rivers were cool, but the lava that I came upon as I went deeper fulfilled my final objective of buckets of lava for later use in my castle above. Stopping for a little while, I set up a small camp and processed/sorted the goods I collected. I had spent the entire afternoon on my journey, and my bags were heavy w/ gems & iron bars. My food was gone. Objectives having all been met, I prepared to head back…

What is that I see down there? Iron ore? I have a little more room…

In roughly 5 seconds, my life (and more importantly, loot) lie beneath a pond of molten rock. One wrong block dug, one shaft without the proper escape preparations, and my entire afternoon sunk into the lava.

Epic fail. It hurt bad.

Not sure if you guys have seen this yet.. Apparantly there's a public advisory to change your password if you have an account at minecraft.net.

It recently came to our attention that a list of approximately 1,000 Minecraft account names and passwords were made freely available on the internet. We believe this list consists of information collected by a group of malicious users from a well known "griefing team". How the information in this list was obtained is not sure, but we suspect they collected them through the use of hacked clients (that pretend to only give you extra features like flying or seeing through blocks but actually send your account information to the creators as well) or websites made to look like the official Minecraft site.
