Franchises with potential
December 12th, 2011, 13:32
Ok, bored at work - so let's have a little list-game.
What franchises do you think have the most potential - that have either been abandoned, ruined or just never made. Name three (if you can) that you'd like to see done right as a movie or a series of movies. Could be live-action, cartoon, or CGI. Whatever.
Mine:
1. Alien
2. Star Wars
3. System Shock
Easy choices, I know - but I still consider them all shock-full of movie potential. Alien was ruined by Alien 3 and 4. They should have made the third one with that one script with the monks on a wooden planet. 4 is just a travesty.
Star Wars? The prequels and partially RotJ should have never happened, but the setting is so strong - as KotOR 1+2 have shown. Just execute Lucas and make something worthwhile.
System Shock? Yeah, it's a game. But it would make for one tense sci-fi film
I don't really care if they're done as live-action, though that would probably be my preference for all of them.

Star Wars - because there's no adventure game there yet.
Indy Jones - because thre is no new adventure game there, too. Only those boring action-adventures.
Age Of Wonders - because the series imho still has potential (sooo many stories to tell !!!) and could need an upgrade.
TDE - because - well, they're doing several new games for that right now. You just don't have any idea how rich this world is ! - Fault of the license holder(s), who just don't relese all of the pen & paper stuff for the international market …
Shadowrun - because they just failed in doing any recent games.

I dislike the very idea of 'franchise'. A preplanned set of connected works (trilogy, tetralogy, n…logy) yes, but a franchise rarely has potential past the first episode as far as I'm concerned. Even if it maintains a decent quality for some time, it will inevitably get trapped within the world it created for itself and it will start cannibalizing itself.

Well, you can use whatever word you wish. Franchise is just the best one I can think of.
But we agree that commercialism is ruining art.

Aliens and Predator both have lots of potential, but we've seen what happens when someone tries to do anything with those franchises. If a really powerful director with a real love of the originals came along and was able to ignore the marketing idiots, then we might see something good.
Star Wars has been defiled too badly too many times and should just be left to die. The original movies and a handful of games can't compete with the endless amount of crap that's flooded the market and increasingly becoming part of the modern fandom. Any attempt to please the original fans will piss off the new ones who grew up with the EU and new trology, and anything else will just drive the original fans further away. Not that Lucas cares about either group.
As silly as it sounds, I think He-Man could do quite well. Obviously there's no way you could do anything remotely serious with it (seriously, just consider the main character's name), but it could bring back the sci-fantasy genre if done right.
The Shadow could use more love. The Alec Baldwin movie is cheesy goodness, but the proto-superhero deserves better.
I could probably come up with a million more if I thought about it for a few minutes.

I didn't suggest that the word wasn't proper… I mentioned preplanned trilogies as being a different concept -not word- that I prefer. (Because they are 'preplanned' - you know they're going somewhere)

It's not like I really believe that we'll see good examples of movies made in these franchises - but one can still talk about them.
Just for fun, you know

Stargaze sg1 has been ruined. They should never have brought in the ori. That was just like : oh look, we need a new enemy, let's create an indestructible force.
Stargaze Atlantis too. And universe. Blah!
I would have like to learn more and see more of the past encounters too.
I think the tv show Jericho had a lot of potential, shame it got cancelled.
I loved gothic but they did have lots of game breaking bugs. They should do a remake of gothic on the risen engine minis the bugs and with all the quests completed, like that first mine. I would also have rather seen a less linear game after chapter 1. I've played chapter one more than ten times but I only finished the game twice, since it's the same every time anyway…

That said, I'll stick with my choices (to make movies out of them - see "Star Wars Detours" for what i mean) and add The Longest Journey to my personal list.

Dragonlance could be made into a great trilogy. They made an animated one of the first book, but it was awful. And by awful I mean I wanted to cry by the end.
Honestly, the entire Forgotten Realms has potential, either as movies or TV. Unfortunately, we've only ever gotten grade B (at best) efforts.
A good Sci-Fi series I think could be made of Frederik Pohl's HeeChee Saga. It blends a lot of good sci-fi elements in space travel, alien races and virtual reality.

Things I'd like to see…
Dune - Not more books or shitty 'made for tv' movies though. A hardcore AAA crpg could be fantastic if made by the right people.
Might & Magic - I'd love to see this series started again. Something that has the complexity of the older titles, with modern visuals and mechanics.
Vampire: The Masquerade - We need another game like Bloodlines, and a movie could be great if it stayed true to the source material and had the right director.

LEM's Imager series would make incredible movies, but I doubt it will ever happen.

I'd like to see the Bone movie which was worked upon for a time to really happen one day. As an traditionally animated movie, no CGI, please.

I'd like to see a VTMB movie but with the same gothic/horror feeling.
edit: Also, for the OP: There's a new Alien movie coming out in 2-3 years I think. It will probably suck though. It's really a shame since Alien is one of my fav. movies ever.
