Direct 2 Drive going away - kinda.
December 22nd, 2011, 03:33
I got a disturbing email today, basically saying that Direct2Drive is being absorbed by Gamefly. A paid service.
I have like 50 games on Direct 2 Drive, so I'm not liking this development. I dont care how they pad it and reassure me, I'm going to be downloading all my stuff asap.

What do you need to do now?
Right now, it's business as usual; you can continue to pre-order and buy games just like you do today. We'll keep you informed and send you more details when everything is ready to go. In the meantime, your Direct2Drive account will work as it does now, and we will fully support new releases as usual.
At the beginning of next year, we'll migrate all Direct2Drive services to GameFly. We'll take care of everything for you - transferring your account and purchase history to GameFly so you can pick up right where you left off (you'll just need to reset your password for security). If you already have a GameFly account, we'll combine the two.
Important Information There are a couple things you can do now to ensure a smooth transition:
1. Download your favorite game purchases from Direct2Drive. We plan to have as many game files as possible available on GameFly. Just to be sure, please download your old game files before the transition.
2. Download all of your non-game files (like Prima Guides). These will not be available on GameFly after the transition.
Once transferred, you'll be able to access your account with one login across GameFly's entire suite of integrated services: The GameFly Client, Web site, and Mobile App.
Check out the GameFly Client!
The GameFly Client was built just for GameFly's new PC & Mac gamers. The Client lets you pre-order, buy, and download PC & Mac games, read news, check out HD videos and screenshots, organize your game collections, and more.

I have the FEAR bundle from these guys. Guess I better grab and archive it. I never really liked the cheap quality feel of Direct2drive so this doesn't surprise me really. I did like the fact that it wasn't obtrusive like Steam though…

I have a LOT of games on D2D … time to duplicate what I can on Steam and GamersGate during the sale … though I somehow doubt the Mac version of Jade Empire is going on sale elsewhere soon …

crap. this is not good. I have a TON of huge games there, like assassins creed, fallout3 goty, etc etc. Plus, the question remains - since these games arent DRM free, what kind of activation do they need? Even if you DL them now, in a year will D2D's old authentication server still work? Will I have to get a paid subscription to download/activate my games?
I dont need this shit, last time I buy anywhere but Steam and GOG from now on.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually got the mail but didn't bother reading. I *think* I got Precursors from them or perhaps it was Gamersgate? Steam and GOG is where I prefer to go for my digital fix.

To be honest, I was never impressed with D2D anyways. In fact, I don't think I even purchased a single title from them, and I definitely won't be doing so now.

This has ALWAYS been my concern about digital distribution. Especially with outfits that require them to stick around by providing authentication services to play their games. Luckily, D2D isn't in THAT category (unlike Steam).

i hope not, the few titles that I've installed from them it just seems that I have to get a code from them if I remember correctly

GamersGate let's you download the whole game. It has a seriel code that you can write down.
I'll be using GG more often now. I still don't mind Steam for the sales, but for forty dollar purchases I'll either use the good ol' brick and mortar, GamersGate or better yet, GoG.

If I lose access to games I paid for, I'll just torrent them instead.

Well, I somehow managed to register twice at D2D but I never actually bought anything from them so I'm not to worried about this.

Isnt GG just as risky being a smaller entity, ready to be bought and sold to the first bidder w/ a fat wallet? I feel more comfortable w/ steam because they are the big guy, someone is less likely to take them over and change things up.

If EA ever gets their grubby hands on Steam, I'm quitting the internets. Like, forever. Big monster companies gobbling up their better, smaller competition….it almost sounds like a real-world rpg!!
