Dark Souls PC Version
September 13th, 2012, 06:33
Well I took the advice from some members here that perhaps I was overlooking a great game in Dark Souls PC version so I bought it today. The game seems ok but I think I just suck at boss battles. I can't even put a dent in the first boss monster. I've figured out that I need to stay behind him. But I struggle so much using a controller I'm just not good at using joysticks for movement and camera placement.
The best round I had with the first boss I managed to stay alive for over 5 full minutes but in all that time I only knocked out like 1/100th of his hitpoints. I don't think I will at all be successful with this game given this abysmal start.

You're not supposed to beat the Asylum Demon the first time you encounter him.

Spoiler – .

I've beaten him. Don't try to run away. Circle around him, beat him all the time. Heal, then beat him again.

1) you can run away to the left of the chamber and escape through a door to get better weapons/armour and Estus Flusk for HP and get back on top of his head (literally).
2) you can beat him the first time depending on your character and gifts: you can get the black bomb as a gift from character creation and burn him to hell, or pyro for example. If you beat him the first time (i.e. first time you 'see' it) you will be in for a 'BIIIIG' surprise!

I had the same problem as the op, but I realized their must have been a "catch" (as in an escape route). I found it, but I haven't played the game much pas that point (I'm playing 3 games atm).
Although, the boss probably isn't that hard to kill once you get his attack pattern, just circle around him and dodge out when he attack. It will just take a LONG time without a proper weapon (I made a Wandered that start with a broken sword that does 2-4 point of damage per strike…)

Ok, here's the trick for beating the Asylum Demon for the first time without even getting the first weapon:
Also, don't worry about using controller, it's just a matter of practice
I hope you don't give up in the exploration of Lordran

Part of the problem is that I have pingeon-holed this game as a type of game it isn't. My impression was that this game is pure action and combat but that isn't the case. It does require a bit of exploration and the environments change (such as when the boulder comes down the stairs and breaks a hole in the wall).
I have now put on my Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 hats and have changed my playstyle from just beating things up to beating things up + exploring carefully. Looks like there is quite a bit to explore in the asylum area before taking on the boss. But dammit @SpoonFull for saying there is a BIG surprise for beating the boss the first time. Grr….

This is getting closer and closer to a buy…. i don't really want a controller…. but I suppose it'd be smartest to buy a xbox controller if I do get one for this game?

(Tangentially) speaking of exploring carefully, a lot of game´s lore is "hidden" in item descriptions.

Indeed, the mouse fix is good. Now, I just have to remember all the PC controls and what they do.
If you use a keyboard you might want to learn the xbox360 -> keyboard translation, because they forgot to change the "tutorial". The webpage here show the controls for the controller and keyboard.

Well I've had 5 separate gaming sessions with Dark Souls, each about 45 minutes in length and I officially declare I am too lame for this kind of game. The closest I've come to killing the very first boss is I've had him down to about 4 bars of health.
Since this is just the first Boss, it is doubtful I will make any meaningful progress in this game. So it's back to Skyrim for me. I'm just too lame with a game controller and I guess my reflexes are pretty bad too.

It is really a superior game in every respect.

Last night I couldn't sleep so I decided to try Dark Souls again. Finally I beat the first boss. I've never been so angry in a game since SNK's Magicial Lord (which used to really piss me off it was so hard).
