Gameplay vs. Story

Assuming they're separate, which would you deem most important?
Personally, I favor gameplay.

I was kinda talking about games
Some games are mostly story (adventures) and some are mostly gameplay (Rogue-likes) - and I'm just wondering what people enjoy more.
A vague and open question - but that's how I like it.

It really depends on what I'm in the mood for, but I would prefer games for their gameplay than for their story. I do like having some coherent world built around me though, which is why I cannot play rogues or a game that's just a dungeon. That's just for RPGs though.
I don't mind RTS games with no story if I like the multiplayer. Like, I used to play AoEII custom maps with spawning units for hours
So, your question is too global

It depends…
For example in a point and click adventure, definitely, story is more important. In a space game like Elite, or any sandbox game, I'd say gameplay. In cRPG the two must be balanced.

Story first, gameplay second.

I'm with Jemy on this one, at lest for RPG's. It's probably because I suck at tactical combat anyway.

Depends on the game: For RPGs it's story for me. In FPS and RTS both are important and in 4X and Action-RPGs I don't give a damn about the story.

You really can't have one without the other and expect to have a good game. Having said that, I tend to favor gameplay.
I can tolerate a game with a poor story if the gameplay is good. It's much harder for me to stomach poor gameplay, regardless how good the story is.

Honestly by the time I get my 30th side quest in a row I've forgotten what the story was in the first place. with my work schedule I may go a couple weeks at a time without having time to game or only an hour here or there so I often lose track of the story that way also.
So gameplay has to be good.

It would be gameplay for me.
That's the main reason I'll play a game as opposed to reading a book or watching a movie. But like JDR13 said, to have a really good all around game you have to have both. But I played many a game with less than great stories because of addicting combat or interesting skill upgrades or even just the loot I'll hopefully find.

I only finish games with a good story.Gameplay is not enough to keep me playing a big game.

In general I want a good story as this will always keep me moving forwards. There is a but. But this usually means that I will only play once unless there are other factors.
The other factors include being able to tackle the problems from different perspectives in a meaningful way. For example different classes, at its simplest, warrior vs rogue vs mage. Or using a major skills to see what happens - try an intelligent warrior in NWN. I would include these in gameplay as they allow me to play the game in a different way hopefully seeing different outcomes even if I end up at the same point.
So I would vote for story but the gameplay makes me replay a game. [Actually mods make me replay games where they add to the basic story line but that's probably another thread.]
[Books and movies(including TV series) do it for me where they introduce "other worlds". ]

I'd say it depends on the game. I love so many genres… shooters, cRPGs, RTS, adventures, gardening simulations (
), tower defense, platformers, fighting games… you name it. But it's not genre alone, sometimes games of the same genre differ in so many aspects that I'd say it depends on the game in question. Especially with cRPGs, it depends even more. Each game has its unique push or pull on me.
If I absolutely have to decide on either gameplay or story, I guess I prefer gameplay over story; if a game has nice gameplay, interesting chars and a great atmosphere, I can still make up the background story myself. I mean, I once wrote 200+ pages based on one event in a match of Counterstrike

Gameplay. A good Story might entertain me once or maybe twice, but good gameplay may entertain me countless hours.
