Frozen Synapse Released
May 26th, 2011, 18:06
Frozen Synapse is a strange looking single or multi-player turn-based tactical game. I've heard some good things from RPS.
Here is the homepage and some previews:

You can grab it from the homepage or Steam for $19.99.
I would give this one a try if it weren't for the fact that I have too many games as it is and that it looks too odd to play without a demo. Although looks can be deceiving as I found out with roguelikes.

This game looks good. I'm still going to hold off on buying it for awhile. The singleplayer portion might better than I thought, but it still sounds like a game designed for multiplayer.

It had seemed doubtful, months back, that this would ever be a convincing single-player game. It seemed wholly designed for player-versus-player, and a Brink situation of strung-together bot matches seemed the most likely outcome. Frozen Synapse is an excellent and inventive multiplayer game, but it is, truly, also an excellent and inventive single-player game - one that provides its own distinct challenges and rewards even as it effectively tutors you to be a multiplayer champ.Reaction Time
But the dizzy thrill of defeating an implacable human opponent - after all that panicky guesstimation, all your courting of the mendacious spacebar - is the sweetest song the game has to sing. That's why your $20 or £15 buys two copies of Frozen Synapse, making an already fair price for a smart and slick game all the fairer.
Frozen Synapse takes the old, the stuffy and the traditionally glacial and it makes it brand new, instant and brutal. It's such an achievement.
Frozen Synapse is simple. Frozen Synapse is also complex. It’s simple in its user interface, in its ideas, and in its execution. But the gameplay, the thought you put behind each move, and the anticipation you put behind each phase as you try and work out what your opponent will do next and stay one step ahead? That’s the complex part, but in a good way. A fantastic way. As mentioned in an image caption above, this game has a singleplayer campaign, a multiplayer component packed with leaderboards, stat tracking, and week-long matches. Oh, that, and there’s also instant skirmishs you can create at the press of a button with infinite possibilities for new scenarios. You can even fine tune said skirmish generator to create match after match after match…and all for £18.99? Really, I can’t see many flaws with the game- and I don’t just throw a statement like that around. All I could say that is the tutorial could do a bit of a better job showing you what you can do with the facilities available, but it does show you everything so you’re not ill-equipped by the end.Middle East Gamers
Do yourself a favour and buy it, maybe even go halves with a friend of yours, or just be a saint and give a friend the free copy you receive. Even if you don’t play online, this game is still a blast. So much fun to be had, and a rewarding experience to be engrossed in. I can’t hammer that point enough. Rewarding, fun. Simple, complex. In the end? Fantastic.
The game may look a little daunting to casual players with its birds-eye view, complicated timers and waypoint / eye-sight lines on GUI, in the start but once you start playing it gets real easy to get sucked into it. The visuals of the game leave a lot to be demanded. The theme of graphics is Tron like “digital” world, but I think they could have done much better if there was more variety than an all blue design every time. The in-game context menu and Main menus in same way are rather dull and old style with lots of text. Those are my only complaints which bring the visual aspect down of the game.
