Looking for older games with good quests/missions
August 24th, 2012, 03:51
I am looking for some games that have pretty good quests, something like whats in Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, etc. Most of these are not going to be as good I know, just looking for ones that have some similarities in quest design and multiple resolutions.
Anyone can recommend more games like that besides from what I've played: (KOTORs, Baldur's Gates, Deus Exs, NWN mods, Albion, Hard to be a god, Jade Empire, Ultima 7, Arx Fatalis, Divine Divinity, Alpha Protocol, Gold Box games, Buck Rodgers,
And of these games how are the quests, mission, interesting, multiple resolutions?:
Betrayal at krondor
Shadowrun nintendo edition
Sentinel worlds future magic
Hard nova
Planet's edge
Dark sun wake of the ravager
Worlds of ultima martian dreams
Space rangers 2
Defender of Boston
Megatraveller 1 & 2
Circuit's edge
Thunderscape
Windwalker - A Tale From Moebius
Darklands
B.A.T.
Ultima Underworld
Expedition Amazon
Quest for glory
Rifts promise of power
The magic candle
Prince of Quinn
Centauri alliance
Another War
Border zone
Thoughts?

To sum it up, I feel our space program ended up like this. "It's one small step for man. One giant leap for man kind. Oops I fell on my butt after that leap and can't get up anymore."

What I haven't played yet is Kult The Heretic Kingdom.
Return To Krondor isn't bad, either, despite its - imho - horribly dated graphics …
Edit : And of cource the Realms Of Arcania series … Within its given plot you have a lot of freedom …

Space rangers 2 have lot of very different quest types.Text adventures(with huge variety),RTS land battles, classic bounty hunting, large scale system invasions and defense and more

I'd recommend both Darksun games. IMHO they are closer to Baldurs Gate than to the Gold Box games in structure.

Black Isle did a revolution with Baldur's Gate 1998. Have you worked yourself through Black Isle, Troika, Obsidian and Bioware you have done a good job at getting through the best there is, so do not expect anything I say as equally good. You may even wish to check out some of the "lesser" games such as Lionheart.
That said, the first game I could think of was Dungeon Siege II. Not one. It borrows a lot from Baldur's Gate with actual companions, dialogue and sidequests. Not as sophisticated as Black Isle but in that direction.

Windwalker - A Tale From Moebius
It was a very good game for its time, but it can't really compete with modern rpg complexities (such as multiple endings).

Kult The Heretic Kingdom, I always thought this was just a hack and slash dungeon romp, not sure about that?
Space Rangers 2, I started to mess around with this game a few years ago, didn't get into it then, I need to boot this bastich up again.
I played through all the Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Fallout 1&2, Temple of Elemental Evil and Arcanum, which are most of my favorite games ever. Thats the structure I am looking for.
I started Dark Sun 1, not to long ago, didn't know if it has good quests and a reasonable story. Appears I need to play this one to.
Played Wasteland, played NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer, boh are some of my favorites.
WIndwalker looks really interesting, mostly because the cool exotic setting and feel it oozes with.
Also for Wasteland fans, I just read reviews on Tunnels and Trolls and Dragon Wars.
Tunnels and Trolls is like a predecessor to Wasteland, with skill based task resolution everywhere. And Dragon Wars seems to have great quests with multiple solutions, skill based task resolution, and a good story!

From what I remember Tunnels and Trolls was made by some of the same crew as Wasteland, and was an inspirational predecessor to it. And it was base don the Pen and Paper RPG. Here is a Youtube link to a good Live play, my link is for an episode in the middle of their playthrough, but you can find the previous episodes pretty easily:

Dragon Wars was also made by Interplay I think, and it was a kind of follow up to the Bard's Tale. and further expands on concepts explored in Wasteland.

Thank you. I knew Tunnels & Trolls so far *only* as an Pen & Paper system, and I have rarely seen it in shops or on conventions here.
So, everything you wrote is new to me.

I have only watched the live play of Tunnels and Trolls, but from what I saw and read, both Tunnels and Trolls and Dragon Wars are good complements to fans of Wasteland's gameplay.

Tunnels and Trolls: tons of stat checks (though it doesn't have a skill system), plenty of CYOA-style situations where you have to decide how to behave and some really great ideas (e.g. languages you need to learn to communicate with some NPCs). Definately worth playing.
Dragon Wars: one of the best - and criminally overlooked - oldschool RPGs I've ever played. Usually billed as "yet another Bard's Tale clone", it's *FAR* better than any BT, has an extensive skill system and yes, most tasks can be solved in multiple ways. Actually, that's not the only innovative feature: your actions and choices *do* make a difference as well, sometimes with actual effects on the gameworld (probably the very first time somthing like this has been done in an RPG) - for instance, cities may get destroyed (!) depending on your choices. Also, it has an interesting, non-standard fantasy gameworld (no, the story isn't that great, by the way, just your usual "ancient evulz has arisen, go kill big baddie")
