What is the answer? I fail at math, even basic shit.

48÷2(9+3) = ????

2 or 288?

288

Basic order of operations. Parentheses, then multiplication or division left to right. Kinda tricky with the implied multiplication, but still not much room for "interpretation".

Yes, without the brackets, 288 should be the correct answer, but you'll find some calculators get it wrong!!

According to order of operations it would be
48 / 2(12)
= 48/24
= 2

Hence the beauty of RPN caclulators:

48 2 9 3 + * / = 2
48 2 / 9 3 + * =288

No need for parantheses at all.

This is the way I read it:

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
24(12)
288

Inside the parenthese first, then order of operations from left to right

Who the hell uses that "÷" useless operator? I first thought it meant "+"

48÷2(9+3) = ????
Now if you write it in a sensible way then it is:

48/2*(9+3) = 48/2*12 = 24*12 = 288 <- That is the mathematically correct result.

On the other hand the bloke who wrote it could just have been lazy. If the equation had been written in a prober way everyone would know what it is supposed to be (and with proper way I mean as a fraction).

A number of calculators do, for instance the hp-48 emulator i use occasionally. But it is confusing, since it's also used in stead of "-" where I live.

Yes, you have it on calculators or in computer calculation programs as an icon. But you don't write it.

I guess you're right. Last time I saw it used this way (before this thread) was 12th of November 1973, so it's unusual, yes.

48/2*(12) = 288
48/(2*12)=2

edit: I suck at math too. I did learn one handy thing though. Remember the initialisation BODMAS

Brackets
Orders(square roots, etc)
Divisions, Multiplications
Additions,Subtractions.

Thats the order you work it out in.

I'm saying 2 because the multiplication operator was implied instead of written out, which makes me think the author has something like:

48
--------
2x

where x is 9+3. If the author then turns around and says I'm wrong, then I will repectfully point out that the equation isn't written very clearly and thus deserves to be misinterpreted. I'm not wrong, I'm delivering justice!

^This is the standard algebra interpretation. It would be surprising if some calculators get it wrong…
