Default Vanguard - Review @ MPOGD

May 22nd, 2007, 20:16
Multiplayer Online Games Directory offers a "diplomatic review " of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.
It is a fine balance. The developers have already said that they had a choice when they made the game. Paraphrased, the choice was to either plan the game around today's capabilities and in two years it would need improved heavily to keep up with the newer technology, or plan two years ahead and build it for then so that the game would have a great deal of longevity. This trade-off has its prices though, and stability on machines of today is one of them. As time goes by though, players will start to have better machines, but will Vanguard have been forgotten by then because so few could play it back when it came out?
More information.

What exactely does diplomatic review mean? It's actually one of the better reviews out there that does the game justice.

Default Dieing promices

May 22nd, 2007, 21:34
The review is focused on potentially good features of the game, and they are there. However, as of now, hardly any feature works properly in the game - even the very basic ones. The diplomacy and crafting systems, though full of promice, are half-baked and consist only of short nice patches {covered with quest and meaning) separated by seas of mindless grind. 3 months after release did not bring any considerable improvement and player database is shrinking. Last Saturday night there were 5 players in New Targonor (eerie view of empty huge stone city, looks like a cemetary) and 3 players in Dwarve's capital. The interviews posted on RPGWatch with SOE and Sigil representatives give a pretty grim picture of the disaster coming out from what would be a very promising concept. Time will tell if Sony can salvage anything out of this unfunctional (as of now) monster.
Btw, we need games which run today on today's computers. Tomorrow will be other games for tomorrow's comps.

Well, I'd think that Vanguard never had a real chance. The press simply did not like the game. It basically got one bad score after the other, and not because it was a bad game, but it was not like WoW.
Vanguard was criticised for things that other games were praised for. It's true the system requirements are high, but have you ever seen a single player game getting a bad score because it has high system requirements if it delivers awsome graphics in return? I haven't…
