Franchises with potential

I'd like to see a VTMB movie but with the same gothic/horror feeling.
edit: Also, for the OP: There's a new Alien movie coming out in 2-3 years I think. It will probably suck though. It's really a shame since Alien is one of my fav. movies ever.
Seeing as how it's from Ridley Scott - I consider it a must-see based on him doing the first movie.
But he's gotten increasingly bland the past few years, so I'm not expecting miracles.

Star Wars? The prequels and partially RotJ should have never happened, but the setting is so strong - as KotOR 1+2 have shown. Just execute Lucas and make something worthwhile.
System Shock? Yeah, it's a game. But it would make for one tense sci-fi film
I don't really care if they're done as live-action, though that would probably be my preference for all of them.
Kill Lucas, preferably with some merchandize that was his goal to deliver with the three last movies (he had left all ambitions of being a movie maker, just a peddler)
System Shock 2, is a MOMENT for me. It would, in the right hands have all the possibilities of a great cineastic moment.
4. Deus Ex, yes, im a fan of sci fi, I would love to see more games in that universe and why not a movie as well. Good story.
Now to pure gaming franchises that were raped beyond the edges of the galaxy.
Master Of Orion
I curse you, Quicksilver, I curse you and hope you all develop itchy and disfiguring skin diseases.

Have to go and calm down, MOO3 still hurts

@DArtagnan: Yes I am talking about that one and imo it will suck if it can't be compared with at least the second movie (after that the franchise died though Alien 4 was… acceptable). Also don't forget that Prometheus will not have Sigourney Weaver in it and that's a major letdown.

Well, I consider Aliens the best sci-fi movie in the world - and one of the best movies overall.
If Prometheus comes even close to that, I'll start saying positive things about EA. Because then anything can happen.

Prometheus is connected to Alien? I've heard the name a few times, but I had no idea it was a prequel to Alien.

There was a trailer leaked online a while back, but I couldn't find any links that were still up.
Found a cool poster though…

Ok… I'm officially interested.

Aliens is great, but doesn't the first move have more suspense and creepiness?

First time I've heard about Prometheus. The image of the dead alien from the first movie had me excited until you guys said the movie is no longer a prequel ;(

About Prometheus
It's not a DIRECT prequel - but it's going to be set in the same universe - and AFAIK, it's going to deal with the Space Jockey race in some fashion.
If I understand Ridley correctly, he didn't go away from "official prequel" because he didn't want to do an Alien film - but because he wanted more freedom to explore a new take on the setting. I think it has to do with his creative approach.
I could be wrong, though, but that's my understanding.

As for Alien vs Aliens - I think they're both fantastic films. But I prefer Aliens, because it's the only film in the known universe that combines the following:
Sci-fi
Strong Horror/tension (maybe not a pure horror film, but it's certainly terrifying at times)
Intense heartpounding action
Plausible plot
Plausible characters
Sequel doing something completely different
Strong acting
100% respect for canon
Fantastic dialogue (for its time)
Fantastic visual effects (for its time)
Great music
Satisfying ending
Great villain that you don't see coming for a while
And more…
Alien is also fantastic, but I don't have nearly as much respect for what it takes to pull off a claustrophobic monster movie. The characters are ok, but they're underwritting and underdeveloped. The dialogue is neutral and the plot is more mystery than anything else. Essentially, it's an extremely simplistic premise done to near perfection. Ridley is a master of the unique visual aesthetic - and the movie has unmatched pacing. But the Alien creature is ultimately what makes the movie work - and that's Giger's work primarily.
As a piece of work, I just happen to respect Cameron's more - especially since he wrote it himself - and had a very direct role in pretty much all parts of the production. I consider it the peak of his craft - and I'm not surprised most of what he's done since then is crap in comparison. I think he spent most of his talent on this and Terminator.

Don't forget that the first movie had the scene with Ripley in panties

Certainly the 2nd movie had a lot more testosterone fueled action, but I found the space marine characters rather cliche.
December 14th, 2011, 22:55
I'm referring to lasting value, not value at the time of release. I mean pong was great at release, but now, would anybody think so?
December 14th, 2011, 23:04
That's stupid Thrasher. You're talking about the concept of cliché. By changing it to be about lasting value - you're saying that everything in the world is cliché because it will eventually be.
Essentially, you're saying that everything that has become cliché has lost its value, meaning Alien is hardly anymore "impressive" than Aliens.
That's weak

Shadowrun is screaming awesome MMORPG or SP CRPG waiting to be made. However the dev peeps who got that rights are making a F2P browser based MP game out of it. ugh… I really think Obsidian should have gone after the rights to SR. I think they could have done the setting justice and done a wonderful job with it. Prob a CRPG GotY contender.
