Alrik's Games Com 2011 Impressions
August 20th, 2011, 12:59
Hello, everyone,
I'm still a little bit exhausted, but my mind is clearer now. I'm trying to recollect what I've seen and played.
I'll be writing this as with the so-called "stream of consciousness" as the method : Hacking everything down into my keyboard as it reaches my consciousness (reaching out from my memory) …
But please don't excpect absolutely accurate reports - I just can't do that.
Los geht's :
- TDE Demonicon : There were only waves of undead ones to battle - each wave was more powerful than the first one. Unfortunately I didn't look at the "life-meter" ( = health bar) all of the time, so my character was dead at one point.
- On another screen there I watched someone who got further on and he was inside of the "Unholy Temple" or what it was - battling more powerful foes."
- The "death screen" after the character has died says "may Thargunitoth spare your soul" … Which could - imho - be interpreted that the "hero" already has a pact with this demon …
- The Mass Effect queues were too ong. I didn't bother.
- Same for SW:TOR - which was actually one of the longest lines I have EVER seen on a games fair
- Same for Skyrim - except the very last line yesterday. Closed before my nose.
- Mass Effect area itself was surprisingly small
- SIMs new expansion : Animals. Can be created just like humans, in principle
- Mass Effect new thing : They gave away orange blow-up kind of "hand-blades" … I only know the ME2 demo so far, and this thing looks like the "universal tool" or how this thing attached to one's arm or glove is called, only that this new "tool blade" appears to me to be some sort of extension of that tool … Impression is that of a weapon for close combat.
- Playing "Rayman : Origins" was HUGE fun !!! Especially with 4 people !!!

- "Rayman : Origins" is like … a slightly expanded version of the original Rayman game, but for consoles this time.
- HOMM 6 looks as if the developers have been playing King's Bounty too long - or very thorough. I mean that the look of the game looks very much into the direction of King's Bounty, actually. The actual battle grit looks almost like a copy.
Which isn't bad for me.
- The newest Anno game has 3 factions : Greenies, Techies and "Economies", as I call them.
- MASSIVE advertisement for the MOO "World OF Tanks" MASSIVE advertisement !
- Including complaints reported by the newspaper for "glorification of war". In Cologne, the war is still fresh in the memories of the people (almost like in Berlin, which was much, much more war-torn), so people re VERY sensitive over signs that someone wants to make peple believe war would be a "fun thing" … The complaints were especially against advertisement posters, and cable cars being covered with HUGE advertisement "poters" as well.
- Again, MASSIVE advertisement within the Games Com for that game. You get the idea ?
- They gave away game CDs/DVDs with promo codes (I have 3 of them, taken from the floor, if one is interested)
- They also gave away tiny tanks (really tiny !) with promo codes as well
- The Settlers Online looks cute. Very cute
- Age Of Empires Online also looks *very* cute !
- DDO was presented as well - by Warner … how are they calling themselves nowadays ? The strategy game of "Z" was published by "Warner Interactive" in the 90s … I don't know how they are calling themselves nowadays, but the logo is exactly that of "Warner Bros."
- The booth of Risen 2 looked like a tiny beach - complte with palm trees and sand (and with artificial rocks) - queue was too long for my taste
- Deep Silver publishes Deus Ex 3 here in Germany - an Risen 2 as well, if I understood it correctly
- Big Ben Interactive published games in the 90s … but nowadays they almost only do gaming hardware
- with a few exceptions, of which the "Ceatures 4" is an example. The "Creatures" were like "digital pets", whih you can grow, and they are otherwise AI-controlled, apart from their teaching you, the player do to them - that was a great thing when they came out first.
- got 2 Creatures figurines
- An Employee told me they didn't know about SW:TOR figures being made - and he said, if they did knew it, they would have announced it already
- Danger Joe looked sort of cute and interesting as well … Console only, unfortunately
- Dragon's Dogma is only for consoles as well, if I remember correctly
- didn't bother about shooter games in general - partly, because they had long queues as well
- at the HUGE both of Blizzard, there was once a performence of parts of the soundtrack - by a real orchestra ! - It consisted only of a few people, though. But they were wearing clothes like you'd expect from going to any Symphony Concert …
- Played Stronghold 3. Fun. Reminded me much of Stronghold 1, but that's too long ago already. The map contained several greenish looking clouds - which were toxic, because every woodcutter who walked through them died. Had to remove the wood cutting building after I had realized that. Wolves and bears can be a threat, too. Can be "battled" by the "chief" of the village - who looks like a king or at least a mighty knight within complete, silver-looking armor
- didn't play Warhammer, but it looked good. Don't know too much about that universe, however.
- the Q in the THQ ogo looks like an S cut in half (and the upper half is used)
- There's a new game out there about Sonic The Hedgehog . It's called "Sonic : Generations" and both 2D and 3D "forms" of Sonic can be played. Console only. Sad.
- Played Haunted a tiny bit. Good riddles : Couldn't solve them. All I could do was "use" Oscar, the ghost (one of several ghosts) to open an hot oven, because every ghost has special "abilities", and Oscar can do : Hot, Cold, electricity - related things. *And* he insists on ONLY doing that !
- The Star Wars Kinect game looks awesome ! It really looks as realistic like I've never seen a game before ! It's as if you would be on a planet for yourself, a young Padawan. This is finally one game that looks shooter-game - like realistic look but NOT for a shooter game ! (How comes that the ONLY realistic looking games are shooter games ???)
- For those who like turn-based games and space exploration : "Legend Of Pegasus" looks promising. By Kalypso.
- Also by them : Porte Royale 3 … and a few other imilar games, which names I've just forgotten.
Awesomenauts by dtp looks like fun ! It looks like a colourful, traditional jump & run game - only that it is MMO and you'll have to battle your enemies with special weapons !
- in general, there's a HUGE trend towards 2D - but ONLY for online games !
- Or for consoles ! (This is coming, too !)
- some online games look actually very funny - and many console games, too !
- which leaves in me the impression that :
- grim-looking game => it's for the PC
- fun-looking game => it's either for a console or an online game
Weird …
On special advertisements, codes etc. :
- I have 3 strange little things here. They looks as if they had been attached to something related to "Battlefield 3", I think by EA.
Therese 3 tiny sheets of paper have codes printed on, translation by me : "The download code is only valid for preorders of "Battlefield 3 limited edition" in the German Origin Store. […] Internet connection and EA accound (14 years and up) are necessary. Valid until August, 31st, 2011"
If anyone is interested in this, contact me. It appears to be for Germany only.
- Another code sheet I found lying on the floor is Mass Effect 3 related : Text says (it's in English) : "Redeem this code to ownload your xbox live avatar's very own Alliance Normandy SR2-2" and "Alliance Normandy SR2-2 xbox 360 avatar prop".
If anyone is interested, contact me, but I have inly THIS ONE sheet !
It appears tio be for the xbox only, as it seems to me.
- I have one information sheet saying that there's a new LC for Brink : It's called "Agents Of Chance"
- Another information sheet tells me about a new handball game by dtp
- Another sheet tells me about a promotion of Gamestop : www.gamestop.de/gamescom
There's also a competition/raffle (what's the best word for that ?) there.
Please keep in mind that this might be only avalable for German inhabitants.
- By the way - the web site of EA also has a competition/raffle/or what's the word on their Games Com sub site.
- There's a Gamesload rebate code for Tropico 4 (Gamesload is a german commercial download site, daughter company of the "Deutsche Telekom") : Tropico4forDL8GL
I have several sheets with all of them having the same code, so I guess it's fairly save to post them here …
- One sheet says that there is another competition - this time for "Jagged Alliance - Back In Action" … The competition is simple : It is so that they want people to register on "facebook.jaggedalliance.com", pressing the LIKE key err button … - and that's it ! Winnable are T-Shirts and 3 packs consisting of a T-Shirt, a gaming mouse and a gaming keyboard (all by Logitech, G110/g500, respectively. Haven't heard from them yet.)
Well, I think that's it for now. Maybe I can remember more details later.
Two oddities, both from the Ubisoft booth :
- One employee actually had rubber ear plugs ! That was wise ! Because the loudness in the halls was often too much to bear …
- Another one actually RECOGNIZED my "Simon The Sorcerer" T-Shirt !!! Yay !
He said : "Well, this is VERY Retro !"
Last Oddity : The "NO COPY - PRO ORIGINAL" campaign of the trade fair … look here (the PDF file there is English/German) : http://www.interzum.de/aussteller/nocopy.php
So far.
Until later.

Yes, Of course !
But - there were also big crowds there !
Besides, Valve was also there, but they were solely promoting something called .A (or, in other words, "DotA").
Don't know what this is.

The GamesCom was closed for today a couple of hours ago. Security concerns. The halls were full and thousands of people wanted in. Only people who had already purchased a ticket before the show were still let in … slowly. Everybody else was aked to delay their visit until Sunday.
The German authorities have become very strict after the Love Parade disaster last year. It totally sucks. People here aren't willing to accept that accidents can happen.

I feared that this would happen.
It was already so full on Thursday.

Yes, I was quite surprised myself.
Regarding the public reactions, this game has potential.
Doesn't say anything on its quality, though … And I just can't comment on it, simply because I have never played it … I just wish they'd do an SP-offline game out of it as well …

DOTA2 is the sequel to Defense of the Ancients, which was a mod for Warcraft III. It's basically going to be an online only multiplayer fantasty themed strategy game with RPG elements.
Thanks for the report. Good to know on some of the stuff like Stronghold 3 since I already have that one on pre-order from Steam. I went with the 20% off code from Green Man Gaming so I got a bit of deal on it, but you never know what you are going to get when you pre-order so it's good to hear from someone who played it.
Sims 3 I think is probably nearing the end of its lifespan. They always save the animals pack as their last ditch effort to revitalize the game before it runs out of steam. Of course it won't be the end of Sims since there will surely be a Sims 4, and the Facebook Sims, and the cell phone and tablet Sims, and many, many more DLC.

Okay, I'm not so much into SIMs … always wanted to buy one of these games, but the fact that the additional material is scattered around 10.000 packs drives me off. I REALLY one ONE thing in ONE package containing EVERYTHING.
I really don't want to have to look around for even the most obscure add-on package … That's what I don't like about Add-Ons in the first place.
And DLCs, especially.
I'll be posting a few more bits today, since I've found a few more imho interesting things in a few magazines and pamphlets. Especially in the UK magazine called "develop", which I always try to take from the Games Com
(and there's a special place I know of where is magazine is located for the public to grab it
).
For example, I just read today the WHOLE gaming history connected to Mr. Ian Livingstone in that magazine - and I was impressed !
He had received a "lifetime award" from this magazine.

Alrik can you please do me a favor and visit The West (online browser RPG) block and check what is it about? I'm (well, still I guess) fan of that game and can't be there myself. And they're keeping details on the next update a secret.
On the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/TheWestGame they say this:
"if you just want to say "Hi", come to: Browser games park: Hall 9.1, booth B310. If you tell the friendly people there the secret phrase "Bananencolt", you will get some free goodies!"
I guess you can get a banana there, too, hehe

Sorry, but I didn't go to the "West Com" ?
on Saturday and on Sunday, I'm afraid …
Regarding Adventures : Take a look at Haunted by Deck 13, I've played the demo (it's downloadable), and I like it.
Rumors say there's already a patch out for it.
Apart from that, I have only seen a new Sherlock Holmes adventure game, and Memonto Mori 2, both at dtp … And … Well, I remember having briefly seen another Secret Files game (German : Geheimakte Tunguska), it's the third game in this series. IT was shown at the booth of Deep Silver.
Warner alsop shown a new Batman game - and an MP or MMO game called "Superhero Imposters - Heroes like you and me" I think was its title. There are two factions : One around Joker, one around Batman, and they all look like orinary people dressed in superhoero costumes !
I found this idead simply GREAT, it's so much different than the usual hero mumbo jumbo, but unfortunately it is online only … But could be huge fun !
Edit : Wrong game title, it's actually "Gotham City Impostors" : http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/acti…ors/index.html
Second Edit : Hm, well, strange, the art direction looked much more different than what I just saw on that Gamespot page … Strange …
Third Edit : There's also an "Goldeneye" game for the 007 console out there …
But I didn't look out too much for console-only and for online-only games … I rather tended to ignore them …
There was at one place advertisement for a LOTR : "The War In The North" game … I guess it's an addition to the MMORPG, no ?
Fourth Edit : You seemingly can play Catwoman, too.
